An excellent book for Householders and Decorators alike.
This book is more then just a reference guide of carpets from around the world. It shows how carpets can be used in various interiors, from country houses to a city pied-a-terre. The authors go into detail about color, design, and texture and use actual interiors to show the many ways that carpets can be used. From the great rooms of Chatsworth, to staircases, entry halls, bedrooms in a small cottage, nothing is left to the imagination. Useful chapters include "Care & Repair" and an excellent international directory. There are also excellent examples of antique, traditional, and contemporary rugs from every part of the world as well as a good section on Kilms. This book is very useful for anyone who wants to get ideas about how to use and decorate with rugs, and more importantly WHICH rug is best for a particular setting.

Effie is a great poet!!!
I was just doing research for a class about Pikeville and came across Effie's name. I had never read any of her poetry, but when I read 1 stanza of Effie's poetry, I was hooked!!!!!

Great book!
Came across this book as a reference for a thesis I'm writing on this issue and it became my major source. Mr. Cochran masterfully delves into the subject matter and writes in a organized, concise style. Should be considered for text in related political science/sociology courses.

Outstanding
This is probably the best book I've ever read on creative B&W photography. It covers, in depth, various creative techniques for making prints that catch both the viewer's eye and interest. Most of the prints shown are not striaght prints but are highly manipulated in the darkroom. Excellent how to's and technical discussion.

To Renaissance Italy and back
An Atlas can have many functions. A simple tool to find where some place is. A tool to go to that place. Or a tool to dream about that place, the real reason why some people actually do read atlases. Equally an art book can educate you, or make you try to go and see this art. Here we have a very happy combination of a good historical atlas with plenty of well chosen art illustration from Renaissance Italy. And architecture, urban design and all sorts of creative endeavors of these times. The result is superb as you can embark again and again to the places where so much of our present world comes from. Or you can use it as a particularly pleasant reference book.

the Harmonica Wizard; DeFord Bailey
This book is a must have for any country, blues and folk music fan. This book is important in more that one way. It tells you the story of a great man and you get to learn much about early country radio and music. The book also contains many pictures of the Harmonica Wizard, DeFord Bailey.
DeFord was the first artist to ever appear on the Grand Ole Opry. I also want to recomend the CD; The Legendary DeFord Bailey.
You can look forward to many great hours reading about his life and listening to his famous and unparallelled harmonica playing, banjo pickin and guitar playing
DeFord was truly a folk music genius

The Eugenic Assault on America: Scenes in Red, White, and Black

Eugenics and the persecution of "mixed race" Americans
Smith shows the 20th century link between anti-miscegenation laws and the eugenics movement. Forced sterilization of the institutionalized, racial registration and restricting miscegenation were all linked to the idea of "improving" the [white] gene pool. The best part of the book is the hidden history of the minority of fanatical racial purists who wanted to ban all non-caucasian ancestry (with the exception of small amounts of American Indian ancestry possessed by white elites such as the descendants of Pocahontas) from the white "race." Special emphasis is placed on Virginia and the men whose names are unknown but should go down in infamy: Walter Plecker (who headed Virginia's bureau of vital statistics and delighted in hunting down "impure" whites and Indians) and Virginia aristocrat John Powell of the Anglo-Saxon Clubs. Showing the link between black nationalism and white racism, Smith details the friendship between John Powell and Marcus Garvey (both believed in promoting racial purity).

Buried African-American history
This is a wonderful exploration of a major facet of African-American history--a look at a place and time where the children of slaves built a prosperous local society. Buxton was a company town in Iowa where African-Americans comprised the middle class, the miners, the teachers, the doctors...and Whites were a minority. Race relations were generally unselfconsciously excellent, aged former residents indicated to interviewers (some of whom just could not believe it!); these people ran into the harsh racism of the outside world when the company town was disbanded and people had to resettle in DesMoines or Chicago or wherever. This book concentrates on the archaeological aspect of the Buxton Project. A must for any library of African-American studies, historical archaeology, and Midwestern history.

I'd definitely vote this president into office
This fictional president has a rough start in life but it only makes him stronger to not just be a "lip service" president when his time finally comes to lead. If any of our real politicos had the guts of this guy we might actually start addressing some of our nation's domestic problems. The best thing about this was that the first black president, Louis Hayes, turned out to be more than just black, he turned out to be a human being. Read it.

A Great Choice for Lovers' of Old Church Music
This CD is an especially great find for those of us who grew up with both Latin and French Gregorian Chant. The simple book accompanying this CD selection provides a basic, well-written history of Gregorian chant. The selections are all lovely. My favorite piece is the final Notre Pere in French.
