A Rare Find: Quality Criticism
I bought this book months ago and am still working my way through it, which is a good thing, because Joan Copjec has packed every single essay with the most acute insight that I feel my brain growing every time I read it. This book isn't, as it is promoted, a dialogue between historicism and psychoanalysis in which psychoanalysis wins. Rather, Copjec examines how historicists misuse or misinterpret Lacan in their theories, which she seeks to right my proposing different readings of Lacan. If this review makes no sense it's because I can't possibly wrap my brain around everything that Copjec says. Needless to say, if you have an interest in theory, read this book. The first essay on film theory is fascinating, and the emphasis on the failure of language to signify and how this failure is marked in language provides an exciting platform on which to rethink the social subject. I can't wait to read GIVING GROUND.

Critical theory at its sharpest
This book is a remarkable achievement. With admirable lucidity and precision, Copjec succeeds in demolishing many naive and inaccurate claims about desire and history. Anyone wishing to know why Michel Foucault and Judith Butler have impoverished debates about sexuality should read this original book. The final chapter is a truly devastating critique of Butler's *Gender Trouble*, making one wonder why that book had any influence at all.

The Secret Formulas and Techniques of the Masters
Published in Hardcover by Hacker Art Books (August, 1979)
Author: Jacques Maroger
Amazon base price: $25.00
Used price: $89.50
Average review score:

A book of rare excellence on Old Masters techniques
An excellent book of rare and unique intelligence into the drawing and painting techniques of the Old Masters. It's unusual to find a book by a knowledgeable painter, chemist, historian who was also well connected to some very good painters of the 19th century. As painter himself he actually practiced what he preached and his writings are based on his empirical insights. It shouldn't be out of print as I am continually asked by painters how to get a copy of it.

A lifetime study on Master painting techniques
Jacques Maroger, was the former Technical Director of the Laboratory of the Louvre Museum and President of the Resources of France prior to emigrating to the United States in 1939. Maroger spent most his life painting while he rediscovered the secret painting mediums used by the Old Masters. His medium, made from cook oils saturated with lead and combined with mastic resin, will give your paintings the inner light of the early Dutch Masters. If you are a realist painter, there is no paint medium found today that matches the brilliance of Jacques techniques and formulas. For the student, Maroger's flair for a motivating treatise is a must read

Sensitive Chaos: The Creation of Flowing Forms in Water and Air

Water, Water, Everywhere
It's out-of-print. No one you know has ever heard of this book. No matter: the trouble you may have in finding a copy of Sensitive Chaos will be worth it. The images will remain with you. The text will teach the old dog (you) new tricks. And years and years from now you will still recognize the spiral of water in the things you see, and you'll even feel a little more connected to the world. Beautiful book.

A beautiful and poetic view of science
This beautiful book remains scientifically accurate while describing in poetic and spiritual style the flowing of fluids in nature. A beautiful collection of pictures illustrates how even living things follow the rules of fluid flow as new cells flow forth in the growth process.

Really cute!
I cataloged this book for Jefferson County Public Library (Colorado), English is my second language, besides I am mexican, but now I am living in USA. I am trying to understand the american culture and this book helped me a lot.
I love this book, it was really cute, the drawings were so perfect and describes how live the ficticios character "Snowman", he has a lot of fun and his dream is to be a super hero.
I think adult people as well as children will enjoy this book.
I am looking forward other books by the same author.

lovely and subtle book
This is a simple story of a hard-working and earnest snowman (a teacher) who reads comic books in his spare time, then acquires magical powers by way of a gift from his class. His powers allow him to help out even more. The illustrations are great and move the story along very clearly, which will motivate younger kids, while the few bits of dialogue will keep aspiring readers interested while they learn to read. I also think the art is beautiful and charming enough to make this book a great gift for adults.

The Subversion of Christianity

an important work for all contemporary church-lovers
When I first read this book, so many things fell into place that I've been buying up copies and giving them to my friends to read. Ellul ably holds to the essential core of Christian teaching while showing how the church throughout history has consistently been led away from truly living out the gospel -- whether by outside forces or by the weight of its own success, the church has continually done exactly the opposite of what the New Testament writers tell us to do. This book is fairly easy to read, and is very straightforward: Ellul takes us through some of the most important missteps in church history and shows how the good news of Grace and Freedom was forced to the side, even with the best of intentions. Ellul challenges us to find a new way of living out the Gospel, without either conforming ourselves to our present age or rejecting the essential elements of Christian doctrine. If the church is to have any effect, he says, we must return to our origins as a group of subversive individuals who refuse to play along with society's expectations. Only by being subversive ourselves (as all the heroes of faith have been), can we return Christianity to its place as bearer of good news to a world which needs to hear it.

A Challenging Work for all Christian Scholars
Jacques Ellul is the author of some forty books, and this one lives up to the high standards that he sets with each one. "The Subversion of Christianity" is an Academic work that is both challenging to read, and thought consuming, but for a true Christian Scholar, beyond the difficult prose lies a strong arguement against the current state of Christianity today. Ellul refutes several issues of the church such as morality, anti-feminism and practices to show that Christianity of the current world is a complete contradiction of the revelation of Jesus Christ. Ellul does not waver in pointing out the causes of this subversion, and supports his thesis with a wealth of knowledge and resources. The purpose of Ellul's work is of course, the repairation of the church and the obedience to the revelation of Christ.

Umbr(a) : Science and Truth
Published in Paperback by Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Culture (31 May, 2000)
Authors: Joan Copjec, Slavoj Zizek, and Alain Badiou
Amazon base price: $8.00
Average review score:

An intervention
Umbr(a) marks a definitive break with the one-sided conventions of Lacanian literary criticism and/or clinical applications. While I would maintain that several of the articles tread familiar ground in the field of psychoanalysis and cultural studies, the Badiou and Milner articles are truly exceptional, scientifically informed studies of the relation between philosophy, science and psychoanalysis. It doesn't hurt that the Badiou article is quite critical of Lacan at times. My one complaint would be that there isn't any response to Sokal's critique of Lacan. A notable omission for such an easy target.

Worth Getting
If only for the phenomenal article by Robert Groome at the end of this book, this is worth shelling out the eight bucks. The others are all pretty standard, that is to say, you've read it all before. Mr. Groome's article on logic, however, is a very unique find.

Jacques Rocks!!
This book is a must read for Formula One fans. Gerald Donaldson has done a great job in putting together the 1st Formula One season of Jacques Villeneuve. It a fasinating look into what a driver must do to prepare for a race, and win.

A great perspective on JV as well as the 1996 season!
The book picks up with Jacques after he finishes up his Indy car responsibilities and prepares to drive for Williams in F1. It then traces a chronological "race by race" summary of 1996 from Australia to Japan. You learn not only what happened during the races in detail from the driver's perspective but also what is expected of an F1 driver before, during and in between races. The book is well written and provides tons of details both about Jacques personally and F1 in general. A must for JV fans!

Great photos
This book contains some truly spectacular photos of volcanoes and volcanic eruptions. The geology of volcanoes often creates scenes with vivid but strange, unworldly-looking colors, such as the man standing next to a small mountain of greenish-yellow sulfur, the milky, powder-blue color of the water in a volcano's caldera, the metallic colors of the mineral deposits crusting the walls and fissures in vocanoes, and the bright, honeycomb-like pattern in a lava lake, along with the other photos of red-hot lava flowing, oozing, glopping, spattering, squirting, or whatever, in the book. The book includes aerial as well as terrestrial photos, and they range from close-ups to vast panoramic views of the mountains and their surroundings. Overall this is a beautiful book with many spectacular photos, and last but not least, the text by Jacques Durieux is interesting and well-written.

Power, beauty, and devastating aftermath of active volcanoes
Augmented by Jacques Duriux's informative text, Philippe Bourseiller's impressive photography showcases the awesome power, beauty, and devastating aftermath of active volcanoes. With more than 170 full-color, double-page spreads (including satellite photos), Volcanoes reveals memorable images and history of the terrible beauty of molten rivers of fire and overwhelmed silt-coated towns. The text explains the most up-to-date methods of predicting and adapting volcanic eruptions. Whether for simply browsing or for supplementing series studies of vulcanology, Philippe Bourseiller and Jacques Duriux's Volcanoes is an outstanding contribution and highly recommended for school and community library collections.
