Analytical Reading Inventory: Comprehensive Assessment for All Students Including Gifted and Remedial

Analytical Reading Inventory
I have used every edition of the Analytical Reading Inventory, but this one is the best yet. Since I am a teacher educator, I find the accompanying audiotapes quite helpful--both to me and to my students. The content of the graded passages has always been real children's literature, and thus, more like real reading. There are both narrative and expository passages with different forms for pre-and post-assessments, or for comparing silent reading comprehension to oral reading comprehension. The directions for use are very reader-friendly. And, for this latest edition, the reader passages come in a separate booklet for easy use in the testing situation. I think anyone using this inventory would be well satisfied.

A great compact guide to the AIC
This inexpensive softcover guide is nicely printed and contains an excellent selection of 256 masterpieces from the AIC. The color reproductions are quite good for a book this modestly sized. Each entry is accompanied by a generous amount of illuminating text. All in all, it's perfect for your next visit to the AIC, or simply for home browsing.

Excellent Survey!
I would first like to say this is an excellent survey. I will give three reasons why it was helpful:

1. It is very well written.
2. Very informative and comprehensive.
3. Includes study questions.

1. IT IS VERY WELL WRITTEN

I've read alot of books; some being very dry, but this is not one of them. What I particularly enjoyed about this book is that it gave a survey of the end-times at a premillinial viewpoint RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING. If you where like me and didn't know alot about the end times and got all confused about the sequence of events and terms this beginning chapter gives a survey of terms and events and then, in the proceeding chapters gives a more in-depth survey of the end time events.

2. VERY IMFORMATIVE AND COMPREHENSIVE

While you read through the book and you're asking yourself different questions about the end-time events Wood anticipates them and addresses them. He doesn't assume that you already know something, he clarifies terms & events, and how it all fit's in to the over-all plan.

3. INCLUDES STUDY QUESTIONS

This was particularly helpful. The end of each chapter includes 19 study questions that add to the value of the book. The questions included are RELIVENT, and help you apprehend, understand, and remember the material.

CONCLUSION

This book does its job for giving an excellent, biblically accurate survey (among many other things) of end-time's events at a premillenial vantage point.

Learn from a master carver and teacher
Jim Sprankle, a carver of exceptional caliber, leads the reader through a step-by-step process in transforming a lifeless block of wood into a life-like work of art. No detail is left unmentioned, and the photographs provide a close-up view of the intricate carving and painting that make Sprankle's work highly prized. Every waterfowl carver should have this book in his/her personal library.

Excellent Step-by-step instructions.
The reason I really liked "Carving Bears and Bunnies" by Tom Wolfe, was the step-by-step instructions and color photographs. As a beginner they really helped me to get the proportions right on the carvings. I really enjoyed this book of Tom Wolfe's and I am hoping to get some other ones of his.

NO STRAIGHT PERSON SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO READ THIS BOOK EVER!
This book is a study of the tactics that gay men use to keep their sexual orientation hidden from their (often homophobic) co-workers. It scares me how accurate it is. Let me give you an example, I once had a male teacher who said, "I was once going out with this woman who blah, blah, blah." Well, many straight people would think, "Okay, girlfriend equals straight." But a critical reader would see that the man said, "Once!" Many openly gay men used to date women. This book mentions tactics like acting weird so that co-workers just dismiss you as asexual, emphasizing your love of sports in order to hide the fact that you're not involved with a woman, being so liberal that when you mention gay rights co-workers think you are a leftist rather than gay, etc. If straight people read this book, gay men would never be able to hide. This book was both a gift and a weapon. Some have critiqued it asking why anyone would want to study, and subconsciously encourage, men to be closeted. However, this book does talk to men about their being out in the workplace and how they did it. We need more studies like this. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. However, it could be incredibly dangerous if placed in the wrong hands.

Distressing Days of the Judges
Published in Paperback by Zondervan (1975)
Author: Leon James Wood
Amazon base price: $11.95
Average review score:

Favorite Commentary on Judges
Leon Wood has written an ideal commentary on Judges. It is solidly conservative, scholarly but not tedious or trivial, and thorough.

It's emphasis is interpretation of the text, not preaching material. Wood interprets objectively and with reason, always with reverence for the Word of God. Like most thorough commentaries, this is a reference book and not intended for popular reading, though understandable by serious laymen. Highly recommended.

Excellent history of Houston blues scene
Fans of the blues will thoroughly enjoy this outstanding book by Roger Wood and James Fraher, who spent seven years researching and interviewing folks involved with the largely "invisible" blues music scene in Houston and the surrounding area. Fraher's photographs are outstanding, and they help drive the lively text. The authors interviewed musicians, club owners, producers and many others associated with the music scene in Houston's Third Ward and the Fifth Ward. The book moves easily from clubs to ballrooms to barbecue joints, where the music first took root and is still played today. Many legendary blues musicians such as Lightnin' Hopkins, Clifton Chenier, Gatemouth Brown and others of similar rank make appearances in the text. This is a high-quality book from a production standpoint and is an incredible bargain at full price or the Amazon.com sale price.
