Revealing, inspiring, and challenging
"Jesus The Same" has opened my eyes to see more clearly the attributes of my Lord. Jefferson is able to poignantly paint a biblically-based "portrait" of the traits of Jesus Christ. During my reading of the book, I was inspired to deepen my love for God as I have come to be more impressed than ever of who Jesus really was.

An inspirational look into the character of Jesus Christ
Jesus the Same is an incredible study of the character of Jesus that challenges all Christians to imitate his example. Originally the chapters were individual sermons preached in the early 1900's and released under the title The Character of Jesus. However, the message never grows old. I plan on reading it again. It is filled with insight and references to Scripture. This is a must read for every disciple of Christ.

Excellent devotional companion
This book provides some unprecedented insight into the various characteristics found during the life of Jesus. This is significant to all christians because this is the one who we are ultimately trying to imitate. The author presents many common trials that many people face and describes how Jesus viewed the same type of situation. Many of these explanations can be very radical by presenting original conclusions, and are usually very inspiring as well. This book has had a deep impact on the way that I viewed Jesus as well as my own life.

A good one
This is the kind of poetry book you read in bed before you go to sleep. You poke your husband with your elbow and say, "Listen to this one." He does.

A Wonderful Collection
Some of the most amazing poetry written in recent times is contained in this book. The works truly exemplify the American poetry scene.

A Keeper
This book of poetry will stay with you. You will take it off the shelf time after time to reread a poem that had a distinctive ring of truth and feeling of place about it.

My favorite poem, "Dr. Invisible and Mr. Hide" by Charles Webb. Close second was "Mean and Stupid" by Christopher Howell.

A M U S T R E A D !
I'm a minister of music at an evangelical church. Almost every week, I have the conversation with someone "what are the role of emotions in our services and in the Christian's life in general?" (Nobody really asks it THAT way, but you get the idea.)

I've come to the point where I won't even begin the conversation without having them read this book. Seriously! Edwards covers ALL the issues in a thurough and practical way.

Strap on your thinking cap, but know it's worth it! I read this book every year and God never fails in using it to refocus my heart on Him.

Defines the term "spiritual classic"
Houston's abridgement and editing have led to this one effect among others: Reading the book itself becomes a spiritual experience. We become examined, humbled, then excited and inspired. These are the questions Edwards' explores: What are the roles of the affections (i.e., emotions) for a Christian? How do we know they are genuinely from God's grace? In answering this he points to the beauty of God's holiness itself--a concept rarely seen in Protestant literature and rarely seen at all between the Middle Ages and von Balthasar. Another important concept is that the presence of the Holy Spirit within a believer provides a "new sense" to add to the 5 senses. Edwards' elucidation of the scripture's view on the affections/emotions is worth the price of the book alone.

good God makes man happy
no wonder many consider edwards north america's greatest thinker. like his other works, this volume is priceless. he brilliantly delves into the human psyche, exposing man's emotional needs and their fulfilment in God.

Praise from a literacy tutor
So many adult literacy students want to learn to read, or improve their reading, in order to read and understand the Bible -- yet there are so few easy-to-read Bibles for the adult learner! Most children's Bibles are woefully incomplete, or too childish or bear too little resemblance to the Bibles their friends and families are using in church or synagogue. This Old and New Testament in one volume, though designed for use by children ages 9-12, is a joy! It's simplified/condensed, but amazingly complete, with a comprehensive index and full chapter citations at the top of every story for the student who wants to know more. Beautifully illustrated, and a pleasure for grown-up students and tutors to read aloud, together. My student (a 46-year-old male) and I were so happy to find it, and we are delighted to recommend it to other tutors and new readers.

Best of the bunch
I teach ancient history at the college level, and I give this book to my children to learn about the Bible. It has nearly all the stories, not just Noah and Moses, and tells them in a lively way, with plenty of action, but in words children can understand. And it is short, with lots of colorful pictures. There is no moralizing: this Bible sticks to the text.

Don't miss this book
I found this book helpful, realistic, and compassionate. Don't Leave It To Chance explores myths and misconceptions about gambling, helps us identify the extent of the problem, and guides us through the emotional and financial impact of the disorder. The authors skillfully bring us to a place where we can build a meaningful dialogue with family members, work through anger, anxiety and loss of trust, and begin the process of regeneration with new momentum and understanding. The scope is comprehensive with a style that is personal, enjoyable and logically consistent. I was amazed with the depth of insight into motivation, emotional issues and relationships I was collecting along the way. Written with deep psychological understanding and genuine concern, Don't Leave It To Chance sorts through the difficult emotions of this complex issue, teaching skills for introspection and communication that will serve readers in all aspects of their lives.

Enlightening, Thorough, Extremely helpful
I thought this book was extremely enlightening and thorough in it coverage of the disease of compulsive gambling. It is an excellent resource for families of compulsive gamblers in 1) understanding the disease 2) guiding families and friends of gamblers in the actions they need to take in order to protect themselves as well as in helping the gambler move closer to recovery. In addition, this book provides treatment resource info and some evaluation as to the effectiveness of those type of treatments. This book is a comprehensive guide for the families of compulsive gamblers. Extremely helpful and easy to understand.. A++

A wonderful edition of a classic lexicon
This is a great Hebrew lexicon with detailed entries with references to the other semitic languages such as Aramaic, Arabic, Syriac, and Ethiopic. In fact, it even has a biblical Aramaic lexicon as an appendix.

This Oxford edition is much nicer than the Hendrickson one.

Vital scripture study resource. Don't need to know Hebrew!
Why a lexicon? "In the beginning was the WORD." Word usage is enormously helpful to Biblical understanding. H.W.F. Gesenius (mid 1800's) is acclaimed as the Noah Webster of Old Testament Hebrew lexicons (dictionary). He brings to the Old Testament a wonderful blend of Christian/Jewish background and insight. Be sure to note not only the word you are looking up, but also the words that surround it, for they too often lend very interesting and even uncanny insight (divine providence).

Reading the Water (Morse Poetry Prize, 1997)

well worth checking out
I found this one in the Dartmouth Bookstore Basement for $1 and what with it being National Poetry Month (April) and the cover blurb declaring it the winner of the 1997 Samuel French Morse Poetry Prize (no I've never heard of it either), I figured I'd give it a shot. It was four quarters well spent.

Using traditional poetry forms and the incidents of everyday life, Webb crafts some really witty and wonderful little poems. Whether he's writing about a Cristo art project (Umbrellas) or The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Twenty Years Too Late to See The Rocky Horror...), he uncovers the amazing in the mundane. Several have a pretty sharp edge to them, like Prayer for the Man Who Mugged My Father, 72--suffice it to say, the mugger hopes the prayer doesn't come to pass. And a couple are just really funny, like Broken Toe, where the title occurrence at least snaps him out of his middle aged complacency. And I found one image that for me really captures what poetry can do at its best, the clever use of words to paint an indelible image. It's from the poem Spiders:

Their webs, transparent fielders' gloves,
pluck flies out of mid-air.

The baseball analogy alone is enough to get my attention, but the play on the word flies exemplifies the cleverness on display throughout this collection.

The poems of Charles Harper Webb are well worth checking out. I found a bunch of his poems on-line and linked to them below--give them a try and if you see the book for $1, grab it.

GRADE: A

Reading Charles Harper Webb
Probably one of the best and most clever books of poetry written in the last ten years. Webb is a member of the "stand-up" school of West Coast poetry, a movement that seeks to inject comedy and surprise into the otherwise staid and dull world of poetry. He's Billy Collins, but with a much darker--and smarter--edge.

The best book I have ever read on Lawrence.
Having read everything ever written on Lawrence, and even written a book myself, I can unconditionally state that this is the best book in the field. I unconditionally reccomend it to all readers, whether neophytes wanting to learn about the "myth behind the man," or seasonsed Lawrence experts. Although each essay shines in its own way, Stang's stands out as a major new contribution to Lawrence scholarship.

THE BEST BOOK ON LAWRENCE EVER
Having read everything ever written on Lawrence, and even written a book on him myself, I can state without qualification that this book contains the best work ever produced on Lawrence "of Arabia." I reccomend it both to the first-time reader wanting to go beyond the Lawrence of legend, and to the long-time academic devotee of the military and intellectual career of this icon of the 20th century. Although each essay is excellent in its own way, Stang's stands out as a pillar of Lawrence scholarship.

the basis of the scientific reserch about human intelligence
Everyone who wants looking into the human intelligence must read this book. Current research in the field born from the Spearman's conception of the cognitive abilities of the man. The discovery of g is one of the most important in the whole history of the psychology. Even, the reserch about cognitive processes concerning psychometric abilities is explained in this book, several decades before the cognitive paradigm was taken seriosly!!!!, Spearman talk about reaction time, knowledge of the process underlaying on the time that a person last making a task, etc. In short, if you want to understand what and why about the wonderful world of the human intelligence, this book help us like no one. It is the real source of others impresionat books like "The g factor" by A. Jensen, "Human cognitive abilities" by J.B.Carroll and "Geography of Human Intelligence" by M. Juan-Espinosa, which could not have been written without the work of Charles Spearman explained in this book. Enjoy with it and take advantage of his wisdom!!!!
