You won't believe the trouble two brats can cause when...
Lord Percy Hunterdon inherits them and a Gothic horror of an estate. He's determined to hire a governess of superior caliber, when Jean Morrison (desperately) answers his ad. She has never before been a governess, and when she encounters the dark, dirty castle and the evil dispositions of her new charges, her dreams come crashing down upon her. Almost too suspenseful, when she risks her own neck to save the day.

The Wild Wager
It was a challenge that Miss Penelope Yarwood, Euphemia Perkins, and Letitia Helmsdale all smugly informed her that the Marquess of Cleveden was at once the most-eligible and the most elusive catch in the London marriage mart. Society's most dazzling beauties had failed to win him, and a newcomer like Fiona had not a ghost of a chace to make him look at her twice. That was all that fiery-tempered Fiona had to hear, and she bet-far more wealth than she possessed- that she would snare the maddening marquess before the seasons end. Now Fiona faced the risk of losing a wager she could not pay-and the even greater danger of losing her heart... This is really a good book. A Real page turner.

Heartwarming...
All of the Chesney books that I've read have been great. They are funny and actually quite informative about England's regency period. This was no exception.

Enjoyable reading
Things sure were different in the early 1800s. This book is always interesting and it seems to give a good portrayal of how life was a couple hundred years ago.

"The Deception" was a book not to be put down!
I am an avid reader of Chesney novels - the only fiction that I do read. She spins such believable tales that I long to be in Regency England! You will not put this, nor any other Chesney novel down.

Best Regency Author
In my opinion, Marion Chesney is the best of all regency authors.
Her books aren't more sugary than treacle syrup, nor are they
ever so proper like some regencies are. And best of all she
doesn't pull out every darn regency slang word that ever existed
and put it all in one novel like some do. She educates about the
Regency Era and at the same time amuses with her quirky humor
and good romance between the hero and heroine.
The Six Sisters is my favorite of her six book series and Minerva
is my favorite of all her 80 to 90 novels. (99% of which I have
read.

The best book ever!
Being the oldest in the family, Minerva has many responsibilites, not only she has to take care of the house, she has to be a mother also. Her dad was addicted to hunting; therefore, he sent her to London to have her season, so she can marry a rich guy and he can use that money for hunting and sending the 2 boys to school. The story takes place when the most handsome, exotic Lord Sylvester Comfrey came in, and make her life turn upside down.
I suggest you read this book cuz it's really really good! and funny too I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH!!

not up to Chesney's usual standard
I've read at least three of Marion Chesney's series of books and I presumed I would enjoy this one. But after reading the first two books--which, by the way, have the same plot--I was disappointed. The stories simply were not as exciting or well-thought-out as those in her other series, such as The Travelling Matchmaker. A friend told me she found Marion Chesney dull. If this is where she began, no wonder.

Put this book back into print...
This story is so refreshing and the subsequent volumes keep you highly entertained, due to the author's remarkable ability in maintaining intrigue in this story of the loss of the childhood home of the six Beverley sisters. As the eldest, Isabella is chosen to court the roguish gambler Mr.Judd, the new owner. Her parents and sisters have no sympathy for her and encourage this horrible man's attentions. So, will she swallow her pride and go for the handsome Lord Fitzpatrick? Doubtful, Lord Fitzpatrick fears Isabella can never love a man as she does her home.

A wonderful read!
I accidentally came across this book in our library because of the lovely pencil illustration on the cover, and was surprised at the carefully drawn out character of a young self-centered woman who realizes that external possessions/position do not always a happy/person make. I loved this book!. It is clean, emphasizing relationships, and the dialogues both spoken and in thought are really funny and insightful. I was touched and felt honored to have come across a book as honest, sweet and full of self-discovery as this. I recommend this book highly!!! I wish they would take it out of the out of print section! LeeAkiko

A Perfect finish
I discovered the Daughters of Mannerling quite by accident in the library one day, and got hook. I was worried about how this author would end her series, but the end makes everyone happy, with a slight shiver.

Good finale to this regency
Lizzie Mannerling, the youngest of the sisters and the only unmarried one, is her mother, Lady Beverly's last hope to keeping the family house. When Gervase, the Duke of Sevenshire arrives to speak with his aunt, who is serving as a governess, Beverly sees her chance. If Lizzie marries the eligible bachelor, who has just purchased the house and seeks an aristocratic wife, the house remaisn with the family.

There are three things wrong with Beverly's plan. The first is that Lizzie will only marry for love of a man, not a house. The second is that Gervase plans to make his own selection and Lizzie is not in the running. The third problem is the gothic house itself which seems opposed to any union between Lizzie and Gervase. So what's mother to do, simple interfere, matchmake, and pray that the two of them realize that they have a chance for a lifetime of love.

The sixth and final installment in Marion Chesney's "Daughters of Mannerling" is a beautiful Regency romance. The lead protagonists are brilliantly written characters, but it is the myriad of eccentric yet extremely interesting secondary players that make THE HOMECOMEING, like its five predecessors in their particular years, into one of the top Regencies of this year.

An author to add to my list of favorites
This was my first book from Marion Chesney. An old-fashioned romance that is engaging and concise. I am hooked.

Frederica in Fashion

quite a taking little thing
I must say that even though the writing was not of the best quality at times, I found the plot interesting and Frederica a sympathetic character. There is something about this series that I like very much. Even though each of the sisters has a flaw (Anabelle can be quite annoying), each is very sympathetic and the reader can readily enter into the lives of the sister. I loved Frederica because I could relate to her shyness and insecurity. I guess all of us wish we could find a wicked duke who could see through to our inner beauty.

One of the two best of the six sisters series!
This is one of the best of the six sisters series. Believable characters, deft storytelling and a charming hero and heroine make this book as well as Diana the Huntress the very best in the six sisters series. Poor lonely Frederica, the youngest of the six famous Armitage sisters (famous for their beauty and legendary for their successful marriages)believes herself to be no beauty at all and have absolutely no charm whatsoever. She decides never to marry as she finds her brothers-in-law to be a trifle overwhelming and prefers to stick her nose into books and her head in the clouds. Frederica runs away from school to find peace and solitude on her own, but her isolated tranquility is shattered when she catches the eye of the Duke of Pembury also known as the Wicked Duke. Don't waste your money on the other sisters' stories.

Miss Davenport's Christmas

Slender Volume Full of Surprises
This was a rather interesting book about a pair of sisters (Gillian and Amanda Davenpot) who were raised rather isolated from society and even each other by strict Puritan parents. Because of a smallpox epidemic in London and fear that the girls would be corrupted by the army in Yorkshire, the two Davenport sisters are given a short reprieve from their cloistered life. They are sent to distant relatives, Sir John and Lady Harrington. It happens to be Christmastime and though Jilly and Amanda's parents don't celebrate it, they do not realize the Harrington's do! Lady Harrington welcomes the sisters with open arms, giving them a holiday full of liveliness and spirit! She assists in making them fashionable by updating their dull clothes and buys them new gowns! Of course during this holiday in the country, there are plenty of young people and love is in the air.

This book contains a great deal of conversation much like Barbara Cartland's style of writing. You had to read closely to understand the story fully. I disliked that the sisters were raised with such cruelty and felt they "forgave" their parents much too quickly in the end, but I guess those times were different and parents used drastic, corporal punishments to control their children.

I loved the explanation of Regency Christmas rituals and celebrations many of which survive until today. Some of these celebrations were mentioned in other novels but I never understood fully before. If you read a lot of Regency novels, this is a great way to learn all about the traditions. This is a quick reading novel with just enough tension to make it interesting. Marion Chesney books are often full of surprises and she styles each book differently.

A sweet, fun book
I read this book many years ago and I still came on Amazon[.com] to look for it because I loved it so much! The synopsis actually doesn't do it justice. The Davenport sisters, by a little luck, are spendign Christmas with their matchmaking aunt. The girls are the daughters of Puritans who never really have big, fancy Christamses, so everything that there aunt does, who firmly belives in big fancy Christmases, is so knew to them. Its a lot of fun because of that, Chesney conveys this feeling of being a little kid again and being so amazed at Christmas. Plus the heroes are incredubly dashing, of course each girl gets her own. Gillian, the main chracter, is one of those fun, spirited heroines you like but shes awkward around men. The end of the book is really interesting and all in all I loved it, which isnt much of a surprise cuz I love anything Marion Chesney does! :)
