Well, Three Stars for One, Four for the Other
This is actually a reprinting of two Chesney novels. The first, The Love Match, is the final volume of a trilogy. You can enjoy it quite well without having read the first two books, however. This is a high-quality story with a great heroine and fabulous secondary characters as well as a hero who is much more sympathetic than many. Felicity, the heroine, has been left with a fortune in jewels by her adoptive parent but is determined not to use them. Instead she decides to make her living as a novelist. Her attempt turns into a best-selling novel, but her authorship is discovered, and the gentleman who finds her out pledges to help her discover the secret of her birth...out of purely platonic friendship, of course. Naturally things work out just as we hoped in the end but getting there is three-quarters of the fun. This is the novel I would give four stars to.

The second novel, Quadrille, I would give just three stars, although it is also an enjoyable read. The story centers around Hugo and Mary. Mary is a plain girl who was married to Hugo for his title, while she brought her desperately needed fortune to him. Hugo is an officer in the British army and brought her along with him to Brussels. The details of the Battle of Waterloo are for the most part seen through the eyes of those who stay behind, but it is after the pair return to England that the story really picks up. Mary falls in love with her gruff, much-older husband, while he does not care much one way or the other for her. There are some rather coarse and shocking moments in this book (I believe it is one of Chesney's earlier efforts) but it is still fun. And when purchasing two books for the price of one, it is hard to feel a loser.

Wonderfully daring, romantic, and exciting.
It is the story of the lamb being thrown into the lion's den all over again. Except this time there is a chance of love, a hint of passion. I absolutely loved this book. This was the first romance I had ever read and that was five years ago. Now I can read it over and over again and still love it. Mrs. Budley is a wonderful character and as she falls from grace, she falls with a loud thud. I can honestly recommend this for anyone: beginner, a romance-aholic, or anything in between. It is, in short, a wonderful romance.

Much better than usual, the heroine was normal!!!
It was a pleasure to read. Jane was normal, and overshadowed by her beautiful, unpleasant older sister. But how many of us actually fall in love with our childhood crush, and they with us- so much as to want to marry us, even with our "unfashionable" upbringing? Good light reading, and more realistic than the first.

A humorous romance, yet it lacks that certain something.
I enjoy Marion Chesney's works and highly suggest them to anyone who is just beginning to start reading in this genre. They are all humorous and lively, with just a touch of romance. Back in Society is a fitting end to the sextet The Poor Relation. I found that it was probably ranked third best of this sextet. I preferred Vol.no.3 and Vol.no.1. Volume 6 refines on Lady Fortesque's character and brings out Miss Tonks, who had otherwise been a Nobody in the previous volumes. The humour is definitely provided and the romance is very sweet, as it is in all of her books. However, like most of Marion Chesney's books, this one is missing that certain something. The something that only experienced readers of this genre could find important. I began my reading in the genre with Volume Number 3 of this series, so I must confirm that Marion Chesney is a wonderful author to begin romance with.

Great entertainment, but kind of similar to her other books.
Marion Chesney's books are very entertaining if you are only going to read two or three of them, or else you would feel like you've read this before.

Final story in the "Poor Relation" series... GREAT !
Marion Chesney continues to delight most with her unusual romp into the strangest arenas! Where does she find her inspiration? REMARKABLE! This final episode is typically full of surprises and hidden romance. Almost driven to suicide by her cruel father, horrid governess and an old geezer suitor, she's saved by the owners of the "Poor Relation Hotel". They take her under their wings and come up with a crazy idea to bring her out for the Season, as a country miss, right under her awful father's nose! She trys to fall in love; misses, but proceeds to save the life of the handsome but naughty Comte de Mornay. This is the craziest of the Poor Relation series, and extremely excellent!

The Ghost and Lady Alice

Not Worth th Download!
I was hoping for a much better written story based on a very appealingingly romantic idea of falling in love with a handsome ghost. Something important is missing such as sympathy or plain liking for the ghost. It was a fast and simple read and not worth the download.

Charming; Unusual Ghostly Romance
There's no such thing as ghosts... are there? Poor abused scullery maid Alice makes a plea "I wish you were here now sir" to the portrait of the Eight Duke of Haversham (Gervase) -and suddenly there he is! Surprised to be alive, he promises to meet Alice again later and begins his hedonistic after-life, stealing food, loving women (four a night!) and causing havoc in the Tenth Duke's home. He is an unusual ghost in that he eats, loves and can make solid objects pass through walls. But back to poor Alice! After almost being raped by the "Groom of the Chambers," she calls on the Duke again and he appears in time to save her. Then he whisks her off to a secret room where he comes up with the idea of making her into a lady. Dressing her, teaching her French to cover her accent and gathering buried jewels he remakes her into the Comtesse de la Valle-Chenevix. Alice is Cinderella to a specter "Godmother." She even gets to go to the ball - well a masquerade.

Gervase wants her off his hands and married. Acting as her Uncle, he sets her up in London with a companion who paves the way among the ton. Then back to his former estate to write his memoirs. But all is not ending happy for Alice. Her piteous call to him results in saving her from an unsavory fiancée. Then she is set up with a new companion and a new love interest quite different from the first ones. Is this the end? What of the love she still harbors for her handsome ghost? I shall leave you to read the ending for intrigue and trouble still follow our hapless heroine. And what is the story behind the strange new companion? Can a dead man love again?

Spellbinding story! Worth reading because it is so unusual - and ends unusual also. Quick and smooth reading with just enough trauma and wonderful romance.

Ladies don't believe in ghosts. Do scullery maids?
Marion Chesney travels from her norm, to delight and entertain a rakish ghost! While he's enjoying being brought back from the dead, he promises to return the favor of scullery maid Alice, by helping her to become a lady of quality. Attempted murder, subsequent romance and outrageous humor abound!

Lady Fortescue Steps Out (The Poor Relations, Vol 1)

Horrible
This is the first Chesney book I read and it will probably be the last. It was depressing and SAD. The author condones stealing and makes it seem like a joke. And after they no longer have any reason to steal, some of them will obviously do it again. The people in general are made to appear dirty, rude, and without simple emotions like love, friendship, etc. The love-plot is pitiful and shallow. Marion Chesney should lighten up, give her characters some basic morals, and enjoy the Regency Era.

Loved It!
I loved this book and will probably read all of Marion Chesney's other works! I'm such a romantic history buff! I thought it was funny and entertaining and a delightful change from what some people think great readers should read - like books on the mating rituals of pigeons or something! If you love romance and like history, then I am sure you'll love this!

Frivolous but fun...
Although this isn't Dickens' Tale of Two Cities or Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, it is a funny and heart-warming book. I loved it! This is the first book in Chesney's Poor Relations series and introduces Lady Fortescue, as well as Colonel Sandhurst and the other poor relations who start up their aptly-named Poor Relation hotel.
