Free, frank and forceful
Bernard Haring was in the forefront of the reform of the Catholic Church which "took off" in the Second Vatican Council 1962-65.As a result he was one of the few in a good position to evaluate the 30 years since. His perspective is gentle and kind, but he states clearly the ways in which the present Pope and his bureaucrats have derailed, narrowed and minimised the hopes of the Council and the Church. Yet he is still hopeful, and proposes an agenda for the next century's implementation of the Council's reforms. An excellent read for Catholics and those who are interested in the development of a freer, more loving and more open Christianity.

Nuclear Safety: A Human Factors Perspective

The Most Timely of Human Factors Research in Nuclear Power
The book is a compilation of 22 "human factors" research projects in nuclear power plants, performed to address the issues of safety and risk reduction. The papers are written by a variety of internationally known nuclear experts, and represent the most current studies available in one source. The focus of the research is the affects of human interaction with engineered technology.

Unfortunately, because of the narrow scope of interest in this book, it is unavailable in most academic libraries. This is probably the most expensive book I have ever purchased. With that in mind, I must say I have no regrets. To purchase these studies separately through information services such as NTIS, would like cost about $40 each ($880 total). The information is solid and credible, and will likely serve as validators to my masters thesis.

A cohesive and solid tracing of the events in history
The first of a two-part history, Origin Of The American Revolution: 1759-1766 is a cohesive and solid tracing of the events in history leading up to America's revolt and independence. First published a generation ago, and out of print for more than thirty years, Origin Of The American Revolution: 1759-1766 remains as focused, exacting, and to the point today as it was then, with author Bernhard Knollenberg being impressively skilled at tracing political and economic events that made a struggle for independence inevitable. Edited by Bernard W. Sheehan, Origin Of The American Revolution: 1759-1766 is a scholarly, well-constructed and strongly recommended account.

Riemann, Topology and Physics
Published in Hardcover by Birkhauser (May, 1987)
Authors: Michael Monastyrsky, James King, Victoria King, and Mikhail Il'ich Monastyrskii
Amazon base price: $39.50

Excellent
This is a translation of two quite small Russian books. The first is a biography of Riemann, the second a review of "Geometrical" physics, recently updated. Even the biography includes some mathematics which I did not fully understand, but it is a great introduction, and it's good to get your feet a little wet! The book is small and very readable. I recommend it to students interested in understanding the relationships between physics, mathematics, and geometry. A gentle introduction to the "technical" journey.

Remarkably Comprehensive Data Source on European Unions
The volume's 800 pages and CD-ROM database offer an unparalleled source of historical, multi-national, sectoral, and organization-level data, of critical importance for comparing European unions. While the title is "Trade Unions in Western Europe since 1945" the book's historical reach is much farther, with most country profiles beginning analysis of trade union movements in the late 1800s or before. The authors are to be commended for melding together analyses of social, political, and economic factors with great historical detail. After the historical profile, each country's data is presented in some twenty tables, including: political events, organizational changes, lists of unions/confederations, major dates (particularly foundings/cessations), size distributions, membership and density figures (also by gender), and membership by status group and domain and by economic sector and branch. The book and CD-ROM provide a remarkably comprehensive source for union data.

The Unknown Socrates: Translations, With Introductions and Notes, of Four Important Documents in the Late Antique Reception of Socrates the Athenian
Published in Paperback by Bolchazy Carducci (01 September, 2002)
Authors: William M. Calder, Bernhard Huss, Marc Mastrangelo, and Socrates
Amazon base price: $44.00

Recommended for Greek and Latin Studies reference shelves
The collaborative effort of William M. Calder III, Bernhard Huss, Marc Mastrangelo, R. Scott Smith, & Stephen M. Trzaskoma, The Unknown Socrates is an impressive evaluation of just who Socrates really was, as its contributors strive to separate the man from the myths and legends that have grown up around him throughout history. Four ancient text translations are offered: Diogenes Laaertius (Life of Socrates), Libanius (Apology of Socrates), Maximus of Tyre (Whether Socrates Did The Right Thing When He Did Not Defend Himself), and Apuleius (On the God of Socrates). Offering introductions to four authors of antiquity and their works, translated texts with notes, the original Latin or Greek text of each work, and select bibliographies, The Unknown Socrates is a first-rate combination of primary sources and helpful interpretations. The Unknown Socrates is very highly recommended for Greek and Latin Studies reference shelves, as well as supplemental Socratic Philosophy reading lists.

A very thoughtful exposition of the Christian virtues
Bernard Haring, thorougly dusts off each of the so-called "Christian" virtues, giving them a new life, so to speak. Moral development is explained as a natural process and part of human personality development. Emphasis is on wholeness and development of solid moral and ethical character - even though this character be obtained after much personal struggle. Integrity, intellectual effort and experiential faith is seen as the path to true Christian moral development, rather than blind obedience to a system of religious authority and instruction. I often thought while reading this work, that if religion and morals had been explained to me this way, a great many of my own misunderstandings might have been avoided.

A Dark, Enduring Mystery
I read this trilogy almost three years ago, yet it regularly comes to mind as one of the most enjoyable books I've read. As someone who reads primarily non-fiction or fiction by "great" writers, I ventured to read something different with Berlin Noir. Three years later, I am still searching for a comparable novel in this genre. Kerr's presentation matures throughout these novels. The hackneyed detective that he presents in March Violets, transforms slowly into a fuller, more entertaining character. Bernie Gunther loses his overuse of trite, detective-style similes by the end of the first story. By then, the reader is enveloped in a dark world of mystery and political barbarity. Kerr's portrait of Berlin is enticingly eerie. His characters are cut from typical molds, but are presented with enough freshness to keep the reader very interested. And using the different backdrops of pre-war, war-time, and post-war Germany, Kerr was able to modify the setting but maintain the same dark intensity.

I was sorry to finish this trilogy. It is fantastic escapist literature. I have read a couple of the J. Robert Janes novels, although neither the plots, nor the characters compare favorably to Berlin Noir.

Phillip Marlow meets Herman Goering
It's been awhile since I've read a mystery series that has grabbed me with the intensity of Phillip Kerr's Berlin trilogy. Right from the start, his writing reminds you of Raymond Chandler, though more vivid and descriptive. But Phillip Marlowe never had to worry about ending up in a concentration camp and that threat gives the first two novels in this series even more of an edge. Kerr creates a dead on accurate feel for what it was like to live in Nazi Germany before the outbreak of the war. Like all good historical fiction, famous names grace the pages as minor characters, including Goering and Renhard Heydrich. Their appearances give the books weight, but Kerr is careful not to overdo it. Fans of Caleb Carr's superb novel "The Alienist" in particular should love this series as well as anyone with an interest in Nazi Germany.

Three 1930s Detective Novels -- This Time in Nazi Germany
Phillip Kerr writes in the clearest of prose and is certainly one of the most gifted of our modern thriller/mystery writers. It is a sincere pleasure to read a well-written book, in this case a compilation of three books that seamlessly span the Nazi Germany years.

This volume captures his three Bernie Gunther novels, each a gem on its own. They are rich in the atomosphere of those strange, terrible years of Nazi Germany. These novels dare to set forth true police procedurals in the upside down world of a truly lawless society. Few of us can ever image how everyday life would be in a totalitarian society. These novels get the job done with a realistic, human hero. It is a pleasure to have a story unfold through the eyes of a rare, truly brave person with human frailities, not the more common super-hero that unfortunately litters most thrillers. It is thought-provoking to remember that many members of pre-war German society were ethical, moral people that felt outrage at a society with no rule of law. Further, we contemplate why there were not enough Bernie Gunther's left to opose and strive.

I hope that Phillip Kerr gives us another installment of this wonderful Bernie Gunther mini-series.
