more than given history
excellently written with a first person point of view. Gives accout of these 3 young boys lives pre-civil war to the last. Greatly shows honor and pride of Texans, and chivarly of those days. Good history of how this war involved more than the white and negros for which most people really learned about it. Brings forth the great allies of indians both for the north and the south, most forgotten by history books. Would make a great movie or tv mini-series

Billy J. Brown must have been there!
When I read B.J.'s book, I had the overwhelming feeling that he had been there every step of the way with Will, Cicero, and J.D.. He tells their story with such feeling and respect that brings honor to the memory of these American heros. I live in Natchitoches, Louisiana and know B.J. as a friend and neighbor. I am proud of the way he portrays the Southern pride and heritage that is still alive today in the hearts of so many. His book is more than a story, it is a history lesson that goes beyond the story told in school. He brings it to life as he gives us a glimps of the hardships these men faced as they fought for their family and their homeland, remaining dedicated to the cause to the bitter end. This is one of the best books I have ever read and I recommend it highly. I hope we see B.J.'s story come to life on the screen soon.

GREAT STORY
LOVE THE BOOK I THOUGHT IT WAS A GREAT STORY WRITTEN FROM THE HEART I FEEL IT WOULD MAKE A GREAT MOVIE

The NFL's 100 all-time best
This book is loads of fun to the NFL enthusiast. All eras of the NFL are included (from the 1930's to the present day) as well as all positions (except kickers and punters -- I guess none of them were among the top 100 players). Each entry gets a full two pages -- one a beautiful full-color picture and one a page-long description of that player's special talents and accomplishments. Each player also gets a "Top 10 list" -- a list by a colleague or coach of the best players, most intense players, smartest players, etc. -- including that individual.

The selection and ranking of players was as unbiased as possible. The editors began with 300 names, which they then reduced to 100, and from which each selected his top ten players, without ranking them. After tabulating the results, the editors then ranked the top 10. Then the voters selected their next 15 players, compared notes, and ranked numbers 11-25. They did this with 26-50, 51-75, and 76-100. Is the book still subjective? Undoubtably. You can't objectively compare linemen to running backs to receivers to quarterbacks and objectively identify the overall best players. But the editors did their best to be objective.

The top 10, in order from #1, are Jim Brown, Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Lawrence Taylor, Johnny Unitas, Don Hutson, Otto Graham, Walter Payton, Dick Butkus, and Bob Lilly. I would give this book 5 stars, except that John Elway only comes in at #16, which IMHO is about 15 slots too low (but that shows you where I grew up :-) (Also, Bronco fans should be sure to look on the last 2 pages for an extra special treat.)

All in all, this is a fun book about some great football players. Whether or not you agree with the rankings, you gotta admit: all of the top 100 were/are great players!

Great Picks!
How do you go about picking the greatest 100 football players of all time? There are going to be agreements about who should be on it, and lots of disagreements about who should or shouldn't be on it. This book tackles an extremely difficult job and comes out a winner. Whether or not you agree with all the choices here, you have to admit they picked some damn good ones.

Each page contains pics and a bio on the player. They list Jim Brown as number 1. Funny how just the other night I was in a local sports bar, and a man sitting next to me said "Jim Brown was the greatest player I ever saw." Obviously, this book agrees with my "friend." In fact, the book's forword is written by Brown.

In addition to TSN's Top 100 players listed in numercial order, there's also a "timeline" of when these players were active. Also listed are TSN's all-decade teams. Leafing through the pages brought back memories of players I have watched and enjoyed, and of players whose exploits I only read about years after their careers ended.

So do you agree with all the choices in this book? The only way to find out is to buy it and judge for yourself. I guarantee it's well worth the money.

Great Book
I Enjoyed this Book but Lists aren't Important.Cuz you can never say who would rule any given Time Period.I think all People Selected are Winners.of Course their are some who didn't make the list and therefor they should be acknowledged as well.

the life and death adventures in golf
Survival Rule #1 Watch Where You're Driving and that doesn't just mean at the tee off! Like all the Worst-Case Scenario Books in the series, this one has the familiar, easy to read layout with step-by-step instructions that are brief but informative. Nice how this sport edition gives a few words of advice on playing the game and explains how the official rules of golf apply in the unique situations, plus highlights a few guidelines to keeping good golf etiquette, which is all helpful for preventing confusion and heated debate among players.

The topic is divided into just a few chapters called: Bad Lies, Equipment Disasters, Dangerous Animals and Golfing Emergencies. The scenarios covered range from how to retrieve a ball lost in the ball washer, retrieve a ball from a gopher hole, how to keep score without a pencil, how to spot a cheat, disarm an irate golfer, start a dead cart, stop a runaway cart or free a cart from a sand trap. How to prevent a club from flying out of your hand and how to retrieve a golf club or golf ball lodged in a tree [they recommend wearing a hard hat to protect your head during this operation, imagine that!]. How to drive with a putter or putt with a driver, how to survive if you run out of tees, how to treat a sprained ankle, a blister, poison ivy, sunburn, heatstroke or dehydration. How to deal with a brush fire, alligator, snake, rabid animal or an attack by birds, not to mention how to deal with a fashion emergency or recognize a golf addiction. There is even a little over view on gambling bets and some translation of golfspeak. Also advice is included for avoiding lighting strikes and tornados while you're outside in open areas.

This book is a riot and the illustrations are great, they add so much and they truly are hilarious. A golfer at any level or interest will love it and even those who make fun of the sport and hate it, might find the book enjoyable too. It has an answer for nearly every golfer's nightmare, giving tips for surviving a life and death situation that probably will just end up being all par for the course.

Golfer's first aid (and second, and third...)
This is THE present for someone in your neighbourhood that's always boasting about his (or her) golf relations... Seen the beautiful greeeeeen cover? Me too...

Great pick
I picked this book up for my parents as an afterthought and a joke (one avid golfer for life, mother just picking it up) and they LOVED it! Both sat down and read it straight through, laughing out loud and enjoying it. Now I wish I had saved it for the holidays!

Good 'working cowboy' story, made a great movie
This story about a not-too-bright cowpoke who's left holding the feedbill for a load of horses with 'social disease' is a classic. His solution is to bust his butt and make enough money to break even, and therein lies the tale. They made a great 'unknown' movie called 'Pocket Money' based on the Novel, it starred Paul Newman and Lee Marvin and it's worth tracking down. Read the book if you can find it, or enjoy the movie, it's for sale here at Amazon.

Jim Kane's bittersweet business adventures in Mexico.
This book should be mandatory reading for everyone living on the southwest border! Arizonan Jim Kane ventures into Mexico to capitalize on what he knows and does best, buying and selling cattle. His adventures will make you at once laugh, then cry. Kane's cattle deals throughout northern Mexico, which always appear so simple and promising, are complicated by the shadowy complexity of Mexican commerce. Every man of power in every town, large or small, has an angle to ensure his palm is greased to allow the passage of cattle. Kane fights to overcome stifling odds and Mexican greed. Author J.P.S. Brown masterfully illustrates the Mexican enigma; just when you believe no goodness exists south of the border, Brown introduces you to the warmth that is purely Mexican. Kane is possessed of the wile and guile to give him a fighting chance. A chapter entitled "The Husbandman" pays homage to the love of an old Mexican for his land and his animals. As a native Arizonan, a descendent of southern Arizona pioneer ranchers and an avid reader, I rate J.P.S. Brown and Jim Kane a solid 5 stars!

may not be a helpful review, but...
My first time writing a review online,on a book which i never read...(this is what you call INTEGRITY=) )
Quite surprised to see my friend's review above. Thought he would hardly waste his precious time singing songs for some books. All along trust his taste, so guess this should be a not bad one that deserves a closer look, especially if you are a fan of Shania. Me myself not a soooo big fan, but do appreciate her music.Am loyal to Jacqueline du Pre, the great British cellist. Read most of her biographies, and was greatly inspired by them. So by Mathematical induction, if you love Shania, why not try the book...'Cause you never know how great an impact it may have on your life, just as those of du Pre have influenced mine.<

Shania Twain rules once against
I never knew much about country diva Shania Twain's life story until after reading Jim Brown's Shania Twain : Still The One. Shania is indeed an aspiration for all of us to persevere in order to succeed in life. Written in easily readable English, this book focuses on the delectable diva's early years and her phenomenal success up to present day.

The life of Shania Twain is a Cinderella story plucked from a country song. It indeed took true grit for this sultry songbird to rise from a hardscrabble childhood to megastardom. I couldn't put this book down once I laid hands on it. A must have books for all fans of Shania. Even if your are not, read this and I won't be surprised that you will become an instant fan!

A good activity book for teaching fundamentals to 1-8 pupils
This book is useful to teach people the fundamentals of the game without the aid of video or trained personnel. I've read many books on the subject and found very few printed resources that can communicate as effectively as this book. The chapters are well-organized, pertinent, and clear.

I haven't seen my copy of the book in 3 years, as a co-worker I loaned it to refuses to return it. My recollection is that the chapters take the reader, or more appropriately the coach/instructor, through the steps to accomplish each outlined task. The introduction/overview, demonstration, drills, and review of each topic is handled quite well. I've been an accomplished player for 29 years and a teaching professional for the last 21 and I learned some helpful drills that are very appropriate for most levels of players. I use this guide as a training manual for my newest assistants. Additionally, I place copies of lessons at each court for a circuit-type, self-learning/drilling workout for many of my teenage intermediate/advanced player workouts. The drills are easy to follow.

While I don't advocate all of the drills, I'm impressed by the layout of the learning structure created. I recommend this reference book for virtually all instructors. I believe many learning individuals would benefit from reviewing the contents, as they could easily follow the steps.

Provides a solid foundations of basic skills
It is hard to learn a game like tennis from a book but this book does the best job on communicating the basic skills and concepts. Jim Brown helps new players develop confidence through the well written instructions. When a family member wanted to learn about tennis, this is the book I had them read.

Good for first timers
This book provided help to many of my friends and family who are new to computers, especially Outlook. However, this particular Quick Course book was limited to the most basic and some intermediate levels of Outlook.

First book I have finished for Outlook 2000
Easy to read, great examples, and covers alot of detail in a relatively short period of time. Highly recommended! First Outlook 2000 book that I finished reading. Most others are tailored for people using Exchange. This one tells you to skip the following if you don't have Exchange.

Very Useful
I picked up this book "on sale" thinking it would eventually be useful. It turned out I needed it almost immediately to prepare some high-priority training presentations.

I'd used PowerPoint before to do some presentations for school but hadn't used any of the really cool useful features because I didn't know they existed. The importance of this work-related project motivated me to sit down and work through the entire book. I was impressed with how fast it moves from one useful topic to the next. It took me two days (part-time) to get all the way through the book but an inspired reader could do it in a day. By the end of the book I'd learned enough to complete the training presentation project very successfully.

I typically hate application instruction books because they are usually so patronizing. But this one is definitely useful and easy to read. I'm now interested in checking out more titles in Microsoft's "Quick Course" book series.

Interesting!
This book is interesting to read! It contains many insightful tips that can be useful not only to other managers. I would say that most of the contributing managers are well worth reading, but in a collection like this one some are of course better than others. All the business leaders have been choosen in a careful evaluation-process to find the best of the best. This process is also described in the book. After the recent developments in the US Economy, it can also be interesting to get the book from the bookshelf, like I did, and read what managers like Ken Lay (Enron), Bernie Ebbers (Worldcom) and Dennis Kozlowski (Tyco) have got to say.

Each chapter, somewhere between 10 and 20 pages, includes the managers career in short along with the key facts about the company they lead. I found it interesting to read about people who have made to the top, and these kind of publications normally includes information you won't find elsewhere. This book is no exception. It is also a book that you can read when you have a few minutes over since the chapters are so short, it is also easy to pick out the managers that find most interesting an concentrate on them.

"Lessons from the Top" 50 leaders works for me!
I have read a lot of business books about leadership. While most of them have been interesting, they have also been a little dry because the references to real people have only been used by way of example. Therefore, I liked this book because it allowed me to spend a liitle time with 50 people that one has to respect and acknowledge for their accomplishments. They have had to do something right in order to achieve what they have. But, then the book takes these 50 real life experiences and distills it down into a framework and a few basic lessons that helps all these individual experiences make sense within the larger scheme of things. People might say that there is nothing new here, only common sense notions, yet until one sees things within a larger picture or framework that ties things together, these are just disjointed ideas with little context, synergy or power to change. I can apply these lessons for the top to my own life situation and career and that makes the book work for me.

A great window into leadership of Americas Industry Titans.
I have seen an early edition of "Lessons From the Top". Remarkably, "Lessons From the Top" brings America's Corporate Board Room to the rest of America. As a former Assistant Corporate Secretary for what was at the time, America's largest outside Board of Directors, I had the unique opportunity to participate in strategy sessions and become acquanted with captains of US business.

Now, I am happy to say, the rest of America is provided this special opportunity with a glimpse into some of the country's finest corporate leaders. "Lessons from the Top" takes a look at what makes these 50 industry leaders tick and how their actions and skills have contributed to their leadership success.

The access afforded these authors is impressive, as is the statistical selection process utilized to select the participants.

The book is clearly organized and valuable lessons may be learned as we take this book with us on our business travels.

I recommend it for everyone who is interested further insights into leadership skills for work and extra-curricular activities.

Another point of view...
Sorry, but I have to disagree with the reviews so far. I my opinion this is the worst book from QUE-Books I have ever read (most of the QUE-books are really good). The author never explains the essential details about HTML, he always strays into simple, unneccessary details or into complicated, unneccessary details, but never gets to the point what is really useful. And if there's the rare occasion something is really explained, it will be repeated at least five times... I don't want to say the author doesn't know what he is writting about, he simply just don't know how to write...

Greg's Wonderful World of Really Boring Stuff
I just have to say this is the greatest book ever written. Why? Because it's MY web site that is featured in Chapter 3, Fig 3.12! It's under the heading of "The Wrong Stuff: What Not to Put on the Web"

I never got any royalty money out of the deal either, whats up with that? Can I sue for defamation of web site? Hmmm... probably not, but since it's the first site I ever made back when I was a freshman in Highschool, and now it's immortalized in print - I forgive him.

Greatest book ever written!

In depth and great examples for starters!
This book was great
