Very inspiring to read!
I LOVE Sergei and Valya's "Eating without Heating" book - we've given away so many truffles alone that it's not even funny! It's very inspiring to read such a great book by young people (we're not tooooooo much older... 26 and 27...) - and always mention and pass around the book at our veggie cooking class we teach.

Young people like you give me hope for this world!
When I see young people like you I do have hope for this world.
Thank you so much from my heart. You are beautiful people and I love your book, especially the part where you talk about your own experience and life.

Great Book For All Ages!
This isn't just a recipe book. Sergei and Valya tell us how eating raw foods changed their lives dramatically. It's an interesting read for teens because the authors provide motivation to adopt raw foods in ways that teens can relate to. Also, parents are given advise about how to make it easier for their kids to eat raw foods.

Lots of yummy pictures of raw foods, including un-chocolate cake and live pizza!

There are 18 chapters of tasty, easy to prepare recipes. Each chapter starts out with helpful information about preparing the type of food in that section. For example, before the 14 delightful soups in the soup chapter, we're advised "If you want to make a vegetable soup, start by blending oil or avacado with some juicy veggie or fruit, then add spices and texture". This is only part of the info which will make readers confident to attempt these recipes, or create their own raw foods.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who would like to know more about eating raw foods, or for those who have been eating raw foods and want more variety.

Great Insider Descriptions
I met Mr. Berezkhov in March at the Stalin Conference hosted by UCR. He was a very friendly man who has seen some interesting times. His book is one of the best that I have read. A basic knowledge of events at that time is definitely recommended, but those who know what was going on at the time will find this book appealing.

Great first person account
I took a class from Professor Berezhkov while he was teaching here in Claremont. This book was one of our texts. The only thing more thrilling than hearing Professor Berezhkov speak was reading the book. If anyone has an interest in Soviet politics or the inner machinations of World War II politics, this is the book to read. It pre-supposes some knowledge, but if one has an interest, and has a good general knowledge, I would definitely read this book. He tells things from an insider's point of view that I haven't found anything else to compare to. The prose gets dense in parts, so I wouldn't reccomend it for a complete beginner.

Sergei Rachmaninoff: A Lifetime in Music

This book is excellent
I found this book extremely helpful and a joy to read. I have used it as a resource for a Rachmaninoff class that i am creating and also for my own pleasure. It spans through Rachmaninoff's life, going in-depth to look at glimpses of Rachmaninoff's life with family, and then meticulously explores his music career. It looks into what inspired him, his meetings with other famous composers, his performances, and includes many letters about his personal life that he wrote to his family and friends. Overall, an excellent look into the life of a composer about whom we do not know much.

A must-have for any Rachmaninoff lover.
This book is very thouroughly written, drawing on resources of Rachmaninoff's relatives, letters that Rachmaninoff himself wrote, and of personal interactions. It gives a glimpse into Rachmaninoff's private life, which very little is known about, and shows Rachmaninoff for the true musical genius that he is.

Must Reading for the Assessment Center Candidate
If you agree that identifying and selecting the very best possible leaders for your organization is among your most important responsibilities, or, if you are a police officer seeking a higher level within your own police agency, then you need to read this book and keep it close at hand.

Assessment centers have gained a high degree of credibility in recent years as an objective, valid, useful and fair means of evaluating the qualifications, skills and abilities of persons for advancement within law enforcement.

Drawing on current knowledge and his own extensive experience, the author provides a thorough overview of the design and administration of an assessment center for police and fire personnel. This book looks at a variety of different assessment center exercises designed to elicit critical leadership and behavioral traits consistent with potentially successful leaders.

The book is skillfully crafted by the author with a three-fold goal in mind. First, for those who are planning on participating as a candidate in an assessment center. Secondly, it assists the reader who may be interested in using an assessment center as part of their selection process. Finally, it provides meaningful information to those who may simply be interested in obtaining more information about the process.

This work offers invaluable insight concerning the reliability, cost-effectiveness, and objective methods for the selection of candidates for higher appointments. Topics include the advantages of an assessment center, typical assessment center exercises, design and administration, selection and training, candidate evaluation and scoring methods, preparation, and an overall summary. How or why an assessment center should be conducted and the manner in which candidates are evaluated by the assessors are among the many important features of this book. Concluding with numerous exercise plans, typical assessment center schedules, candidate evaluation and assessor feedback forms, this volume will serve as an excellent textbook in administrator preparatory programs.

Sample exercises and relevant grading forms are also included as well as detailed descriptions and diagrams provide basic planning considerations such as room layout.

The author leads the reader through a straightforward and well-written tour of the assessment center from start to finish. The book is well-scripted, easy to read and all of its concepts are well explained and effortless to follow.

The book includes chapters on typical assessment center exercises, design and administration, selection and training of assessors, candidate evaluation and scoring methods, how to prepare for an assessment center and detailed appendices that contain sample exercises, schedules and evaluation forms.

In summary, it pays, both as a candidate and, as a law enforcement executive, to know what to expect in an assessment center. From start to finish, this is a thoroughly researched, intelligently presented and easy to read work on the critical essentials in conducting an successful assessment center. It is a necessary reference for one of your most important responsibilities: selecting, or becoming, a future law enforcement leader for tomorrow.

The Brakhage lectures: Georges Méliès, David Wark Griffith, Carl Theodore Dreyer, Sergei Eisenstein
Published in Unknown Binding by The GoodLion ()
Author: Stan Brakhage
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Brakhage paints a telling self-portrait.
The Brakhage Lectures are a collection of avant-garde filmmaker Stan Brakhage's reflections on the techniques and contributions to cinematic evolution of four major directors-- Georges Melies, D W Griffith, Carl Dreyer and Sergei Eisenstein. It was first published in May 1972 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where Brahkage taught and delivered these lectures (or rudimentary forms of what turned into these writings) during the fall and winter semesters of 1970-71. The book is 106 pages in length, 23 of which are taken up by reproductions of photographs and film stills. It includes a breif foreword written by the poet Robert Creeley.

Brakhage has produced a lot of writing, but most of it reflects upon own aesthetic process. Occasionally he turns his thought toward the work of his compatriots in the avant-garde-- as he does in FILM AT WIT'S END.

As a document of Brahkage's thoughts about the more tradition cinema, with which he had little to do, BRAKHAGE LECTURES is a fascinating artifact. Brakhage's Romantic construction of the genius of these filmmakers and his insistence upon finding meaning in the most minute details of their lives provides a more telling portrait of the author than of his four subjects. The various essays are also riddled with insightful obsvervations which demonstrate both Brakhage's knowledge of film history and the discourses which penetrate it. As a text on film theory, it is less relevant-- there are many better published works on all of these directors.

Beautiful, romantic and uplifting
I loved this book. Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov are the best pairs skaters of all times. This book shows how they met, fell in love, got married and became parents. It must have taken a lot of emotion out of Katia to write this book and relive her life with her Sergei, but it was good for her. I enjoyed the story of how they met and started skating with each other, when he at first didn't think much of her. But as the book progresses, you see how that started to change. Katia grew up into a beauty and Sergei was right there. In the book, you learn a lot about Russia and how life was in the former Soviet Union. You learn a lot about Russian traditions and their way of life, which is so different than the way of life in the west. You also learn about how figure skaters lead their lives and how stressful it can get. We see how Katia and Sergei fall in love, get married and then have Daria. We feel the pain and sorrow of all the deaths that are in the book and we can relive that awful day when Sergei died of a heart attack. The next few chapters are wonderful, as Katia talks openly about how she felt sometimes that it was her fault, how she felt she was too lucky and all the pain and emotions she went through. The tribute chapter is beautifully done and once you read that part, you understand the tribute a lot better. This book deals with romance and tradegy, but also talks about getting your life back together. Katia's decision to keep on skating as a singles skater shows how much she loves the sport and how she is wanting to go on with ther life. Of course, her heart will always be with Sergei, but she knows now that she will be OK and having her little Daria helps her a lot as well. Her courage and determination are inspiring to all of us who have been through terrible pain. It is wonderfully written and as you read it, you can hear Katia's voice in your head, as if she is there talking to you. That is a sign of a fantastic book and you know all the things that are in there have come f

This is a wonderful book!
This is one of the most wonderful, most touching, most compeling books that I have ever read. It just pulls you in. Once you start reading it, you just can't stop. It's a wonderful explanation of love and life. Ekaterina expresses herself so well in this novel. She tells how she led a fairytale life with Sergei. How he took care of her and sheltered her from the harsh and bitter world. Then when he died, she tells of the extreme loss of herself that she felt, the lonliness, and how she basically had to learn to live again . . . alone. It's like she is right there in the room with you, telling you her deepest, most heartfelt feelings. When you finish reading this book, you, yourself feel a deep sense of loss, because you can tell that the story is not over. No matter how much loss Ekaterina suffered, her life went on. No matter how hard it was, she went on to skate again . . . with Sergei right beside her.

I recommend this book to anyone, young or old. Especially to teenagers like myself, because it teaches so many life lessons that are so hard to explain. It's astonishing how well Ekaterina was able to distinguish her feelings and put them in words in this book to share with all of us. I plan on reading it several times more. I suggest that you do too!

A must read for all Gordeeva & Grinkov fans!!!
Highly recommended for anyone who cherishes love, family, and friendship. This book is a moving account of the love and loss Ekaterina (Katia) Gordeeva experienced with Sergei Grinkov. Katia was only 24 when she lost Sergei Grinkov, her husband of five years and skating partner of 13 years, to a fatal heart attack. To most people 25 years is but a very short segment of our lives. When seen through the eyes of Katia, 25 years is an enormous portion of the gift we call "Life". With honesty and emotion interspersed with uplifting humor, Katia tells of her life with Sergei Grinkov. She shares with us the rigors or training and rigid discipline required of Olympic Figure Skating champions, the passion and emotion that made G & G the greatest figure skating pair of all time, the hearts and souls of two young children growing up in Russia, the tender romance of a kind and gentle young man and a naive teengage girl, the love and devotion to one another, and the joy of raising their young daughter. Katia has the ability to tell their life story in such a way as to leave you, not with the impression of a perfect life, but of a life filled with the perfect love. Gordeeva and Grinkov were not perfect nor were their lives, but the love was always there to guide them through life's struggles. If ever two people were made for each other, it must have been Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov

a gripping true story of one young russian communist
who was able to escape to canada in the end, where he was saved. this is an amazing book, a true story. he talks about meeting with some of the leaders of the country, the communists at the top. to me, the most amazing part of this book is that if sergei had stayed where he was, he would have been promoted high up in the country - perhaps all the way to the top - and we may have been hearing of him in the news today. but he realised that none of it was right, that there was truth out there, and that it was held by the Christians he had been hired to torment and kill. he finally escaped to canada and died shortly thereafter. this is an amazing book. if you can get your hands on it, read it!

A Great Piece of True Literature
"The Persecutor" was one of the best books I have ever read! Totally outstanding detail that kept me going page after page. From his childhood, to him escaping to Cananda, Sergei Kourdokov took you on a trip to Russia, were life is hard and only the strong survive. This story was not only suspensful, but very moving and tragic. I recommend this book for those seeking spiritual revival or just to have a book to read again and again!

Modern day Saul turned to Paul
Sad this book is not available, but delighted to read that many others were moved by this marvelous working of God in the life of this young man in the former Soviet Union.

The scene of his planning the escape off the ship is magnificent and the young girl on one of his raids taking advantage of the opportunity God gave her shared the living hope within her.

Get this book, you'll be blessed!
