changed my point of view
I was looking for this book like mad and i'm just extatic that i finally found it! (This is the place to say, "thank you amazon.com!"). This is one of those wordless books that can change your whole life and the way you look at things. I've been over these wonderful story-telling illustartions hundreds of times, and i'm not tired of it yet. It's amazing how the most basic thing, like a simple cartoon story, can affect you and makce you think differently. This one should be a classic (coffe-table book)in every home.

Hector Berlioz - the literary composer
Hector Berlioz is remembered mainly as the composer of Symphony Fantastique, but he was also a gifted music critic and writer. This collection of essays is entertaining and witty, Berlioz's satirical and biting humor is liberally spread throughout. This book is accessible to amateurs and professionals alike, filled with anecdotes and insight into the mind of a creative genius.

Very useful
Atom Photon Interactions is an excellent text for atomic and optical physics. I refer back to the review material---transition amplitudes, quantum electrodynamic fundamentals, etc--- over and over again. Naturally, these sections are very brief, and the book works best along side Cohen-Tannoudji's more elementary texts Quantum Mechanics and Photons and Atoms, or their equivalents.

The later chapters are rich in techniques and intuition applicable to atom-trapping, spectroscopy, laser theory, etc. Cohen-Tannoudji covers a lot of material, and manages to link it all to a few basic fundamental principles. The book is extremely well-organized, with bite-sized sections and appendices to each chapter. An excellent collection of exercises with solutions is included in the back. Unfortunately, the text does not prompt the reader to try working these problems at appropriate times (sadly, I didn't realize the exercises were there until I'd been using the book for some time). Like Photons and Atoms, this is primarily a book for theorists; its one weakness, I feel, is that the principles, however clear, never seem connected to the actual numbers that an experimentalist or system designer can relate to.

The Autobiography of Philosophy

An excellent guide to the deeper meaning of Rousseau
Here one walks into profound reveries of unraveled clarity. Davis's book is a powerful, inspired, and enormously thought explication which gives birth to new wisdom honoring the words of Rousseau. Davis knows that the only way to do justice to him is to faithfully and painstakingly follow Rousseau's path. He is the most fortunate of authors to have Michael Davis as his companion. Suffer the first four chapters; what follows, especially in the last two chapters, will justify your effort to understand. Anyone interested in philosophy should read this book.

An appealing, colorful presentation
Tribes Of Redwall Badgers may not be suitable for library lending, with its pullout color poster, but will prove a fine parent's pick and will also appeal to school libraries for classroom enjoyment. This is recommended for prior young fans of the Redwall series: it provides a guide to the characters of the Badger Lords, covering the laws, language, and secrets of their tribes. An appealing, colorful presentation.

Absolutely beautiful photography
I lived in Moscow for some of the time Anthony photographed there. I saw his exhibit in New York. And I, too, am a photographer. His images capture the time and place beautifully. He makes the ordinary into something special. The prints he made were stunning. I saw the book that day and knew I would get home to Puerto Rico and order it from Amazon

Impressive -- for intrepid lay readers and specialists
If you are one of those lay readers who is endlessly curious and not put off by rather intense discussions of "the adaptive value of sclerophylly in mediterranean ecosystems", this book may really be for you. Although I suspect most ecotourists, one target audience, will lack the stamina for it, the book really does a fine job of conveying the excitement of the region in relatively jargon-free prose. The formatting also does much to lure the more casual reader with its adept use of illustrations, boxes, and subheads to break up the text. I was delighted to discover just how much the authors eschewed simple description in favor of spotlighting what is truly intriguing about the Mediterranean ecosystem.

Some of the highlights for me include: the description of the drying up and reflooding of the Mediterranean during the Miocene; the unusual incidence of species endemism and its relationship not only to topographical diversity but to unusual geological substrates; the profiles of curious creatures such as the blind cave salamander and Etruscan shrew; the range of adaptations to diverse environments, such as the case of the Turkish hippo that crossed over to Cyprus 100,000 years ago and dwindled to the size of a pig; the fascinating coevolution of figs and wasps; and most of all, the manifold impact that humans have had upon the region for the past 10,000 years (chapter 8). The authors conclude with a look at what can be done to sustain the biodiversity of this fascinating region.
