All the Words on Stage: A Complete Pronunciation Dictionary for the Plays of William Shakespeare
Published in Hardcover by Smith & Kraus (2003)
Authors: Louis Scheeder and Shane Ann Younts
Amazon base price: $45.00
Average review score:

Vital for all Shakespearean Actors
All the Words on Stage is not only informative but essential to any actor who plans to perform any of the plays of William Shakespeare.

It explains in laymen's terms how to pronounce any of the words that appear in Shakespeare's text. It is as vital as the Shakespeare Lexicon.

I recently completed a run of three Shakespeare plays from the history cycle, Richard II, Henry IV:Part l and Henry IV:Part 2. I found All the Words on Stage invaluable in my rehearsal process. No matter how talented your dramaturge or your speech coach is, they can't possibly provide the pronunciation for each word that appears in the play...All the Words on Stage can. I highly recommend it.

Finally,a Shakespeare pronunciation guide that really works!
For years, actors, directors, and dramaturgs have struggled with a variety of materials for guidance on the pronunciation of Shakespeare's names, along with a multitude of other resources that helped with the pronunciation of obscure words appearing in his plays. Now Shane Ann Younts and Louis Scheeder, who work in the rehearsal studio with this text every day, have put everything - names plus unfamiliar words - into one easy-to-carry book, with phonetic pronunciations that are so easy to read that they can be instantly applied. This is a groundbreaking work for everyone involved in the rehearsal process of Shakespeare's plays. Every Shakespeare actor or student should own a copy, and no rehearsal table should lack one or three copies for easy reference during every stage of the rehearsal process! Thank-you Shane Ann and Louis, for creating a terrific tool to assist us in this day-to-day process of moving the words off the page in order to bring them to life on the stage. Bravo!!!

Exceptional Reference Book
It may not contain "all" the words on stage, but this extraordinary volume does provide a complete phonetical listing of every word and name from every Shakespeare play - words not found anywhere else, including Webster's and the Oxford English Dictionary. This book fills a long-awaited need on the bookshelves of anyone involved in theatre, linguistics, literature, education or who just happens to be a "Bardophile." The idiot-proof format gives complete pronunciation breakdowns in 2 ways, using standard phonetics (the International Phonetic Alphabet) and using a simple respelling (the authors' own system). Also included is a column listing common words to demonstrate the proper sound.

Thank You to Beverly Cleary and Henry Huggins!
My 9-year-old son wasn't an avid or enthusiastic reader, and when it came time for his first book report, my husband and I panicked. We were afraid we'd never find a book that sparked his interest enough to want to read through to the end.

Thank goodness for Henry Huggins. This story is simply adorable, and I was delighted to see my son laugh out loud as he read the book. After he finished a chaper, he'd run and tell me what new mess Henry and his lovable scoundrel of a dog, Ribsy, had gotten themselves into. In fact, I actually caught my son reading the book on his own, with no prodding from me or his father.

This book was published in 1950 and so my son did have a few questions about why things were so inexpensive in the story, but other than that, "Henry Huggins" is not dated at all and the story is just entertaining now as it was in the 1950s.

I am so thankful that I purchased this book and that it not only kept my son's interest but helped him realize that books could be fun. This story should be a great first "chapter book" for any child who is ready to move past picture books.

One day Henry finds a dog and tries to take it home.
One day Henry finds a dog and he tries to take it home on the bus. Henry and Ribsy become best friends. One funny chapter was when they entered a contest and Henry tried to clean up Ribsy and mistakenly put pink powder all over Ribsy and they ended up winning because Ribsy was a pink dog. I am going into 4th grade and I read this book for school summer reading. I liked it a lot.

A must-have for Henry Huggins fans!
My all-time favorite book is HENRY HUGGINS. I am a 34-year old mother of 2 boys who are too young to read the book by themselves and not interested in sitting through a book with very few pictures. However, I have been eager to share this wholesome story with them. So, this book on CD was perfect!! I play it in the car and I don't hear a sound out of them for miles--they are so engrossed in the story and don't want to miss a word. (great for long trips!) They love Henry's adventures & his crazy dog, Ribsy. Neil Patrick Harris does the most fantastic job reading this wonderful story. His voice changes so much for each character that you would swear it was more than one person reading the story. From Mrs. Huggins to Mr. Pennycuff, the pet shop owner, Neil Patrick Harris keeps us entertained with his impersonations of the characters. I love this CD set. I'm thrilled to be able to share Beverly Cleary's timeless stories with my children and I know they will love them just as much when they actually learn how to read! I hope they have Neil Patrick Harris record the other Henry Huggins books too. Super job!!

A splendid rags-to-riches story
This sequel is quite entertaining but... too much is happenning for the reader to savor the flavor of the novel. The situations seem to rush just a little bit too much and I keep being impressed with Angelique's numerous talents. I understand that necessity forces her to take on and accomplish many things but she does not seem to learn how to do things (cook, for example) but aquires the knowledge instantaneously and becomes the best at it. (I wish I could do that!!!) I do appreciate the fact that there is no re-telling of the plot of the first book, which would have been tedious. I love the incredible way in which the characters are brought back. There is also a subtle foreshadowing which made me keep going and read the other books. Overall, it's a good read and I will go to the ends of the earth with Angelique, but the first book affected me more emotionally while this one reads like a quick-paced adventure story, with much action and not as much substance.

A great Book!
I'm only 15 yeras-old but I really enjoy reading. I've read some great books (like The Mist of Avalon; or one of Agatha Chritie's mistery) but this one really caught my attention. It was recommended by mother and I truly liked it. Not only this one, but the entire series of Angelique. It has a great story and it's well written. What a great life this Angelique had!! Really exciting! So, I strongly recommend for you to read, not only this one but entire series. Believe me, it's worth it!

i like these books
Wow! Angelique books are totally brill! I remember I fell in love with the cover of the original Pan edition of Angelique in Revolt, but didn't buy it when my mum said it was only part of a series. Now I buy Angelique books whenever I see them, and I have thirteen copies of that book alone; since it's important to read it in all the different languages to pick up on the subtle nuances that might be lost in different translations. Isn't it cool in the first book when she's handed the poisoned drink?! Anyway - The Road to Versailles is quite gruelling going, cause it's the one where she has to live rough on the streets of Paris. I totally agree that "romance" is an absurd word to describe a book such as this, since the quality of subterfuge and all the business with her joining the Thieves cult at the Court of Miracles had more in common with a spy thriller or something. The only problem is that sometimes they're really badly written. Angelique and the Sultan was a bit of a pile of pants by comparison with the others - that is, with regard to psychology and poetry in the narrative. Especially in the Danish version. Anyway. Cool.

Very worthwhile and moving book
Cardinal Bernardin talks candidly about dealing with a false accusation of sexual misconduct, his panceatic cancer, and his later terminal illness and preparation for death. He talks about surrendering to the Will of God and how to do this. I found it helpful in finding peace within crisis, and hope within despair. I recommend it without reservation

Powerful Message - On forgivenss, giving , living and dying
Recently I lost my father to a 10 year bout with cancer. This book provided me with joy, tears and abudance within a month of my own fathers death. Cardinal Bernardin was a remarkable man who had the courage to face his accusers, his illness and ulitmately his death. He has reconfirmed that faith, hope, love, forgivenss and kindness is the very essentials of what life needs to be about. It is clear from the Cardinal as it was from my experience with my own father that even when you think you are at your darkest human hour you need to reach out and make a difference every single day until your final moment in this part of your journey here on earth.

This book is a must read for anyone who has doubted that there is peace in death. He reconfirms that the lessons most important in life are to continue to give of yourself every day despite the adversities you face. In his illness, through his false accusation and his wonderful rediscovery of a deeper faith in Christ it makes accepting God's plan for you important.

Anyone who has an ill parent or someone close to them should read this book it will give you a much clearer spiritual understanding of illness, death and living every moment under God's plan.

A Pastor's Journey
America was drawn to the story of Joseph Cardinal Bernardin when he publicly shared with the community of the Archdiocese of Chicago the news that his liver cancer was inoperable on August 30, 1996. The Cardinal wrote The Gift of Peace to share his thoughts on the last three years of his life. His writing reflects the principal role of a Roman Catholic bishop - - the teaching office, to nourish within the community the principles of faith illustrated by the realities that present themselves in the course of everyday life.

Like most Americans outside of Chicago, I first learned about the Cardinal in the news coverage that accompanied his last year on the front pages of the newspapers. He wanted to walk with the community as he confronted his death. Sharing with the community both the pain of his illness and the discoveries of the intellect that bridged for him, first acceptance of his terminal illness, and then the process of personal reconciliation of his life journey.

There are so many books upon the shelves of Amazon.com on the topic of Death and Dying. None of them adequate to the task of being "how to's", but offering reasonable guidance for that most personal of tasks, confronting personal death and death in the family. Yet, I keep coming back to The Gift of Peace. Perhaps, because of the Cardinal's one-to-one conversation by which he engages the reader.

For those of us that can prepare for death, a struggle may develop as we form a personal inner conversation to embrace with grace and maturity and purpose our changed fortune. The Cardinal models in the journey of his illness the direction our own path may take.

Upon hearing the first fateful news of his illness, the Cardinal experienced a feeling of helplessness. The same helplessness I nervously experienced when the heart specialist began taking my history. The Cardinal acknowledged then, as I did also, the state of great anxiety as patients wait to hear from doctors what their fate will be. "God was teaching me yet again just how little control we really have and how important it is to trust in him."

The Cardinal describes how terrible illness changes lives - - not only the life of the person carrying it, but also the lives of friends and family members who love and care for that person. We follow in the book's narrative the Cardinal's trajectory along illness as described by Therese A. Rando: keeping alive, understanding and acknowledging the illness, experiencing the pain, framing realistic expectations and completing unfinished business.

And in the midst of the Cardinal's struggle, he continued his own ministry to others with cancer. "Somehow when you make eye contact," he says, "when you convince people that you really care - - that at that particular moment they are the only ones that count - - then you establish a new relationship." It is all about entering into an intimacy with those we minister to, however brief, forever permanent.

Jesus learned this lesson from the Canaanite woman to whom he first avoided, saying he was sent to minister only to the house of Israel." She continued to confront him, to engage him. She established a relationship that from that moment forward propelling Jesus' ministry beyond Israel to embrace all the nations. For ministry, the Cardinal concludes, is about imparting a sense that "somehow you truly care and have somehow mediated the love, mercy and compassion of the Lord."

Ministry to the dying is all about strengthening the relationship between each person and God. I understand that each of our ministerial encounters is unique. Our need for healing is no different in dying than in living - - however the more apparent and actively sought out for. I strive to go to the bedside with practical skills fashioned around a dynamic toolbox of appropriate pastoral applications.

A dynamic shaped by what the Cardinal would call prayer and prayer's search for peace. Peace that accompanies recognition, acceptance, reconciliation. And as a pastor, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin offers us a simple prayer that we may find the gift of peace. It is in the journey toward death's great mystery that we call out to the Lord for peace. The peace that finds voice in prayer. Prayer that nourishes. Prayer that heals. Prayer that reconciles. Prayer that brings us to salvation.

Michael Jordan Returns to NBA (Again)
As big basketball fan, not to mention being a Jordan fan. Genie Saint Louis has hit the nail on the head. It's as if she has known Jordan all his life and with all this speculation of his return to the game this is a MUST read. Can't wait for the movie.

Yes, It Makes Sense for Michael to Return
Michael Jordan Returns to the NBA is both entertaining and easy reading that outlines humorously the how and why of his return to the NBA. History has shown that even a superstar's fifteen minutes of fame is fleeting. And even though Michael has taken a behind the scenes leadership role with the Wizards it doesn't fulfill his ingrain competitive spirit.

As Michael hears youngsters saying,"I want to be like Koby when I grow up," his overpowering need to prove that he will always be an icon gets the better of him and once again he dons a basketball uniform because as the author, Genie Saint Louis, stated, "Jordan doesn't need the money or the power. He wants to mold a whole team."

This book meets all of Micheal's die-hard fans' needs. We want to hold onto the thought that we will be able once again to be mesmerized by Michael as he glides through the air proving that he alone can do the impossible - guide one of the worst teams in NBA history to championship status.

Come on back, Michael, this book paves your way.

A classic about the struggle for domination of N. America
I was impressed by the work and analysis that Francis Parkman gave to the French-Indian War and the background of the war between England and France that spilled over to the North American continent. The background of the conflict was very interesting and I learned some points about it that I hadn't known before. Not only does Parkman give detail about the struggle in the present day United States, but also the struggle for Canada. The jealousy and rivalry between England and France was enourmous and in its path alot of victims were made such as the Native Americans and English and French Colonists. Two cultures that were very similiar, yet could not exist peacefully with each other, even across the Atlantic. The British may have won this war but their troubles were only beginning in America. This book was written over a century ago, yet it's language by the author and text make it a very interesting read and is considered a classic. Very Highly Recommended to all who want to know more about the history of Colonial North America.

Great History
As has been said, Montcalm and Wolfe is Parkman's masterpiece. It was the first thourough account of the French and Indian War and contains some of the most detailed descriptions of the people, places, and events that shaped the North American theater of the first truly global conflict. Here we encounter the dramatic events which lead toward the final confrontation for dominion over the continent. We see a young Virginia Colonel named George Washington leading troops into battle for the first time at Fort Necessity, Braddock's fateful campiagn along the Monogahela, the massacres at Fort Oswego and William Henry by the Indians under Montcalm, the fall of Fort Dusquene, and finally, the culmination of many long and bloody battles, the capture of Quebec and the almost romanticized deaths of Montcalm and Wolfe at the Plains of Abraham. What is truly interesting is that we see the war through the eyes of someone still living in a time when the Indian wars of the west were still being fought and when the country was in the grip of Manifest Destiny and, as a result, Parkman is often very harsh in his views of the Indians and their "savage" ways. Yet, even so, he often gives them more credit than most of his contemporaries.

It is unforunate that today so little is taught or learned about this important event in American history. Today, it seems that the French and Indian War is all but ignored save for being mentioned as a prelude to the American Revolution which it helped spawn rather than as the major turning point in the history of North America and the world. For it is this bloody conflict, fought in the unending wilderness of America, where French regulars and courer de bois crept through the dark woods alongside painted Huron and Ottawa warriors to attack the English settlements, and young redcoated soliders marched shoulder to shoulder to their horrific deaths by rifle ball and tomahawk, that gave birth to what would become the Untied States and changed the course of world history. But even more than that, it is a fascinating period of history more powerful than any piece of fiction. This is history of the highest order. Highly recommended.

An Epic Read for An Underrated War
Parkman "wrote the book" on the French and Indian War and created a benchmark for historians that has stood on its merits since published in 1884. Moreover, Parkman creates a primer on making history real and exciting for the reader. His writing style bridges the century since he wrote it. This book is one of seven in Parkman's series "The French and English in North America". Each volume was intended to stand alone. This, the final and most popular volume, covers the fall of Quebec and events leading up to it. The first chapter alone, "The Combatents" does an extraordinary job of setting the scene in Europe that led to this savage wilderness war in North America. Also of interest will be the foreword which paints a vivid picture of the unusual Mr. Parkman. "Montcalm and Wolfe" reads well, provides a sense of "being there" and must be one of the great histories not only of the battle for North America, but of European history as well.

Great read, but who wants overcomplicated peasant food?
I loved reading this book--the author is clearly passionate about food. I learned a lot from her explanations of various techniques. The recipes, however, take hours and hours to make, and don't look or taste like it. If I'm going to spend four hours on a Bolognese sauce, I don't want it to look and taste like the Hamburger Helper my college roommate used to eat when she was too drunk to know better. This book offers complicated recipes for very simple cuisine.

Excellent reading and wonderful recipes
Lynne truly researches her food topics and background. The book is fasinating - all about the Italian region, its food, and its history. A joy to read and learn from. She is also great to listen to on NPR. N.Alexander

A favorite cookbook
Every recipe I've tried from this cookbook is a winner. The Christmas pasta with sugar, almonds and orange zest, topped by a capon has become an annual tradition in our family. Whenever cooking from it, I constantly find myself getting lost in the anecdotes and historical background. In fact, this book actually helped direct us when planning our gastronomical tour of northern Italy.

Couldn't put it down
When my Grandfather told me that I could have all of his Louis L'Amour books (24 in all and all of the "Sackett's") I was extremelly excited. I picked up this book ("Sackett's Land") and was immediately drawn into the world of Barnabas Sackett, I couldn't put it down and finished it in 2 hours. I great book and not a "Western" (so don't let that bother you). I guarantee that you will be enchanted with this one.

The Best of the Sackett Novels
This novel which introduced us to the intriguing saga of the Sackett family is by far the best of the series. Set in 17th century England and America, this book creates vivid images of life during a time when freedom was not a given right, but something you had to fight for. The courageous Barnabas Sackett flees to America to start a new life with nothing but the clothes on his back and a deep sense of pride. Struggling to survive in the wild untamed land of what is now the USA, Barnabas finds himself faced with escaping from vicious pirates, battling the elements of the weather, and often times being the first white man to come face to face with the American Indians of the region. L'Amour does a fine job at telling this adventurous tale which will keep you flipping the pages from start to finish.

The Sakkett's Land A great book for anyone
Hello my name is Michael Toomey and I have just got done reading a book called Sackett's Land. It is another wonderful book written by the great western author of all times LOUIS L'AMOUR. Unlike most of his books the book starts out in England In the Fins. Barnabas Sackett is the Sackett in this book. He is the first Sackett to go to the Americas. It all started out with Barnabas getting in a fight with some on and then all hell breaks loose. The man who he got in a fight with is a powerful man with a lot of influence in England. Barnabas and Jublain are chased all through England. On is trip through England he meats a lot of different people. The question is will Barnabas make it to America and if he does will he make it back or be killed by savages? Well you just got to read it don't you.

I would like to thank my English Teacher for giving me the chance do do this book review Thanks Mr. Powell

Pippi Longstocking

I have loved Pippi for nearly twenty years!
I read my first Pippi Longstocking book in 1983 when I was eight years old, and although I'm now twenty five, she still makes me laugh. She is such a free spirit - she lives alone except for a horse and a monkey, says what she thinks, does whatever comes into her mind, no matter how ridiculous it is, she can laugh at herself, and she enjoys life. But the reason why I hold her in such regard now I'm an adult is that although she says and does whatever her heart desires, it's never done at the expense of anyone else's feelings.

The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking
Pippi Lonstocking was one of the first books that I read as a child ALL by myself. While looking for a birthday gift for my 6 year old niece, a reluctant reader, I remembered Pippi and the joy of reading this wonderful book by Astrid Lindgren. Not only was she able to read it by herself, but she would curl up in a corner of her room to finish the whole book! What a success! Pippi's whacky adventures provide the reader, especially young girls, with lots of fun.

One of the most engaging books written for boys and girls!
Pippi Longstocking is frequently one of the first chapter books read to children, and as a first grade teacher, I can attest to the value of its choice. Pippi is a larger than life character who does so many things that young children find absolutely wonderful and satisfying. * * * * * * * * * * * Pippi, an *orphan* with braids askew, lives all by herself at Villa Villekulla. Her only companions are her monkey and a horse (who lives on her porch).Children get to know Pippi through Annika and Tommy, *proper* children who live next door. Pippi looks at things as obliquely as her braids; she usually sees the positive side of things, unless she is requested to go to school or learn the multiplication tables. She has her own ideas about things, and simply cannot be made to follow the rules, but her way of disobeying is amusing and quite chathartic for children who ALWAYS have to follow the rules that adults make. She does not inspire kids to break the rules;she just makes them laugh with glee at her absurdity. She has *powers* that they adore!

Full Spectrum of Emotions finds Expression in these Cards
This is a powerful and beautiful deck. For fun or academic research, it can provide much history and contemplation (and a good bibliography). For divination, you will find a syncretic mix of traditional tarot (Crowley throughout; Robert Wang's influence is heavy in the Temple/Court cards) and a specific brand of African and American nature-bound spirituality. The all-inclusive spirit of Voodoo practice pervades the deeply moving readings that can come from this set and its guidelines.

Despite what an earlier reviewer said, I find nothing "dangerous," nothing to "fear" from this deck or the power it can potentially evoke (that is, for those looking for more than just a bit of fun, beauty and insight). For the believer in spirits and forces, there is true power to be tapped with this tool. You are constantly asked to look to your own "will" and true "Self" to guide you. Readings that forebode difficulties will not be evaded with this deck -- but guidance and assistance from the "Loa" is the key to meaningful or successful outcomes.

If you use this deck, it is best to truly understand the etymological and spiritual meaning of "sacrifice" -- "to make sacred." The best lesson I have learned from this deck is spelled out clearly in the book: "To sacrifice is to create a channel cut deep into the earth, through which benefit flows both ways. To sacrifice is to give freely to the sacred, to move one's attention from acquisition to open-handed giving..."

Dangerouse stuff, read and use with cautin
I have been using this tarot deck for three years and havs had amaizing results. Everyone knows me by my tarot deck. Though I recomend these cards wich are highly magical, infact I have never used a deck more powerful, and I have used many. I warn to use with mutch respect and honor. The book has some rituals that can get you into trouble " nothing that will kill you." There is a ritual on birthing the deck, and naming them. This was the first thing I did Madama L La Mama Chola has been with e for three years and I cant immagine life without her. "WORD TO THE WISE! " If you put the spirit in your deck, it will be a powerful deck capable of both good and evil, make sure to study on voodoo and Santeria befor attempting this.

Powerful and Strong Tarot Deck
This is the deck that I have used on forum groups, and in-groups settings. I have used this deck for many years, and though my interests in various Tarot styles have grown in various years, this one still remians one of my personal favorites. But honestly for those who have little knowledge of Afro-Caribbean earth religion and magic, this will be a very confusing deck. First of all The New Orleans Voodoo Tarot, is not a real Tarot, in the sense of the word. This alone will confuse the Waite followers. Reason being the suits are not the typical coins, swords, cups, or clubs. Instead they are based on earth Magico Religions and Spirituality from the Caribbean. The Suits follow Rada, Congo and Petro, which are various Voodoo paths, and the fourth is Santeria, which has nothing to do with Voodoo, with the exception of some minor similarities.

The Major and Minor Arcana, one finds the ancient Lwa Gods of Voodoo, and the Orisha of Santeria. The book gives a simple explanation of each Lwa and Orisha, enough that those who understand these powerful Spirits will get the jest of the meanings of the cards. But for those who have no common knowledge of these Spirits, trust me you are going to get lost and frustrated.

The book does not give a good interpretation of the cards, and gives you only a few key words; this is done because most that follows the Orishas and the Lwas find the meanings of the cards from within. The tarot is used as a vehicle from which the voice of the conscious mind and the Spirits of ones Ancestors can manifest and be heard. So of course those who are used to buying a Deck of tarot that has a booklet with the meanings will be lost.

If you like this deck and the book is not that bad, as it gives basic rituals and sacrifices. But I recommend you also study more on the Lwa and the Orishas, because without that basic knowledge you will never get the full force of this deck. Also the Artist of this deck Sallie Ann Glassman has written a book that also goes with this deck Vodou Visions: An Encounter With Divine Mystery 0375753702, can also be purchased through Amazon.

The New Orleans Tarot is an excellent tool for divination, and would be good for the Voodooist "Hounfor / Mambo " As well as the Santero/as. But also the tarot collector will truly appreciate the primitive and vivid art, and those who have some interest in Afro-Magic will find this a good starting point. This deck is not really recommended to the fluff bunnies, and the faint of heart.
