A Provocative look
I was first introduced to "The Protectorate and the Northumberland Conspiracy" through assigned reading in a history course I took in college. Most students agree that assigned reading is typically laborious - not pleasurable and fascinating. This book, however, captured my interest immediately. Professor Brown went to great lengths to detail all the characters and their motivations involved in the power struggle of the Tudor throne. For anyone interested in monarchal legitimacy, religious controversies, power plays, politics, and yes-even sex scandals, this book satisfies in style! I especially like that the author did not dumb down the prose to a basal vernacular, as is common in the literature of our time. Even amongst the opulence of the past, no era is without its controversy, hypocrisy, and turmoil. The six years this book illustrates is packed with drama the likes only seen in Hollywood. Typically, only Henry VIII, Mary, and Elizabeth I are treated as worthy subjects of in depth study. But, Professor Brown has carefully shown that the years in between merit the same attention. As such, "The Protectorate and Northumberland Conspiracy" inspired me to learn more about all of the Tudors legends. I also was able to incorporate the knowledge I acquired through the study of this book in an interview I had at Cambridge University in England!

I recommend this book to everyone!
John Brown, a Scottish physician, wrote this moving story in 1858. In it, Brown harks back to his childhood, and his first meeting of the great mastiff Rab. They maintain their friendship for some six years, until Rab's owner, James Noble, brings his wife to the medical school where Brown is studying. Ailie Noble is suffering from breast cancer, and the Surgeon-Master of the school decides to operate. It is 1830, a time before anesthetics and antibiotics.

I don't normally say such things, but I do not believe that it is possible to read this heart-rending story with dry eyes. Dr. John Brown is mainly remembered for this slim book, and it is easy to see why it has survived. The author wrote a book that is highly informative about that earlier and more primitive time, and is also touching at the very core of humanity. This is a wonderful book, one that is often recommended to dog-lovers, and one that I recommend to everyone!

Lays out the basics
This is a great text for laying out the basics of what the WTO actually means for environmental problem-solving in global politics. The introduction is clear cut and accessible. The intros to each of the separate case studies: tobacco control; the reformulated gasoline case; the beef hormones case; the shrimp-turtle case; and a hypothetical GMO case are concise and readable. The bibliographies are invaluable. As in all anthologies, some of the individual chapters are uneven. Wish I could afford this book!

Practical and Prayerful
The last book published by Raymond E Brown prior to his death, it combines serious scholarship and prayerful reflection on the author of the Fourth gospel. The reader gets the feeling that Brown knew the "beloved disciple" on a personal basis. Many of the insights he shares about the community of the beloved disciple and the significance of the Fourth Gospel are profound and deeply moving. A book that is a real page turner.

Rogues' Bluff is a blast!
I was trapped by the opening line and enjoyed every minute of this book. Think of an updated Dashiell Hammett. This is my first John Brown book and I will be continuing on to his other works (I actually met John while in Indianapolis for the 500 and he signed my copy of Rogues' Bluff). This work has the hard-boiled colorful imagery of the classic detective genre, many sub-plots that unfold as you go, a great sense of humor, and an excellent overall story that hits all colors of the literary spectrum. This book was recommended to me as a good intro to detective Richard Scott. A must have for detective/mystery fans and a good read for anyone who enjoys a good book.

Excellent Study of Social Science & the Brown Decision
Jackson does an excellent job of uncovering the critical role that social scientific research played in the Supreme Court's classic Brown vs. Board of Education decision in 1954. While many people equate the Brown decision with Clark's classic doll studies, Jackson provides an extremely even-handed look at role that Clark played in the decision, as well as pointing out the numerous studies carried out by other scholars that influenced the Supreme Court. An excellent read for anyone who is interested in this classic decision.

Covenantal System of Theology
Brown's Systematic Theology is organized around the doctrine of the covenant, which few (if any) modern systematics emulate. Brown surpasses, in my estimation, the work of Reymond, Berkhof, and Hoeksema, though (may it be said) he lived in a different era with different conflicts. Still, Brown's systematics, based on his seminary lectures, should be read and re-read by modern theologians and laymen; after all, how many systematics end each section with words such as: "Now, O my soul, think what astonishing displays of Jehovah's perfections appear in this covenant!" Buy it, read it, live it.

The Book of Mormon Investigated Fairly
The trouble with apologetic works is in the nature of what causes them: argument and criticism. Few people write apologetically about issues or ideas that are not already often hotly disputed. The pleasant aspect of this book is that, for the most part, it reminds that because the Book of Mormon is an actual text, it can also be treated objectively, whatever one believes about the ideas or issues that surround its origin and purposes.

Many of the writers here -- whose articles are drawn from the somewhat monumental academic undertaking, The Encyclopedia of Mormonism -- allow the Book of Mormon to speak for itself. Therefore, we can see what the Book of Mormon appears to be when it is taken on face value that it is what it says it is: a text containing selected writings of an ancient people who were removed from the Near East and arrived and developed a multi-faceted cultural milieu in the Americas.

In this way, 'Mormons' and non-'Mormons' alike are able to determine whether the Book of Mormon has the kind of internal consistency that could make its self-contained assertions credible. This might not be the way that 'Mormons' want us to "test" their sacred literature, but it certainly bows to the scientific objectivity of contemporary academic standards.

In so doing, the book also proves that 'Mormon' scholars are genuine scholars and capable of participating in a broader academic field (as many of the contributors to this volume regularly do).
