Thoughtful and life-changing
Macaulay thoughtfully and concisely introduces us to a living education, to the world of Charlotte Mason, where children are valued and encouraged through play, literature, and warm relationships with the world. Perfect as an aid in awakening thoughts towards education as a 'joyous adventure and celebration of life, as well as a solid preparation for living', "For the Children's Sake" is an excellent stepping stone on the way to how life and education should be.

Quality supplement
This book by Iron Crown is a quality addition to the middle earth roleplaying world - it combines excellent material with an easily understandable, logical presentation pattern. I personally find Mirkwood the most fascinating area of Middle Earth, and to be able to acts within it is great fun. Dwarf, elf or hobbit; no character should be without a bit of first hand experience under the portentious bowers of this ancient forest. If you only buy one supplement for the MERP game system, this should be it!

Like an Old Friend
I have had a copy of "Mrs. Restino's Country Kitchen" since it was published in 1976. Its cover is now tattered and creased, quite a few of the pages are stuck together with unidentifiable food particles, and not long ago I finally had to repair the collapsing spine with tape -- that's how much I've used this book in the last 24 years. Ironically, I was never a back-to-nature person, a vegetarian, or a hippie -- I simply appreciated this book for its intelligent, clear-eyed approach to food and cooking. Over the years I grew to depend on it whenever I needed an idea for preparing an unfamiliar vegetable, or if I happened to have odds and ends lying around and didn't quite know what to do with them. Recently I've been using it more than ever, since my significant other is a botanist and a fine gardener, and I've discovered a little of the excitement of growing fresh vegetables, albeit in a tiny urban garden. In short, I would recommend this book to anybody, rural or urban, carnivore or vegetarian, hippie or yuppie -- Restino's writing style is straightforward, unsentimental, charming, full of character, and clearly comprehensible. You don't have to cook on a wood stove to be infected by her honesty, her clarity, or her very understandable desire to know for a certainty where one's food comes from. As a footnote -- this book, and the distinct picture it provides of its author, affected me personally, to the point where I have sometimes found myself wondering what might have happened to Susan Restino -- did she survive the turbulent '70s, did she stay in the country, how did her own life turn out. I'm glad to see she is still active, and that this wonderful book seems to be forthcoming in a new edition. It richly deserves a multi-generational following.

The Poems of Aemilia Lanyer: Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum (Women Writers in English 1350-1850)

Refreshing Woman Writer of the Renaissance
In Aemilia Lanyer's only volume of published poems, SALVE DEUS REX JUDAORUM, this Renaissance author uses beautifully crafted poetry to defend women against prevailing negative female stereotypes of the time. In "Eve's Apology," this portion of the poem is spoken from the point of view of Pontius Pilate's wife, who is begging for the life of Christ. She explores who really bares the guilt in original sin. She is passionate, yet uses reason in her argument (something women were not thought cabable of doing) and makes her point that any guilt all women may bear in original sin will be far overshadowed by the guilt men, in turn, may bear for Pilate's order to execute Christ.

In addition, in "To the Virtuous Reader", Lanyer states that her purpose in writing is to praise women, and to make it known that they are not all lazy, gossiping, lecherous, deceitful, or stupid as most men of the time supposed. She includes a list of virtuous women to encourage and praise other women to use them as exemplum. If you are interested at all in a female writer's perspective on Renaissance ideas, I highly recommend Aeilia Lanyer's beautiful poetry.

Good, but not what I expected
I've read about five books by Ursula K. Le Guin, and thought they were outstanding. Although perhaps not the most exciting books I've ever read, they were still . . . encaptivating. Anyway, I got this book expecting it to be essays by Le Guin on the methods, styles, and quirks of writing fantasy (and Sci Fi.) That's not what it is. This book is a collection of speeches made by Le Guin to Sci Fi conventions and other similar groups. Although a great book to explore the many literary ramifications of the "fantastic" fiction groups, this isn't a book for the aspiring writer, it's for the dedicated reader. So if you fall into that category, I recommend it.

The best comments on fantasy since Tolkien's
Ursula Leguin's The Language of the Night is a must-read for anyone interested in writing fantasy. Her insights in "From Elfland to Poughkeepsie" on the importance of style in bringing a fantasy world to life provide a rare and perceptive analysis of what makes Tolkien and other greats stand out above the latest have-sword-will-travel.

Will entertain - and make you think
I'll level with you - I actually prefer what LeGuin has to say ABOUT sci-fi and fantasy over her actual books - and there's several of her books I really enjoyed. Any serious reader or writer of these genres should read this collection of her essays. Not only will you find specific notes on her books, but precepts that form the very fabric of what we call sci-fi and fantasy today. LeGuin broke the barrier in several ways - this book will demonstrate how. I especially enjoyed "Why are Americans Afraid of Dragons?" The chapter on Mrs. Brown is highly valuable to consider when studying or writing character. Can you remember the names of the main characters a month after you finish a book? - A year? - Ten years? LeGuin tries to answer what makes character memorable - the reasons may perhaps surprise you. And fans of Tolkien will enjoy LeGuin's insight on the character of Frodo. LeGuin is intelligent but casual, often hilarious and always thought-provoking. An excellent collection.

Mystery
Palindrome is a masterful novel that no reader will soon forget. Palindrome is an excellent piece of escape fiction by Stuart Woods. This exciting novel pulls the reader in with a fast-paced story that includes murder, mystery, and love. Stuart Woods provides the reader with sufficient information to keep the story interesting while still leaving the reader wanting to know more. He also does an excellent job of integrating the characters and plot with the physical setting to make a truly unique story. The setting for this book is a small island off the coast of Georgia. This is where our main character Liz Barwick has escaped from her potentially dangerous husband, pro football player Bake Ramsey. After Liz has settled down in her newborn house on Cumberland Island, her memories begin to fade, but soon two murders of her close friends send Liz into a panic, and she feels her husband is trying to find her. Soon she discovers that there is no place to hide, not even on an isolated island. This book is full of expense and action, but does not suppress a hard reading level or any deep thought. I recommend this book to the exuberant reader, one that is searching for apprehension.

The one to read
If you ever thought about reading a novel written by Stuart Woods and could only pick one, this is it. This was a great suspenseful, romantic and exciting book to read. The story is wonderfully crafted and I had a hard time putting it down. It is about Liz Barwick who has run away from an abusive marriage to a football star Bake Ramsey and is hiding for fear that he is coming after her to kill her. This is an amazing book and I would recommend it to anyone.

Palindrome
An entertaining murder mystery with a twist. Stuart Woods has evolved to an excellent murder story teller. His first book Chiefs and the two that followed the same family, Run Before the Wind and Grass Roots are also excellent. His very best book to date: New York Dead is by far the best murder mystery I have ever read

Wonderful!
I already have my heart set on 3 or 4 of the cabins from the book! I was looking for something that depicted simple dwellings, not necessary for a weekend or vacation home, but potentially for a year-round residence. Some of the cabins in the book fit the bill very well and the others give many options for every kind of taste, lifestyle goal, and toterance for "roughing it." The descriptions, photos, and details were delightful and informative. I received the book on Thursday and had it completely read by Saturday and am now going back to study!

A good survey of cabins and the inspiration behind them
This is a good survey of cabins in various locations that would fit most people's idea what a cabin is in terms of size, material and use. Included for each is a description of why the cabin was build and how it's used, floor plan(s), site plan (sometimes of limited value), interior and exterior photographs; as well as a general introduction to why cabins are considered by many to be the "classic American getaway." While I might argue about the inclusion of a few of the homes, overall it's one of the better books I've seen on cabins and why they occupy a special place in the minds of some of us. The quality of the photographs and the book in general is also very good (especially considering the price of the book). It is a book for the imagination or for those considering ideas and makes no attempt to be a construction 'how to' book however. I'd also recommend the books by Tedd Benson on timber framing (if you are at all considering a timber frame), the Jim Tolpin book on cottages, and the Donald Berg books on building in the country.

SUPER IDEAS FOR SIMPLE LIVING!
If you are into the simple life and not looking for a huge, elaborate pretentious retreat, this book is for you. The cabins presented here are varied and there will surely be one here to fit even the most discriminating taste. Cozy, efficient, homey and attractively designed, there are approximately thirty designs contained in this book.

Can't you just picture yourself snuggled up inside a country cabin, set among the peace and tranquility of majestic pines abundant with wildlife, or nestled beside a gently flowing brook? The book is very well illustrated and is so intriguing the reader will not want to put it down until the final page has been read. There is something about "The Cabin" that reminds us of what is truly important in life and what is not. The designs are not overly showy or extravagant, but there is great variety ranging from rustic to modern. Whatever your preference, these cabins conjure up dreams of romantic nights, leisurely sun-drenched days and unforgettable memories. The book is definitely rated a five-star plus and highly recommended.

Quiet Beauty
This perfect blend of poetry and artistry makes a memorable reading experience for readers of any age. Susan Jeffers' illustrations not only capture the mood of the poem but also add her own unique, sometimes humorous, twist. Children will especially love looking for the animals "hidden" in the pencil drawings.

A Gift of Poetry & Beauty
Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening is Susan Jeffers' illustrated book of the Robert Frost poem. It is a beautifully illustrated book which can be enjoyed by the parent as a child sits snugly on their lap.

I think it is a book that shows a great deal of respect. It respects the intelligence of the child by introducing beautiful "adult" poetry to the young. Simultaneously it is respectful of the adult reader allowing them to read something which is jointly appealing. This is ideally how an illustrated book should be. It should have appeal to both the reader and the listener and this book is a perfect example of that.

Susan Jeffers illustrations are exquisite. She captures the quiet beauty of the woods on a snowy evening. Animals peak from behind trees and bushes watching the man and his sleigh. There is plenty to be observed by child and parent while reading this book . It will be a thrill to find and name the animals while reading the book. Every page is a work of art.

The illustrations also work to tell a story within a story providing possible explanations for why the man is in the woods on that particular evening. Children will have some fun seeing the kinds of this this old gentleman does when no one is watching.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening is a wonderful wintertime book, but will make an excellent read in any season. What a wonderful gift for an adult to make for a child, a gift of poetry and beauty.

Gorgeous, captivating
This gorgeously illustrated book with the classic Frost poem is a beautiful way to share poetry with children. When kids get older they can be introduced to deeper ideas behind the poem -- this book is a wonderful introduction to the poem, and Frost's work in general. Poetry-snobs will probably look down on this book, which is all the more reason to like it, buy it, and share it with every kid around.
