Author Elevates Guide Above the Usual High Standard
This is a super book packed with great information! Reid Bramblett, while working within the generally great guidelines of the Frommer's travel series, also brings out his quirky and appealing sense of humor and warmth. (I actually sought out this book because I had bought another guide he had written.) He tells these great stories about SoHo, for example, that make it more than just a listing of information.

Like all the Frommer's guides, this provides great details on what to see, but encourages you to explore on your own as well. I have practically planned my trip around Reid's advice on the neighborhood walks, and this little book is a much more convenient and authentic way to experience New York than on a bus or something.

Like I said, any Frommer's book is great. The extra bonus on this book is the author's humor and warmth.

Excellent book for selection of colleges.
For the person who have no idea what colleges they go to, and what to look for in colleges. The book guides you through with a self-assessment survey in the beginning that allows you to prioritize between preferences you may have for colleges.

The most useful part of the book, however, is the catagorized colleges. Unlike other books that list colleges by state or alphabetic order, this book lists the "brain" colleges, the liberal arts colleges, the "specialized" colleges. This allows me to find colleges that are similar to the ones they are interested in.

Also gives significant insights into the colleges with long and informative commentaries on each of the profiled colleges.

Also includes a section on the admissions process itself.

The only shortcoming is the fact that not too many colleges are included, but the ones that are are amazingly done.

I spent an entire junior year trying to choose colleges. This book did the job in a few hours.

This book says it all
Alexander Thomas wrote about three towns in upstate New York, which has been having pretty bad economic problems. What makes this book worth reading is that he shows how what's happening today developed from the end of world war II. He talks about Utica and the urban renewal programs, the highways, the effect of companies moving out, and how the state of the city today is really the product of fifty years of events. Then he shows how small towns like Cooperstown and Hartwick have suffered the same trends but, because theyre small towns, they experienced them differently. Everybody interested in upstate New York needs to read this book! Anybody interested in social change needs to read it too.

The Greatest Quick Read of the Wars of the Roses
This book was excellent. I was interested in finding more out about England during the 15th century, and this was the prefect book to come to. It is a nice, thorough overview of the time period, in a language that's both entertaining and understandable.

An exceptional, informative, highly recommended history
Hasia Diner is the Paul S. and Sylvia Steinberg Professor of American Jewish History at New York University. In Lower East Side Memories: A Jewish Place In America, she recounts the history of Manhattan's Lower East Side in terms of its Jewish community, largely populated by immigrants from Eastern Europe. During the years 1880-1930 it was never ethnically (or even religiously) homogenous. It was a place of tenements, poverty, sweatshops, packs of roaming children, a dark warren of pushcart-lined streets and social work pioneering. Professor Diner surveys its popular culture, and the impact of the Lower East Side as an icon symbol upon such diverse venues as children's stories, novels, movies, museum exhibits, television shows, summer-camp reenactments, walking tours, consumer catalogues -- even photos hung on deli walls. After World War II the Lower East Side was enshrined as the portal through which Jews passed from European oppression into the promise of America. After 1960, the Lower East Side gave secularized and suburban Jews a culturally transmitted story of their origins and heritage. Lower East Side Memories is an exceptional, informative, highly recommended history of a community, a heritage, and a cultural identity arising from one of the most distinctive and unique neighborhoods in American twentieth century history.

excellant historical perspective and research
Norris and Bockelmann turn up a winner in this insightful look at business. I have read Norris financial column for years and was always impressed with his "wordsmith" readability. The editors do not get bogged down in technical language but instead have presented a very readable work. A nice Christmas Gift idea.
