George Grant: A Biography

Expert Journalism on Thought
This is a very easy book to read; I hold this out as a virtue since George Grant was a very complicated man. Christian does well to stick to the facts of Grant's life and then when necessary add insight to the scaffolding. There is a human quality present throughout. The all-too-human is not totally absent; although, it is obvious the author greatly admires Grant, and it is apparent Grant was his ad-hoc tutor, friend and dinner guest on many occasions. The fruits of this familiarity are gossipy tidbits about Grant's dinner with Leo Strauss and Grant's squabbles with Fulton Anderson of the University of Toronto, among other stories. This biography can serve as an introduction to many of Grant's philosophical inspirations- Simone Weil, Martin Heidegger, and Leo Strauss- as well as documenting an important part of Canada's political and social progress (maybe Grant would use a word other than progress) from a colonial state to the fragile position it now holds in the modern world.

Inspirational book
I'm not normally a big fan of parenting books. It seems as if they all have very definative ideas of what "to do" and what "NOT to do." Inevitably I end up feeling guilty as I find myself commiting actions listed under the "what not to do" list. I found this book very inspirational, it is full of cute, meaningful stories and suggestions of ways to handle different situations with your young daughters. I found myself unable to put it down once I got started. It's a wonderful glance into the world of "GIRLS!"

Gnosis or Ancient Wisdom in the Christian Scriptures or the Wisdom in a Mystery

Kingsland's "Gnosis" ahead of its time
Having studied approximately 30 volumes on gnosticism and early Christianity (all of the others having been written since publication of the Nag Hammadi texts), I was astounded to find that a British theosophist, writing in 1936, had reached conclusions concerning human spirituality that contemporary writers are only beginning to approach.

Using meticulous, literal translations of scripture from ancient Hebrew and Aramaic, Kingsland demonstrates that the Bible did not reveal a new theology, but merely brought the teachings of the ancient Egyptians and wisdom of the Upanishads to a Hebrew audience.

Kingsland shows that Judaism and Christianity did not break new ground in monotheism, and that the term itself is a misnomer. (A literal translation of Genesis, for instance, refers to {"him, the gods" -- a deliberate ambiguity demonstrating that the divine is neither singular nor plural, but infinite and beyond definition.) He was also a fervent believer in the "power to move mountains." And, while giving no evidence that he had (or had not!) achieved mastery of the physical realm through his own spiritual development, he leaves the reader convinced that the powers attributed to Jesus are within the reach of anyone.

A must read for any seeker of the higher spiritual truths! If you read only one book on "gnosis," start here!

Expanding the idea of prayer
This book is about having an attitude of prayer, about broadening our understanding of the forms prayer takes so that we no longer separate prayer as a distinct activity but incorporate prayer as life lived in communication with God. As Kathy Coffey writes, "Bringing God into daily life means a constant movement back and forth between the action and the reflection." We respond to God's initiative, His activity in our lives, Ms. Coffey suggests, by immersing ourselves in the awareness that what is human is permeated by the divine. She uses short chapters to delineate how this may be accomplished. Using examples from her own life she takes ordinary experiences and reworks them into "material for meditation." At the conclusion of each chapter she poses questions for reflection. For example, in her section called "Transforming Time" she substitutes for the Liturgy of the Hours spontaneous prayer at each interval of the day and ends with these questions: "Have you ever tried to punctuate the day with prayer? How did it go? Choose a Psalm and expand an experience of morning, noon, afternoon, evening, or night into a meditation." I usually don't like such exercises, but I found these to be helpful in considering my reactions to her ideas. A very appealing book, easy to read in short snatches of time, and inspiring in the truest sense of the word--breathing new life into prayer.

Reveals the Reality of the Experience of the Holy Spirit
this is an amazing book, ranking up there with Buber's 'Ecstatic Confessions', Kapleau's 'Three Pillars of Zen', and the 1960's film 'Holy Ghost People', as being a valuable collection of authentic religious experience. Thankfully, African Americans have preserved the experience of the Holy Spirit described in this book in Gospel Music. The traditions described in this book deserve to be revived and preserved, i.e. 'the mourner's bench', and singing in a circle out in a field at night. It seems to me this book helps to show that we are all slaves to the world and society until freed by the holy spirit.

The secondmost read book in Christendom
The Blessed Jacobus's compilation of the miraculous, "Golden Legend" carries you along as it brings you through the image-filled lives of the saints. Crowded, in a most woundrous fashion, with miracles, long martyrdoms, impossible but believable feats, quotable lines, long explanations of extreme intricacy, intriguing dialogue and a most enjoyable theme, it is enjoyable for those who read page after page and enjoy the long story, ending in triumph. It can also be accessible to those who enjoy anecdotes, except here they are pious. They begin the same way, usually--"A friar minor..." or such. It's hard to stop paging through it
