Wesh stick chairs
John Brown gives an excellent introduction on the history of Welsh stick chairs. He also expounds at length on the merits of handcrafed versus machine made products, and gives credit to past practioners in the art of making stick chairs. The book falls short on detailed explanations of making a stick chair. For that one should read Drew Langsner's The Chairmaker's Workshop. The two complement one another. Ernie Kleinman. Kleinman Guitars and Violins
Inspirational!
John Brown happened upon The Welsh Stick Chair by chance; perhaps divine chance. The book is a true inspiration. General dimensions are given in the text but more detailed info can be gotten by using Drew Langsner's " The Chairmaker's Workshop". This book should be looked at as importantly as detailed plans but enjoyed from a romantic view point. I recommend this book to all woodworkers.

A Mirror to his times
When Robert E. Sherwood died, in 1955, his fame was almost mythical: a Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatist whose ROOSEVELT AND HOPKINS: AN INTIMATE HISTORY won his a fourth Pulitzer Prise; FDR's speechwriter and intimate advisor; Overseas Director of the OWI. We first meet Sherwood in the midst of his gifted, gay and delightful family. Later, after service in the Canadian Black Watch during World War I, he came to New York, worked on VANITY FAIR with Robert Benchley and Dorothy Parker and was a member of the Algonquin's Round Table. He went on to prove himself an outstanding dramatist with REUNION IN VIENNA and ABE LINCOLN IN ILLINOIS, among other plays.
This is, as John Gunther says, "A brilliantly readable and rewarding book. It is not merely a biography of the fabulous Sherwood, but of the fabulous times he lived in. Beautifully written, lucid, witty, and a thoroughly good job."

.....not just for the birds..
"Audubon: American Birds" is a not only a wonderful introduction to Audubon's works but a portrait of the birds as seen through the eyes of a great American naturalist. The volume also serves as a good reference source though tempered with an romantic view giving the astute reader an additional insight into the times in which Audubon worked. I would definately recomment this book to both the birder and art lover.

The best available resource on American HO Scale brass
The purpose of this book is to provide a catalog of all HOScale brassmodel locomotives imported into the United States through about 1992. The second purpose is to provide technical and price information to perspective buyers or evaluators of "preowned" brass. Mr. Glaab does an excellent job with the first function. The book is divided into locomotive types (steam, rod, geeared, narrow-gauge, diesels, gas-electrics and electrics). Within each catagory the models are broken down by railroad (AT&SF, B&O) and then by (wheel)class. I found very few models which were not listed in this book, and they were rare examples, handbuilt in Japan in the early days of brass modeling (1950s). Photographs are supplied of some of the models, drawn from Glaab's own private collection or those of his collector colleagues. The B&W photographic quality varies from fair to good. The book lists many thousands of models and provides an excellent overview of the productivity of this little known industry. It deals only with the locomotive models of Canada and the United States. It is unfortunate that it could not have been extended to the topic of brass rolling stock as well, but this would have almost doubled the size of the volume. Concerning the commentary on individual models. It is obvious the Mr. Glaab could not see or evaluate every single one of the thousands of models produced by some 40 importers since the early 1950s. However, he makes a valiant effort. Comments are grouped into 1,954 notes appendixed to the book. Although this establishes a somewhat awkward procedure for acquiring the necessary information, and although the notes are extremely brief and necessarily incomplete, they do provide useful information.Concerning the pricing of the models, one must use the information with considerable care. Mr. Glaab runs a large model train store (Peach Creek Shops) and has considerable information on the prices of models. However, the price structure has changed significantly since this book was written, particularly for many of the rarer handbuilt models of the 1950s. Theoretically, the prices were established on the basis of two or more known sales in the years prior to publication (he contacted me for some of this information). However, I note considerable disparities in the prices of many of the rarer models from pricing information known to me. For example, a rare model he listed at $8,000 recently sold at auction for $14,000+. Some even rarer models are markedly undervalued. With these considerations in mind, one might use this book as a beginning point (only) for the evaluation of a collection of model trains. All in all, this book is not only an excellent organizational effort, but represents the very best source available on the subject. Some useful appendixes include lists of importers, builders, the Whyte Wheel Classification for steam locomotives (Atlantic 4-4-2, etc.), and a useful bibliography. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of American brass models.

Baja Butterflies-Finally some good information
Thsi book is vaulable to anyone who has an interest in Leps. No other book covers the Baja California area, and because of the many species that cross the border, it is also a good form of information for Southern California lep people.

A revolutionary lady with spunk!
Caty was the young wife of Gen. Nathanael Greene. Not content to stay home with the children, she joined her husband in winter quarters at Monmouth NJ (where she gave birth to one of their sons) and Valley Forge PA. The author wrote this biography based on their letters.

Pretty good educational book
My three year old daughter and I had been observing pelicans on our daily walks. I told her I'd find her a book on them so we could learn more about them. I found this one and bought it. She really enjoys it and while much of the tone of it is above the head of a three year old, she still gets a lot out of it and it will -- likely -- have longevity as she gets older and understands more about it.

One of the few good (Just For Mac) FoxPro Books...
Until I found this book, I was using FoxPro books written for the PC to create my applications. This book does an excellent job of tayloring the FoxPro language to take advantage of the unique Macintosh user interface while still supporting cross-platform development on the PC as well. I found the section on multi-user access especially usefull. It is slightly out-of-date now since Visual FoxPro is now available for the Macintosh. Unfortunately, I have not found a Visual FoxPro book that meets the needs of the Macintosh community like "Hacking FoxPro".

a slighly biased approach to John Brown
the essays contained within Finkelman's books are well written and well argued, just watch out because they contain an anti-Brown slant. These works are far from impartial and for a history text, some of them don't follow the traditional road to research of primary source, secondary, and so and so forth. The text is excellent if are looking to read good essays, but they are not impartial.

Excellent book - But it could use a "cosmetic" update
Good subject coverage, knowledgeable author, and plenty of uncluttered figures makes this book very worthwhile. The only thing missing from this excellent book is an update. Although this is the third edition (1998), almost all of the equipment photographs are from the early-to-mid 1970's. An extensive and broad Suggested Reading section follows most chapters but again far far too many references are to early 1970's books and manuals. An update could earn this book a 5+ rating.
