Clear Answers to Moral Questions
Common Good, Uncommon Questions deals with pressing moral questions in a clear and honest manner. The book, often used as a college textbook but not limited to this use, is a wonderful tool to discerning what is at the root of a moral issue and what the Church's stance on the issue is.

I am not a fan of mystery novels, but this was exceptional.
The characters are very real and believable. As the story unfolds, the reader is drawn to ponder the smaller mysteries behind the lives of each character, making it a very enjoyable read. The personal spiritual applications are not heavy handed, but the Truth is there woven throughout the developing plot. I look forward to the next installment of the "Lake Champlain Mysteries", and am convinced you will too

The Dance of the Divine
Once in a while a book comes along that is so beautifully written that it moves one to tears, such is this one. Frey has taken the theme of the Bible - God's love - and written it down in an easy to understand, poignant exposition. He moves from the Creation story, through the New Testament, to us and the necessity of our new creation in a style that is at once friendly and yet demanding.
This is not a "preachy" type of book, yet it compels the reader to confront himself and his relation with the God of Creation, and therein lies the hope. Hope is more than the wish that things will be better in the future, for those things often do not happen. Frey tells us that those types of wishes are illusions. Then he goes on to picture for us the dynamic movement of God in our world, and helps us to see that just as God said, "It is good many," years ago, He still says that today about us if we let Him work in our lives and to make in the person we were supposed to be.
I definitely would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to explore what it means to have a relationship with God, or to the person who wants to find out how God has been at work in this world all down through the ages.

a how-to manual
Dangerous Prayer by William O'Malley, sj

William O'Malley has taught religion to high school boys (Fordham Prep in New York City) for years and it shows: he speaks to get your attention and he keeps the message short and sweet.

The introduction to this book is wonderfully entertaining all by itself, dusting away the cobwebs of what many of us learned about prayer, and it helps us re-orient ourselves if need be. And then Fr. O'Malley gets serious describing a wide variety of ways to pray, each explanation followed by an exercise, where one tries this particular approach to prayer on for size.

Unfortunately, when I read this book, being a good girl, I did exactly what I was told to do, and so I felt that I had to actually do each exercise before I went on to the next section. I almost never finished. For many people it would probably be better to read the book completely through, without stopping to "do" . Mark somehow those prayer-forms which look promising and then to go back and practice those sections. ( If you are borrowing this book from the parish library, just xerox or take notes on the section you are interested in.)

A prayer exercise which I found personally fruitful was to physically put a chair in front of one, and to visualize Jesus sitting there. Talk to him. Listen. What might he say to you?

It took me a couple of days to get comfortable with visualizing Jesus, knowing that this was "just" my imagination and trusting that imagination is a part of our prayer life. Talking to him? No problem. Listening? How do I know what I am hearing? Fr. O'Malley guides one through these difficult questions.

Some of the prayer exercises bored me; some were exciting. There certainly was something for everyone. What a teacher! What a topic! This is a man who believes that prayer is a real force and power in our world. Dangerous, indeed!

"Chief Cornerstone to the Christian Library"
This comprehensive one of a kind dictionary covers the span of six centuries, and penetrates into the marrow of the priciple influences of Christianity; whether they be pope or caesar, christian or pagan, orthodox or heretic this impressive volume handles nearly every detail necessary to impart an image of the individual and the indelible impact they made upon the pervasive expanse of Christian history. The facts are straight-foward, and bias is placed only when the information is in need of discretion, not distortion...highly recommended.

Festooning "Our Father"
One of CSLewis' strategies for prayer was to "festoon the Lord's Prayer," using the words as a scaffold or frame on which to drape the particularities of his own situation. Disciples' Prayer will help the reader do just that. The chapters lead the reader through the prayer in a methodical and meditative analysis of language and concept. Such an analysis would be academic at best and irrelevant at worst if it were not consistently related to real, contemporary living. The author does not leave us with a set of constructs that have no practical implications. Prayer is a matter of daily incarnational living as well as a matter of words. Both are clearly explicated in this small but powerful volume.

Discovering the Depths

Worthy of Its Title
This is the best devotional book I have ever read. Unlike most devotional books, it is not a book of one minute devotions for the busy person. It is a twelve week journey. The author writes from the very depth of his soul and leads us in looking at ourselves and our relationship with God. You must be determined to read and review the chapters and follow through on the meditative exercises to glean the riches found here in this small book. I recommend it to anyone who is tired of fluff and desires to examine their interior lives and grow.

For your information, here is a listing of the contents of this fine book:

1. The Inner Work of God

2. As a Flower Opens to the Sun

3. Letting Go My "Isaacs"

4. God Alone

5. "Wasting Time" for God

6. Seeing Things as They Really Are

7. Like A Glass Emptied of Water

8. The Gift of Community

9. Engaged in Brokenness

10. You Don't Have to Die on Every Cross

11. Empowered

12. Living Out of the Depths.

Issues addressed in this book include: abandonment to God, availablity to others and God, the pace of our lives, prayer, meditation, centering, discernment, the perspective of God, interior freedom and the narrowing of our exterior lives, the necessity of community, our role in addressing brokenness in the world, our presence and God's presence, the problem of focus, power and powerlessness and union with God.

Abortion hurts women - Understanding the pain
This concise book is a series of eight reflections on the real-life experiences of women who have had abortions. This enlightening book clarifies the concern of the Catholic Church for the humiliation and pain of so many women who desperately need to be understood, pardoned and given a chance to repair the hurt they have caused and of which they themselves are often the first victims. The book will inspire post-abortive women to witness to the lie of abortion in order to usher in the new culture of life. Do Not Lose Hope would also be a thoughtful gift for your parish priest, who would benefit from a deeper understanding of women seeking reconciliation after abortion. Highly recommended for those on both sides of the abortion debate.
