A let down
I am an avid Dale Brown fan. I was excited to read Dreamland Nerve center. I was quite disappointed. I am not sure how much input Mr. Brown had on this project but it would be better if he took his name off of it. It was stale, predicatble and very cheesy. I think the characters are good but the only person who would actually enjoy reading this is a female highschool wall flower. It should be displayed in the cheap romance novel catagory. The next book in the Dreamland series can be nothing but better than this one. I will give Dreamland another chance because I like Mr. Brown. But, that being said, I can only take so much cheap romance.
Excitement continues
Great second installment in the series. Brown revisits ANTARES, the mind/machine interface (see Cheetah) with some new twists.

This book put me on the path to creating great web sites.
It bothers me to no end to read the negative reviews of this book. Maybe it's because the book is labeled from "casual" to "expert" user. I knew absolutely nothing about web publishing and HTML coding and found this extremely easy to read and follow. Unfortunately there were probably a few people in the "advanced" bracket who needed to slam this book because it did not cover what they expected. It gave me a solid basis for HTML and Dynamic HTML coding and was a great introduction to Java and CGI. When an author has to cover so many subjects related to HTML he's bound to skim over the more advanced applications. Being almost 1000 pages, it does a sterling job. By the way, the CD has a great HTML editor on it!
great overview of diverse HTML topcis
As a beginner I found the book a tremendous resource into HTML and Web page authoring. I do not believe the book is intended to be an exhaustive reference on every topic but wants to focus on normal day to day concerns. After reading the book I now feel extremely comfortable on all Web issues and recommend the text highly.
Really great, especially for beginners
Easy and fun to read and learn basics of HTML and well beyond. Logically organized so it works well both for self-instruction and as a reference.

Out of date
I've played mage for a few years now, before third edition graced the shelves, and I found that this book was not terribly helpful. While it had several high points, the extra skills included on a whole could be gained by taking a specialty in an already listed skill. The merit and flaw section was interesting, with the publication of revised and third edition, it's no longer needed. The expanded tradition sections, were helpful, but sense the publication of third edition, they are no longer up to date and to be honest, if you want to know about traditions The Traditions Gathered set of books is a far better resource. While The Book of shadows is an interesting read, it's definitely not a required resource for mage.
A good oldie showing it's age
This is a good book which has a lot of information to make your character richer (merits and flaws, extra skills, more detailed information on each Tradition, the Technocracy and others, etc.). However, most of the sections in this book are beginning to show their age, as the information presented here has been revised and updated to much more practical information in several other Mage books. The section with the parables, though, is still one of my favorite Mage reads.
More useful than great
The book of shadows, which was written between the publishing of the 1st and second editions of Mage, is at this point slightly "behind the times," especially what with the release of Mage 3rd edition. Somewhere between irrelevant and necessary. Has some good basic material on the various Mage fringes, as well as a lot of expanded stuff for character creation.

Very good Introduction to Intranet Concept
I found this book very easy to read, and completely understandable, its emphasis on the "User Point of View" is remarkable, it is well structured and concrete; the section: "Bottom line" at the end of every chapter is very helpful. The cons is that it touches very briefly technical aspects of the Intranet.
A great guide reference guide, worthy of multiple readings
Thanks to this book, I finally appreciate some of the differences between the Internet and an intranet in terms of corporate communications policies, screen design, infrastructure, project management and security requirements. As a layman, the technical glossary has been helpful to me in my current job and projects and I refer to it several times a week. Good insight on the people side (politics, etc.) of corporate intranet projects. My thanks to the authors.
A hard to please engineer
Excellent! Finally a useful (and enjoyable) text on intranet style that is clear and packed with required information on making a killer intranet from scratch. In my field, I deal with professionals that have all sorts of cyber experience, and using The Elements of Intranet Style I can speak intranet to the expert as well as the novice. Big pluses include the "Must know's and Must no's" section that warns of copyright pitfalls and security issues headaches. Overall this book is an excellent, low cost bible dedicated to the rapidly growing intranet. A must!

Not a textbook for the beginner but still good to learn from
I bought this book to learn something about the subject, and I did learn quite a bit.The potential buyer should read the subtitle closely and be aware that this is not a how to book for the first time beer brewer, you'll have to go elsewhere for detailed brewing information. This book does give a lot of history and information, good book to have if you're thinking of brewing your own Brown Ale, or just think you might want to drink the stuff.

Start some place else
HTML 3.2 Starter Kit is not a starting place. It does discuss the origin of HTML and gives simple examples but fails to include some basic elements like a reference to HTML tags. There is no place to find the standard form or how to use some elements. The index doesnt even seem to include all the tags. The book also uses some tags before introducing them in the text. They start giving examples of things that show up in later chapters. The explanation of colors and their use in backgrounds is unintelligible. The book comes with a CD with some HTML editors. These are shareware which will expire after a time period or number of uses. One is supposed to have a 30 day evaluation period but by the time they got it to the CD it has 14 days left.
I am not a professional programer but I have taken courses in programing in Fortran,Pascal and C. HTML is quite simple but trying to learn it from this book will make it more difficult.
J. Claiborn Ph.D.
A good starter book for most HTML commands and samples.
I started out with Que's HTML 3.2 Starter Kit. It lived up to it's name and had most common HTML commands with general descriptions and browser tips. I highly recommend it for "starting out" because it's written in layman's language with good examples and screen shots.

Quick Course/Microsoft Publisher 2000 - Don't bet on it
A word of warning to those who believe the title - the authors claim it is for the 2000 version of Publisher, but many of the screens and keystrokes they portray are of an earlier version. After struggling through several pages of the intro, they thoughtfully threw in a text box on page 10, to explain that the book is based on the '98 version of the program and that "the appearance of your screen might not match ours..." Terrific. If you are a veteran of Publisher, this might not be a problem, but if you bought this thing thinking it would lead you through the 2000 edition of the program, you are left to wander through it, and getting stuck on a page with no way to go back without losing what you already have done. If you are a rookie on learning this program, don't expect this book to be your guide. Take a class instead or keep looking for a better tutorial.
Excellent Intro Tutorial
Excellent step-by-step presentation of the basics of Microsoft Publisher. While not pretending to be a complete course, this six chapter text takes starts with basic concepts and then walks you through creating various publications for the fictional "Adventure Works" tour company.
