Very decent book
I read and reread, this is very good in presenting concepts and illustrating through examples. Very interesting exercises. I am keeping this book for future reference. It could use some reorgnization of chapters. Seem like authors were not sure what concepts to present in what chapter as all of them were overlayed, perhaps justified in attempting to present the concept in understandble way

Start as a novice, end as an 'expert'
'The difference between profit and loss is the difference between costs and turnover' was a saying of my professor. But this book shows that there are lots of different calculations of those profits and loss. This book learns the reader step by step new ways to calculate the turnover and the costs, budgets, planning and presenting of the figures everyone is waiting for. Thanks to the exercises the basic calculations can be practiced and the cases present a first brief introduction what is going on in the real world, focusing on a special topic, but without removing the students freedom.

A beautiful epic, with an English Romantic spin
It is interesting that Wordsworth should never have published his most impressive poem. Norton calls it the "most original long poem since Milton's Paradise Lost," and it certainly deserves to be ranked alongside the master of the English epic. This poem was not published until after Wordsworth's death in 1850, and there are several versions of it (which are included in this book). The 1798-1799 version is very short, but the 1805 is expanded and includes many epic devices which Wordsworth borrowed from Milton and others. The 1850 version is basically a revised 1805 edition. It is not necessary that you read all three versions of the poem to understand its power, but it is useful to have them all at hand like this.

The Prelude is an autobiography about Wordsworth's early life. It is full of sublime images of the world through the eyes of a Romantic, and includes some of the most beautiful imagery ever set to verse in English (I believe). Wordsworth's reflections about the evils of ambition and self-absortion, among other things, are also very powerful.

This poem has been widely quoted by such Christian authors as CS Lewis, and has been admired by many great English poets. It is truly a masterpiece, an epic poem done in the tradition of English Romanticism. You can get this poem in many compilations, but usually in abridged form. This edition features the poem in its entirety, and in three version. This poem is essential to any study of English Romanticism.

five stars
This book articulates a vision of the world and of the emotions it inspires in a cerebral, yet densely imaged poem. Wordsworth did not want the poem published for fears that it was too self-absorbed; adressing earlier reviews that have made this complaint, it is true that the poem is self absorbed in that it presents the vision of the world from an individual perspective...as all poems do. I find Eliot's use of quotations and footnotes drawing on his banks of memory and reading to be far more self-absorbed than this: a poem intended to communicated clearly. It is true that it is personal in that it was written to a friend with devotion and love, but this does not detract from the power of the language, the power of the vision, and the impact of the poem upon the age(s). As for comparing Wordsworth to a modernist, that comparison is difficult to make as the modernists rejected the romantic's formal language and optimism (both present in the prelude, despite moments of recognition of a bleak 'wasted' world).

Wordsworth: Poet of Anxiety
I entirely disagree with the prevailing reviews on The Prelude. We have no other secular poem about the futile search for meaning in a meaningless world so fine as the Prelude: it is the Paradise Lost of those who search or long for a fleeting significance. What is significant about the poem is not that we believe what Wordsworth claims about the power of nature and the mind, but that he tried so hard to search out some sense of meaning and order- Wordsworth is the first Modernist writer before there was a name for his anxiety. This edition is wonderful in the way that it presents the 1805 and 1850 versions on opposite pages- it also contains the 1799 version- a real tour de force. Read The Prelude, read it carefully and take it too heart- there is no Song of Myself without Wordsworth's humane yet Promethean quest for significance.

A heavy reliance on secondary sources.
When I bought this book I had high expections. The cover photograph is awesome! The book however, turned out to be a disapointment. In terms of research, it's similar to an undergraduate paper. Williams uses very few primary sources, relying instead on the work of others. It's kind of a cut and past job. An examination of the citations will confirm this.
I was especially looking forward to a discussion of what many consider Adenauer's finest hour. His decision, despite intense opposition, to push for reparations for Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Williams barely mentions the reparations and dosn't even attempt to examine Adenaurer's motivations.
In terms of of giving an overview of Adenauer's life the book's ok. But this giant of the 20th Century deserves better.

Thoughtful biography on one of Germany's great leaders
This book is the biography of the great Konrad Adenauer, the long serving German Kanzeller charged with rebuilding a shattered Germany following WW2. His childhood, education, and involvement in the Köln government are all described in detail. He is shown in an honest light and at times comes across as egotistical, greedy, and unfaithful. But he was also very determined, highly competent, and utterly committed to seeing Germany reunited under a peaceful, democratic government.

Overall, the book is a worthwhile read but tended to be a bit dry and sometimes got bogged down in detail. The complex issues facing him after the war and how he dealt with them are really the most important parts of this book and I would have liked to have seen this covered in a bit more detail. For those looking for an informative and comprehensive history of Herr Adenauer, this should do.

Spiritual Grand Architect of German Phoenix
Charles Williams narrates with panache the life of stern and energetic Konrad Adenauer who came to the attention of the world well in the twilight of his life. Adenauer, staunch defender of the Catholic faith and strong German patriot, was born in a very modest family a few years after the proclamation of the Second Reich. After serving in the pre-war imperial bureaucracy, Adenauer gradually became the deserving, leading political figure in his native city of Cologne by the end of WWI. Adenauer assumed with cunning ability and efficiency the mayoralty of Cologne under the Weimar Republic before the Nazis obliged him to resign from his elected position in his late fifties. At that time, Adenauer himself thought that he was "kaput": he was a political liability in the eyes of the Nazis and close to financial bankruptcy. To his credit, Adenauer kept a low profile in Nazi Germany, put order in his finances with the help of (Jewish) friends and emerged with his political credentials relatively intact from the ruins of the Third Reich at the end of WWII. After neutralizing his political adversaries with ruthless efficiency and obstinacy, Adenauer was successively elected leader of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) and then first post-war Chancellor of former West Germany with the approval of the occupying allies. To the victors and German internal opposition, Adenauer quickly revealed himself as a tough negotiator who was very good at dividing his adversaries by exploiting their weaknesses, in order to progressively restore the sovereignty and dignity of his beloved fatherland under the leadership of the CDU. Furthermore, Adenauer progressively overcame his parochialism by taking a leading role in the reconstruction of a unified, prosperous Western Europe at peace with itself on an equal footing with such personalities as Robert Schuman, Jean Monnet, Alcide de Gasperi and Paul-Henri Spaak. Although Adenauer died in 1967, his political legacy must remain a source of inspiration to his successors. Germany, aware of its not always glorious past and its long time pro-European stance, is called to take over the leadership in the further construction of a democratic, prosperous, and strong Europe to the chagrin of especially one nation. The center of gravity of the European Union will be moving eastwards in the coming years after the integration of Middle-European and Eastern European Nations. Future German chancellors will play a key role in the undertaking of eventually turning the dream of a United States of Europe into a reality in partnership with the United States of America. Only a Europe speaking with one voice in economic, military, political and social matters will be systematically taken seriously by the other great powers of this world.

Suspenseful, frightening, and captivating!
In this novel, it is revealed that a young Columbo was one of the detectives who put Charles Manson behind bars. Now, he's back investigating the murder of a cheating wife and her lover. Her husband and his model lover were the murderers, who have cleverly framed one of his employees, a Manson girl once pregnant by Charles, with overwheliming evidence. As Columbo later comments, if they hadn't made so much evidence against her and left some work to do, they might have gotten away with it. Charles Manson himself appears in one chilling scene behind bars. Recomended to fans of Columbo, but a slight warning: Harrington added a few modern elements: sex (the pair are murdered in bed), language (seriously, it's a bit excessive!), and gore (described in detail the Manson murders and Khoury murders).

This book keeps you on edge as Columbo cracks the case.
This book is not quite as good as "The Hoover Files" but it is definetely worth getting. For all of the Columbo fans, this is a worthwhile book to purchase. It first takes you all the way back to the Tate-LaBianca murders and then jumps to the present when an astoundingly simlilar murder occurs, or at least made to look that way. The Murderer in the story has a perfect framing operation. Since one of his workers was one of the original Manson girls(who was not tried in that case), everyone will undoubtably suspect her; that is, everybody but one certain leiutenint.

Scared me s***less
This book was extremely mesmerizing. It was THE most twisted and terrifying book I've ever read, fiction or non-fiction. As long as your not squeamish, you will love it.

Far too easy
The book is far too easy for professionals and for university students. The blanks exercises are really stupid. If you are not experienced in mathematics or statistics you will probably like the book because there are no derivations of formules or demonstrations of theorems.

A Useful Book For My Work
The person I bought this book for found it very useful for his studies and the attached Cd-ROM very useful with its chapter reviews and tests.

An Excelent Book
Because of the deep grade themes are studied. Basic for student and professionals...

Not Biblically Sound
I thought that this would be an excellent book based on the previews that I reveiwed. However, after receiving the book, I ended up throwing it away in the trash. The categorizing of the gifts was difficult to understand (and I'm in Mensa). Also, the implications that prophecy is not for today and that speaking in unknown toungues is not for every believer is not based on sound biblical principles as I believe it and, moreover, as I have experienced it.

Concise, excellent study for laymen
I have referred to this book many times over the years. I have recommended it to many of my students and fellow classmates in Sunday School, my Bible Institute classes and Bible studies. It is excellent for laymen and answers many of the questions the average Christian has without being too technical.

The best single book on this vital subject.
An excellent, practical overview of the spiritual gifts that are available today. He contrasts the nature of the gifts to talents, the fruit of the Spirit, ministries etc. to put them in the clearest light. This has become our standard text in our course on spiritual gifts in the Twin Cities Bible Institute.

Ok! So You Like Illuminated Manuscripts.
This book is good, not great. Its to small and many of the illistrations are too small, and hard to see. But for the money its worth it. They have many other books that are a bit better than this one. Here is one that is very good 'Masterpieces of the J.Paul Getty Museum Illuminated Manuscripts'. This book is awesome with easy to read text and wonderful pictures. Happy Reading.

A wealth of good stuff in a small package
This is one of my favorite illumination books. Being a practicing illuminator, I need photos much more than I need lengthy discussions, historical analyses, elaborate provenance notes, etc. They have to be color photos and they have to be large enough, and at a high enough resolution, that I can learn something from them--and maybe even copy an initial, a diapering pattern, a bit of the border, or more.

This book satisfies all these criteria. In fact, the only thing I dislike about this book is the fact that it's so small, it's really hard to keep open while I paint from it. REALLY hard, because if you get large and heavy enough items to hold both sides down, inevitably the items obscure parts of the page you are painting from!

Its size can be an advantage, though. I purchased this at the National Gallery in Washington, on a midday jaunt during a conference, then went back for the next conference presentation. When the speaker turned out to be droningly boring, I brought out this tiny book and paged through it inconspicuously under the table. Could I have done that with Janet Backhouse's monumental work? I think not...;)

The selections are wonderful, and they're usefully broken down into sections based on content--excellent when you need to find a quick animal or floral image for a border, a rendering of a king or queen, or a picture of a dragon or other supernatural being. Not so excellent when you need to find an example of, say, a late 1400's eastern French book of hours (there are many, just not in any kind of chronological or geographical order). But then, there are other resources that do that. This book is interesting for its variety, its excellent reproductions, and its well-selected and unusual miniatures.

An Exemplar for the keen-eyed!
Excellent reproduction of a number of styles, with reasonable commentary. Very valuable for me as a newbie, to provide a sense of medieval style and composition. The size is at once very handy and very frustrating.

core knowledge
A classic, been out there for as long as our teachers can remember or more, why? cause it gives u the most important points in nearly every thing, it picks a flower from every different flowerbed. it wont expand much on the types of coils used for cerebral aneurysms for example, but will tell you what u need to know about the main title, how to diagnose and general principles of management. it is not for seniors who will most certainly find it deficient. It is a good choice for medical students and surgical residents in there very beginnings but not beyond. This edition has been printed in style, if u have ever passed over the previous ones u could realize the differences.
still though it needs more on managing trauma, and more details regarding laparoscopy. And probably a larger chapter on operative techniques in general. The images are generally good although some of them date back to really old editions.
It really depends on what u want from a book, thats all.

The classic
This book is very useful for both medical students and basic surgical residents alike. While the older editions tend to be tedious and frustrating due to the inconsistency in font size and style as well as formatting, newer editions are better. The pictures and illustrations are what made this a classic basic surgical textbook. It explains the fundamentals of basic surgery. It is a good launch pad to cover all aspects of surgery at a core level and allows the reader to head off and search for more specialized text in inspired topics.

One stop shop for medical students
This book attempts to be the one stop shop. It goes through from anatomy/physiology -> pathology -> diagnosis -> operative techniques -> postop management.

That is both it's good and bad point.

Good as it succeeds. Bad as it is not big enough to really finish off the job.

However, as a busy medical student looking for concise yet comprehensive treatment of ALL fields of surgery.....this is the book to get. Sabiston and the rest are all too big....unless of course you don't go out much and read it all night.

greatness
It was a pretty good book. It made me realize what life was like back in dickens' time. The industrial revolution was going on... It started off pretty slow than got exciting as I read on. I encourage young readers to think about reading this book.

A Glimpse Of Ordinary People During Industrial Revolution
Hard Times depicts the lives of ordinary people during the industrial revolution in England. Dickens brings several characters to life and weaves an interesting story about their interactions with each other. Most of these characters are poor and they live in a pollution ridden town where the economy is based on coal production. Dickens's description of their lives is excellent. The only reason for the four stars is that one or two secret matters are alluded to near the beginning, but they are never revealed, leaving the reader a little disappointed. Overall, Hard Times is very good book.

Hard Times is an exceptional book
Hard times lyrically explains life in the early 1800's while captivating its readers and showing that hard times hits people of all eras, decades, and even surpasses those of 1800's to the 1990's. However, what is most intriguing is the fact that Charles Dickens in some aspects suggest that sometimes hard times are circumstances that we subject ourselves and others to and whether is under ones own volition or under false pretenses. Hard Times is indeed a knowledgeable novel that teaches a lesson and shows one of many Dickens attributes. This review is from Merci McKinley who is 16 years old from Potomac High School in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

DANFORTH'S OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY, 8TH
This book is not like an ordinary medical textbook. It is more like an intermediate type between a medical text and a medical periodical. It gives considerable space to progresses of many medical-scientific research and the names of their authors. While on the other hand, it provides extremely concise outlines of etiology-manifestation-diagnosis-treatment for many common diseases, sometimes even skip certain important topics. As far as I am aware of , the following common topics are not or barely mentioned by this book: physiological changes of pregnant women; rubella infection during pregnancy; breast feeding of mothers with mastitis; the route and rate of mother-child transmission of HIV; the differential diagnosis of ruptured ectopic pregnancy; contraindications of the use of IUD; forceps use in labor; APGAR; There are also quite a few mistakes in the rear index.

Excellent core text for Residents
Very good O&G text. This updated edition is well done
