Disappointing, discouraging, and mildly offensive
The author needs to determine who his audience is. The book seems to be aimed at young people seeking to achieve and maintain 'super mind power'. The title (anti-aging) appeals to those of us who are experiencing 'brain fog' and want it to stop. While the tests will confirm or rebut our suspicions that something is wrong, the author suggests only the same-old home remedies - diet, vitamins and herbs, destress - that I have been using for years already. The mental excersizes are a bad joke - things I used to love doing when my mind was functional are now proposed as excersizes - which I couldn't do if my life depended upon it. There is nothing suggested in the way of medical treatment or what to tell a doctor to convince them that 'something is wrong'. Many things I have read about, found to be helpful and consider somewhat more cutting-edge - like oxygen therapy or the debate regarding the danger in dental fillings - are not even mentioned. Human growth hormone is dismissed in one sentance. If I believed this book, I would give up all hope.

A good reference book on the subject
The book quality is somewhat erratic from chapter to chapter. But, there is a lot of valuable information in it. This is especially true regarding all the micro nutrients, vitamins, herbal supplements that are good to maintain your cognitive skills. Through the years I find myself referring to this book very often. Although the book was written a few years ago, it appears very current.

Fellow physician/"brain-author" agrees with premise of this.
As more and more research suggests, there are ways that, by altering your lifestyle and intake, as well as your basic brain activity, you can possibly curtail what we traditionally think of as an "inevitable" aging process of the brain and its function. Dr. Goldman reviews many of these tools available, a number of which in fact, (despite other reviewer comments to the contrary), DO have peer-reviewed scientific studies to back them up. May I suggest "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain" as a companion guide to Goldman's book to provide another perspective on how you can affect brain aging, and for a more general view of brain optimization right now, before aging...My congratulations to Dr. Goldman and colleagues on a book well done and easy to read!...All the best...Kenneth Giuffre'MD, author, "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain"

A view of head injury from the fringe
This book presents a rather slanted view of mild head impact, and presupposes many things as fact that are not supported by the scientific literature. This is particularly borne out by the chapter on scientific issues that firmly refutes the unusual thinking presented in the other chapters.

A Who's Who in neuropsychology discusses mild TBI.
The reader may be taken by surprise that so many of the chapter authors are "elite" clinical neuropsychologists who have not previously been known to "believe in" mild TBI. They offer a wealth of information, questions and referencs. The text in most chapters is refreshingly free of test bound restrictions on inference or the usual lame rationales for discarding all mild TBI because the majority are OK. The book is a must for working clinicians in neuropsychology, neurology and psychiatry.

Well done and comprehensive review of many topics on MTBI
This work covers mild TBI as though it were real (which it probably is) in an informative and clinically hepful manner. The 23 chapters cover a very wide range of topics and are consistently excellent (if occasioally quirky). There is nothing else available at all on this topic, so it is easy to say it is the best. It is excellent in design and content.

Bill, the Galactic Hero on the Planet of Bottled Brains

Read the first, Bill the Galactic Hero; skip this one
I read the first one about 6 months ago. A all-round good time, one mishap after another, the first book you wanted to see want would happen next, BUT this one! Jumps from one story line to another, with unbelievable plots, I know that it is Science Fiction but the authors could at lest try to make it believable. I felt it was three or even four books that were not related to each other, I would not recommend this one at all. I will try one more of the series, but if the next one is just as bad no more.

Good no-brainer
This is a good book for when you want to read something that has a plot and characters and all that literary stuff, but you don't want to have to actually think.

My Biography
If you haven't read this, but have read any of either author, then you haven't hallucinated anything yet.

It is a frivolous romp through a sad universe that seems populated with familiar faces by two of the great experts in the genre of humorous SF.

Read it or be forever the way you are. (Not that it will change anything permanent. Just a few yucks and a strange longing for a second right arm - even if the colours don't match.)

Filled with in-jokes that only a fan would get, it is a feast for the initiated.

Too detailed
This text is not appropiate for any for introductory class to neuroscience at any level (whether grad or undergrad). The depth and detail leaves the reader confused at best. Perhaps it is suitable for an advanced gradute seeking to remedy any detail oriented holes. For all others, it is a precursor to a headache.
The smart money would go with the Kandel who clearly defines
his purpose at the outset of his classic book.
(I notice that the reviewer ,who bestowed the text 4 stars, and the author both call San Diego their home.)

A beautiful review of neuroscience.
To me as bibliophiliac and a cognitive psychologist interested in neurobiology, this is the textbook of choice and an object of desire. It is very up-to-date and well-written. Although some people have detected some lack of coherence in this work, I find it refreshing that the sections recognizably come from different research teams with somewhat different points of emphasis, but without anyone pushing his own scientific interests on the expense of those of the readers. This also guarantees that it is not only an accumulation of facts but has also interesting theoretical discussions by leading researchers. It is optimal for readers having at least some laypeople knowledge about biology, medicine, or neuroscience, and just want to know more (possibly everything), or who require a thorough and citable review of a certain topic. Readers completely new to the field may find it difficult to pick out the information suited for a beginner level - a less voluminous book would be more helpful for them. I would rather not recommend it for undergraduates courses. I would also prefer a somewhat stronger emphasis on cognitive neuroscience - after all, a few hundred pages more would do no harm...!

Serious in-depth coverage of important field
This book is a veritable tour de force from leading researchers in the area of neuroscience. It is comprehensive in scope going from modern molecular and cellular neuroscience to cognitive and behavioral neuroscience. Includes strong sections on developmental neuroscience, sensory and motor neuroscience, and regulatory systems. The book is extremely well and attractively produced; the graphics are superb. Exceptional value for money. It has been written by leading scholars involved in teaching neuroscience at the graduate level (although it may be suited to advanced undergraduates and academic medical students). Definitely the leading book in the area; required reading for professional neuroscientists and academic clinicians.

What is Magic About?
After reading this book, I still haven't got a clue what magic is about. This one goes to the trash bin.

Excellent Academic Writing
Seems to be excellent academic writing from someone who doesn't know about real magic.

A classic of Anthropology!
This book, first published in 1902-1903, in co-authorship with H. Hubert, is one of the classics of Anthropology. Marcel Mauss, disciple and nephew of great French sociologist Emile Durkheim, strongly influenced generations of anthropologists, including Claude Lévi-Strauss. The book stablished a new pattern for understanding the magical and religious phenomena. Unfortunaly, the two previous reviewrs seems to have looking for something very different. It is not a how-to-do book, it is for people interested in the Social Sciences.

Alzheimer's, Day Care, Nursing Homes and Medicaid

Sorry, but not worth the price
I had ordered this book to be shipped express, as my mother has senile dementia., and I thought I could find out more about Medicaid. I was EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED to see how this book was packaged for the price. It had said SPIRAL-BOUND, (which in itself is not expensive)., and instead I got a book with a cover that costs probably $1.00 from the drugstore. Also, glancing through the info., I knew most of it from talking to social workers and others., or from getting pamphlets or just asking questions., so I don't really see where the info is that you can't get anywhere else. It might be a little helpful for someone just starting the process., but not at all worth the price. Most I would have paid is 1/4 what the author/publisher charges. Sorry! . . .

Invaluable help not available from any other source.
This book tells,in six clearly defined steps, HOW to find a decent Alzheimer's nursing facility and HOW to get financial assistance from Medicaid. No important detail is neglected. This is information you cannot get from any other source. The author has personally and successfully gone the full route. He tells the reader what to expect. How to overcome problems along the way, and how to respond to Medicaid's numerous requests for verifications. Many, if not most attorneys would charge $1,500 for providing assistance when applying for Medicaid financial help.

total book of genius
I bought this book too see what genius is all about. The books first part discusses genius. The second part has a series of tests to gauge your level of genius. Finally the third part are a series of problems to strengthen your mental powers.

I felt that in the first part there were many fallacies. One example is when the author says that genius's who are leaders are not regarded as genius's in the full sense. Clearly, Napolean (who is regarded as a genius) showed more eminence as a winning decisive battles then bach(who is also regarded as a genius) did as writing symphonies. Therefore Napolean was the greater genius. Napolean should not be denied the "full" title of genius just because his is associated with leadership rather then creativity. Therefore the book should have been titled, "The Book of creative genius", (since it only included the genius associated with creativity), instead of it's title, "The book of total genius," (since it did not include the genius associated with leadership.)
The second part are tests to gauge your level of genius. They consist of an intelligence testing section, which doesn't give an IQ score. Then there are tests to gauge your knowledge on certain subject. The rest of the tests consist of creativity, concentration, and personality sections. These can all be cheated on if you are not totally honest with yourself, and the author does not make clear the importance of this in the beginning.

The final part which is called the genius gym consists of a number of challenging problems to boost your brainpower. They were challenging, but I found the techniques in Win Wenger's book "The Einstein Factor," to be much more effective for boosting brainpower.

However the book did make some good points about genius, and the tests can be effective in discovering your genius potential if you are honest with yourself. However if you want to get your hands on a book about genius by a guy who knows what he's talking about get, "The Origins of Genius," by Dean Keith Simonton.

Same info on Monroe's website for free!
This book is a total waste of money. I thought it would present some relevent research on the effects of Hemi Sync or binaural beats or whatever on states of consciousness, but it was mostly anecdotal reports and the little bit of "scientific research" it rehashes is already available for free perusal at Monroe-Institute.org.

Peace!

who followed who?
I wanted to see what this company had to offer and found it to be a cheap knock off of the Monroe institutes hemi-sync program. The tapes i purchased were of a poor quality and i found it hard to obtain the low alpha state so i bought the CD and found it to be much better yet lacking the spikes .More reviews to follow on all brain-sync prorams.

Clinical Information on the uses of Hemi-Sync
I disagree with the other reviews that says this information can be found for free on TMI's site. This book, while not exiciting, offers examples of clinical uses for the patented Hemi-Sync technology.

This book seems to be more for doctors or practitioners that want to see some clinical examples, and is not for the those who want to learn about out-of-body journeys or altered states.

I purchased this along with other books on Hemi-Sync just to have the most complete reference material at hand. The TMI site offers a wealth of information, but I don't recall this book being published there.
