A British discursive view of the intervention
This is not the most academic or detailed of the tomes on the Siberian intervention or the Russian Civil War.
However it is generally a relaibale and well researched piece. its strength is the depth and variety of first-hand sources dobson has been able to bring to the attention of readers. These include the pilots of the title, and Colonel Johnson. On the other hand, they do not make as much use of particularly American, Russian and Czech sources as they could.
The academic reader would welcome footnoting etc. This does not have that, but what it does have iss a readable summary, primarily from a British point of view, of why the Allies were involved on a number of fronts in Russia's outlying provinces in 1918-20.
Equivalent volumes by Swettenham and Silverlight are available and offer almost the same information. A researcher will probably find only the above mentioned sources make this worth looking at. Otherwise for the general reader these three are broadly interchangable, Swettenham has more on the Canadians, and is perhaps the best-researched of these.
Similar more in-depth analysis is given by Ullman's 3 volume series and an intensely British one by Michael Kettle, also in 3 volumes.

Primitive and thought provoking.
I read this book a long time ago the key themes are still clear in my mind. I remember being struck by the brutality of it during the interactions between Dom and Va, two people from primitive tribes who each brought something to the relationship and ultimately the society they created.

A History Major's Best Friend!!!!
For anyone studying European History, this book is a must-have. I used it last year in my college-level history course, and it quickly became my best friend. It contains all the necessary information, and tons more besides. But because the book contains so much useful information, it is quite heavy reading. Its vocabulary and content is intended for the serious historical inquiry, not for people with a casual interest in the subject matter. Still, being a history major, I love this book, and can appreciate its breadth, its depth, its accuracy, and its recounting of history. By far, this is the best and most comprehensive look at European history I've ever seen.

Go For it!
I've had this book for awhile, and finally decided to try it out. I followed the recipe for Beef Stew with Mushrooms, Bacon, and Pearl Onions ( and yes I tweaked it some, cause I can...), and it still came out great.

This book offers sensible information about the qualities that make a stew a stew. It offers a general format for making a stew, and I found the recipes to be flexible. I added some extras to the above recipe, and still enjoyed my end-product very much.

I initially made this purchase, because of the quality of product and information that Cook's Illustrated has provided me over the years. I find that the information is precise and simple enough to improve anyone's cooking level. C.I. will help you simplify the choices made in purchasing items ranging from cookware and appliances, to cookbooks and various food items/products. Thank you.

engrossing

Good yet flawed
This is one of those books that you assume cannot work: an anthology of fantasy-science-fiction-Christmas stories. Somehow it manages to, despite a large gaping flaw near the end.

It kicks off on a strong note with Julian May's heartrending "Star of Wonder," in which a saddened starship commander comes to Earth on a fateful night, and encounters a certain baby born in a desert stable. Dennis McKiernan's "Ornament" is sweet and poignant, although readers may not fully absorb the point of Rufous the fox and the Pysk Tynvyr without reading his other works. Andre Norton provides a sweet "Very Dickinsy Christmas," in which a young woman encounters a ghost at a Christmas ball.

Christopher Stasheff provides a delightful "What are we going to do with Grandfather?", in whichwe see a funny, endearing SF story about charity and Christmas cheer. "I Sing of a Maiden" displays Judith Tarr's great skill in atmosphere and beautiful language, where a young intellectual encounters Thomas Becket, who helps bring the spirit of Christmas back to her. Gael Baudino's "Tidings of Comfort and Joy" is the only blot on this collection: its only purpose seems to be to let her obnoxious, self-absorbed Wiccan protagonist sleep with a Catholic priest. The main character seems to have no identity beyond being a witch; virtually every thought and sentence reflects that. Fortunately the collection sprinmgs back into style with Richard Christian Matheson's "Holiday," complete with a sunbathing Santa.

If you can bypass Baudino's disgusting story, this is a sweet collection of heartfelt, inspired stories about Christmas. Delightful read for Christmas and fantasy buffs alike.

A Must for Surgical, IM, and EM Residents!
For a book that conspicuously describes itself as a "pocket sized manual", the Manual of Common Bedside Surgical Procedures is curiously large. Measuring 6 inches in width from spiral binding to cover edge, the manual is the exact same dimensions as the pockets of 3 of my lab coats (all by different manufacturers). Thus, it is impossible to put this book in the pocket of a size 38 lab coat. Nonetheless, it is the only major complaint this reviewer has about this book.

Written by the Halsted Residents at Johns Hopkins Hospital, the book covers most of the common bedside procedures any surgical, IM or ER resident may encounter. Many handbooks cover a few of these topics (ie, nasogastric intubation, urinary catheterization, sutures, etc.) but not nearly in depth as does Chen's work. From Airway Management, through vascular access procedures, lumbar punctures, splinting to needle biopsies and joint injections the book covers everything well. Each procedure includes:

-indications for the procedure -contraindications -anesthesia needed (if any) -equipment ( I LOVE having a "shopping list" handy when I'm doing procedures) -patient positioning -step by step technique instructions -complications and management after the procedure

Several of the procedures also have graphics to aid in the positioning of the device, incision site,or relevant anatomy.

The book does provide a cautionary warning in the Preface that experience and knowledge cannot be replaced by simply following directions in a book. Despite this statement, I was suprised that some of more highly specialized procedures did not contain enough information about the difficulty or the suitability for a house officer. For example, when the vermillion border of the lip is disrupted, a 1 mm error in matching up the edges is visible to the naked eye. Because of this and the potential for scarring on the face, most surgical residents I know prefer to leave such procedures to Plastic Surgeons and/or their residents. It would perhaps be prudent for some of the more specialized and/or potentially troublesome procedures to include mention of the pitfalls and the possible need for consultation.

All in all, the book is a valuable resource for the fresh resident and I would recommend it to anyone doing a surgical, medicine, or emergency medicine residency as an asset to their book collection.

A Great Read for Kids!
I discovered this book while browsing for quality literature to bring to my classroom. I read this book because it fits my third grade curriculum and has a low reading level. Meet Christopher Columbus is an excellent introduction to biographies and explorers. The format of the book allows for less experienced readers to read small parts of his life without being overwhelmed. The language is simple enough for children to comprehend the main idea and details presented without difficulty. The history is accurate and presented in a logical fashion. I recommend this to parents and teachers to help students learn about Columbus as well as improve their reading!

Positioning the Missionary: John Booth Good and the Colonial Confluence of Cultures
Published in Paperback by Univ of British Columbia (1999)
Author: Brett Christophers
Amazon base price: $27.95
Average review score:

Positioned for success
A challenging but interesting and ultimately rewarding read. Christophers develops his theme with an almost lyrical style, the evolutionary passages setting the scene for his later analysis with his trademark deconstuctionist prose. His insights carry one successfully to a level of understanding which makes one almost embarrassed to have become so involved in such a remarkably obscure topic - but perhaps not for much longer! If this remarkable literary and research talent never writes again at least we shall have Positioning The Missionary as both a stunning debut and worthy legacy.
