An Inspiring Story of an Influential General
The General's General is an interesting and entertaining life of one of the 19th Century's most influential soldiers. Although little remembered today, MacArthur was an heroic lieutenant, an influential middle level officer and eventually the leading General in the U.S. Army.

The book touches on several aspects of U.S. history. In reading the story of the General's father, Arthur MacArthur, Sr., the reader gets a peak into the 19th century politics of Wisconsin in particular and the U.S. in general.

As a young man MacArthur joined the 24th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry as an adjutant, a position for which his youth initially proved a distinct disadvantage. MacArthur's first glory came with the assault on Missionary Ridge south of Chattanooga on November 25, 1863. After taking the first level of Confederate rifle pits, which was the objective of the charge, MacArthur led his men on an unordered charge up to the top of the hill, gaining the admiration of all who observed him, from Generals Grant and Sherman on down.

In the post war army, MacArthur made two significant contributions. While commanding at Fort Selden, New Mexico, MacArthur compensated for the absence of a suttler by establishing an enlisted men's canteen, which became the forerunner of the PX system. As a staff officer, he later obtained a change in Army policy which permitted the award of medals to officers. This change in policy resulted in MacArthur being awarded the Medal of Honor.

MacArthur's moment in the sun came with the advent of the Spanish American War. Surprised by his assignment to the Philippines, MacArthur made the most of the transfer to Asia. Over a three year period, MacArthur played a major role in the conquest of the Philippines which had begun with the destruction of the Spanish fleet by Adm. Dewey. The battle began with an defeat of the Spanish troops followed by a long war, first conventional and then guerrilla, against the Philippine Republican troops.

After his appointment as Military Governor of the Philippines, MacArthur began to experience difficulties with the civilian officials sent to rule the Islands, primarily William Howard Taft. The dispute with Taft eventually led to MacArthur's dismissal as Military Governor and his retirement from the army.

In telling this story the reader is introduced into the many stages on which the war was played out. The effect on the political situation in the United States is well developed. The foreign policy debates incited by the conquest of the Islands are explained. The war on the ground bears an uncanny resemblance to the situation which later Americans found in Vietnam.

The introduction of the MacArthur family to Asia is well covered. The initiation starting with the war in the Philippines continues with the Grand Tour of Asia and is capped during MacArthur's role as military observer to the Russo-Japanese War.

This book sheds much light on the development of Arthur's son, Douglas. In it we read of the desolate western outposts in which Douglas spent his youth, the society into which he was introduced and the role his mother played in his development. It was on the Grand Tour of Asia that Douglas claimed to have learned to understand the Asian mind. Douglas' familiarity with Asia would come to play a role in his influential involvement in American policy toward Asia in the middle of the 20th Century. The similarities in the careers of both Arthur and Douglas are laid before the reader. At the time of the writing of the book, the only Father-Son Medal of Honor winners, both would have their careers marred by major conflicts with civilian superiors and would end their days in virtual exile from the services to which they had devoted most of their lives.

The General's General is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the story of this remarkable man and in the Army's role in U.S. history the Civil War through the period before World War I.

An outstanding book on a little known general
Mr. Young has given us an excellent account of the life of Arthur MacArthur and his turbulent world from the Civil War (where he won the Medal of Honor) to the rugged West to the Phillipines. Well researched and well documented. Never a dull moment and his information of the brutal and deadly war in the Phillipines aroused my curiousity to seek more knowledge of that conflict. The text captured the desolate and often bloody campaigns as well as the rough life of a soldier and his family. A top notch read.

One of America's most forgotten heros
Arthur MacArthur is one of this countrys most forgotten heros if you enjoyed reading Old soldiers never die: The life and times of Douglas MacArthur, you will be astonished by the career simularitys he had with his father. Arthur MacArthur was the son of a judge, he was a hero of the civil war, Millitary Governor of the Philippines, and like his son rose to be the top millitary officer of his generation. History has all but forgotten this soldier, statesman, and father of one of the most unforgetable persons in American history.

Easy Activities
This book has simple activities that are designed to help give a child the necessary perceptual motor-skills needed to succeed in school. The activities are in 8 categories: motor, visual motor, ocular motor, vision, laterality, directionality, sequential processing, & simultaneous processing. The things I had to purchase were a chalkboard & metronome. The other materials needed I had on hand; examples are index cards, dictionary, rulers, paper, pencil, colored chalk, etc. These are actual activities you can do and not just theoretical. They are simple and easy-to-follow. I am doing these with my dyslexic son & plan to use with my not dyslexic younger daughter.

Excellent Resource
I purchased this book to help with my 3 year old son who just didn't seem to be learning things very well. The book has helped tremendously! I would recommend it to all parents of young children. It is easy to read and the exercises are easy to follow and do with young children. Dr. Lane explains well the reasons for different activities, which has enabled me to incorporate more learning activities into our "normal" routine.

Excellent Vocabulary Builder for Students & Adults
This has been a fantastic vocabulary workbook for my homeschooled kids. The words are not far out words one would only encounter in obscure texts but words our kids will see in their future reading. The exercises help the kids in several ways: learn the definitions & spellings, see the words used correctly, and use & apply the words in a variety of ways that also prepare them for the SAT (e.g. word analogies). This is the best vocabulary workbook I have ever seen. I am an English teacher and have homeschooled for 9 years.

I bought this for both sets of parents!
There are a lot of retirement books out there, so I went with the one with a recognizable name and I'm glad I did. My parents haven't thought enough about retirement and I wanted to spur them to action. They were pleased to find out that there were many things they could do now, even at this late date, to help them, and they even starting giving me tips on ways I could start planning. So then I gave this book to my husband's parents who are already retired, and they ended up buying it for friends too. There are tons of tips, easy things you can do, worksheets, charts, action lists, tips--even a section on how to overcome adverse events like losing your job and divorce. It is worth the read. You'll learn a lot and be happy you did.

Excellent adventure story/biography for teenagers
My great-grandmother inexplicably had this autographed copy of Holmes' Ewing Young: Master Trapper among her things. I first read it around the age of 9, and I was definitely enthralled and excited by Young's biography. It was all the more real living in the Chehalem Valley, around Newberg, Oregon; right where Ewing Young actually had walked. He died in the Red Hills of Dundee, which is about two miles from my home (and where my 4th grade teacher lived, oddly enough). I think kids and jr. high'ers will be just as enthralled as I was by this.

A Great Children's Siddur
The authors and illustrators have put together a visual feast for the eyes. The illustrations in this child's siddur are captivating. The easy to read hebrew, english, and transliteration is great for the beginning student of Jewish prayer. The book is arranged in a style that is easy to follow, with the front of the book for beginners and graduating to the advanced prayers in the latter part of the book. The modern and easy to understand translation of the traditional Jewish prayers, make explantion to young children very easy and enjoyable. I have really enjoyed using this book with my daughter. She looks forward to our prayer time using this book. There are even traditional songs in the back of the book to refresh your memory. All in all I really enjoy this siddur and highly recommend it to any Jewish parents looking for a good beginning to intermediate guide to teaching traditional prayers to their child.

The perfect book for teachers!
Kathi Appelt's book of poetry is my favorite book to use with intermediate and high school readers. After twelve years in the classroom, no book comes close to the success I have experienced with Just People.

The book is organized into two sections -- one containing transcendent free-verse poems focusing on the adolescent experience, and the second an exploration of Appelt's own writing process with specific invitations to respond to each poem.

The title poem "Just People" stuns my students. They visualize the story so easily thanks to Appelt's imagery that they share Marsha Cates' loss when her boyfriend is killed by a drunk driver. "Emergence" captures every teen's desire for breaking out and venturing into the unknown of adulthood. Appelt focuses on the simple image of a young person sitting in a parked car in the driving rain, yet the yearning is universal. "Javier" is a poem of rebirth. A young boy waits outside a library in the early morning cold. A compassionate school librarian breaks the rules and lets him in early. His life is transformed through the warmth of books.

I've had the opportunity to present with Kathi Appelt and have her speak to my students. She is a writer of uncommon grace who can take young readers on emotional roller-coaster rides. I love this book!

sophisticated splender
This was a sophisticated and marvelously written novel that was exciting and interesting the whole way through. Through wonderfully complex and comic scenes, and a unique, and well woven plot, you will want to keep reading. A great quality the book had were certain habits, or ritual types of writing around certain characters, such as P.C. Mogpuss, the rather unknowledgeable detective in the story. Every time, since he was supposed to be fashionable, the author always explained in detail what he was wearing. It was so funny, and well put. All these little marvels, the amazingly well worded languge (various similes, imagery, sensory images, etc.), and the general fun and mysterious feeling to the book, made it an exceptionally good read.
