Terrific Hands On Book!
I bought this book for my twin niece and nephew for Christmas. They had it worn out in a month! The concept of the book is to show young children how money "travels". An example from the book shows money leaving the purse and going into the gumball machine. The book actually comes with hard cardboard "money" that can be inserted into slots on one page and retreived on the next. My nephew now tries to put money in everything! They are 2 1/2 years old and I would say this is a very appropriate book for this age level and up. I highly recommend it!

Very creative and humourous
Zany and fun sketches easy to do with ESL (English as a Second Language) classes. Each sketch covers a different grammar point or a situation (such as "The Superlative Vacuum Cleaner" "At the Dentist") and grammar, vocab and phrases are repeated and recycled throughout. Doing a skit is a fun way to get in repetition practice for fluency. Much more fun than the boring "repeat after me" syndrome that puts students to sleep. Good humour by a British, English Teaching Theatre Group. Lots of fun, highly recommended. (Do you like Monty Python?) Even has worksheets at the end of each skit to expand and reinforce the theme of each particular skit (each skit being a lesson in disguise, wrapped in humor!!). An excellent method to reinforce a point out of your normal teaching materials or to take a humor break to enliven a sagging class. Can be stretched out a little over several lessons to practice or memorise bits and pieces each day, as a supplement to another text, or can fill one full lesson easily. The skits are conveniently broken into sections, too (I, II, III etc. in the margins), for easy reference and to make sure everyone is "on the same page."

Another good book for related drama style teaching of English to foreigners (but not as good as this book) is Pinch and Ouch. It has some interesting side notes here and there that can make the practising in class of the dramas more interesting.

Gorgeous pictures; Great climber; Boring Writer
Doug Scott is known as a "pure, aesthetic" climber; he prefers a simple climb with a few friends, rather than a seige of 100 sherpas and 1000 oxygen bottles. He has also led an amazing life. Therefore, I really wanted to like this book.

The pictures are fantastic, but the problem with this book is Scott's writing. He is terrible at conveying what it really feels like to be way up in the freezing and isolated Himalaya, or hanging from a vertical rock.

A great writer like Jon Krakaur or Joe Simpson can spend pages explaining how their fingers were numb; their bladders were full, but it was too cold to do anything about it; the wind slammed the tent against their faces, etc., so you know what it really feels to spend a shivering night up in the mountains. In contrast, Scott will say, "and so we spent the night on the mountain and it was really cold. So, the next day......." The writing is cold [no pun intended], and rather boring.

For readers interesting in great mountaineering writing, I would recommend Into Thin Air by Jon Krakaur; Touching the Void by Joe Simpson and/or The Last Step by Rick Ridgeway, all well written. They cover less geographical ground than Scott, but they are all great reads.

One of my favorite photographic volumes to date
This is not a paperback. Nor is it a hard-cover. Rather, it is a coffee table book measuring 12" x 9.5". With this in mind, I can fully excuse Scott for filling 70% of most pages with stunning photos, and the rest with text. This is not "a read".

Not only does this volume aid in picking out lines on various large peaks, but it shows Scott as he truly is: an introspective hippie with a physique made for moutaineering. It stands to reason then, that Scott picks very hard and interesting lines on mountains all over the world, from snow and ice to big-walls, to high altitude.

If you are a mountaineer, you should have two books on your coffee table. This one, and Chris Bonington's "Mountaineer" in the same format. Then your friends might just understand why you climb.

Majestic Mountains
Doug Scott was capable of taking me to a place I have never been before (for now). His writings skills may not be Hemmingway (nor mine), but in combination with the photographs, this book made my heart race with passion. My love for the mountains was established way before I read this book, but the book rekindled the flame. Unlike INTO THIN AIR's Jon Krakauer, Doug Scott is the superman of climbers. While you are reading, scenes appear, places with such beauty and excitement glare into your eyes and mind. Hey a picture is worth a thousand words. Doug Scott made this book a true LIFES adventure.

Experience the book and take a trip to the top of a mountain,

O

Please make the moving parts sturdier!!
We have bought 5 of Ken Wilson-Max's books--2 of the titles twice over because they fell apart badly. As much as our 2-1/2 year old son loves the stories, pictures and movable parts, the moving parts lasted average of 3 readings before they came apart. Only if Mr. WIlson-Max could come up with ways to reinforce those moving parts so that they will last long enough to pass the books down to our infant son . . . I would be happy to buy all his titles over again for our younger son, if a new version with sturdier moving parts became available.

Great for church or the car!
This book is great for when we need to have our children- ages one and three- entertain themselves quietly. It is perfect for church and its small size allows me to keep it in my purse or diaper bag for other times. There are a lot of parts for them to move or connect with each other. However, I do agree that the parts are not very durable and we are now on our second copy of the book- but it is well worth the money!

Little Green Tow Truck
We have the 4 -7 year old version and our grandchildren love it. It's a bit too fragile for the young kids so we are ordering a replacement because they use it so much.

Cool Book, but not very sturdy
Okay, maybe my 2 year old is a bruiser, but this book just didn't make the "tough enough" test - which is too bad because he really liked it. In fact, I've tried to toss our mangled copy a couple of times and he always rescues it for one more read. The story is cute, I just wish someone could design an interactive book that can handle little fingers pulling and pushing

Great, real-life fun
This book is a lot of fun for our son (age 2 1/2). He happened to have it in his lap the other day while we passed a real-life fire surrounded by fire trucks. His book came to life before our eyes. Definitely a winner!

My 18-month-old loves this book!
OK well maybe the water hose is torn and the door to the fire truck is frayed but this book is still my son's favorite. At a time when you want kids to get really excited about books -- most other books just don't get them involved in the story like this one does. We have to read the Big Red Fire Truck together at least three times before he will go to bed. And he loves that he opens the doors and he makes the fire truck go. Our current book may be falling apart -- but it is worth getting a second. A great book!

Great book concept - poor execution
While my 2.5 year old daughter loves this book, I am afraid it will not last very long. The interactive gas pump, oil dip stick, and other features are not constructed for a child to use. The cardboard bends easily, and the slots to stick the devices in are not readily usable, even for an older child. Hopefully upon future printings the publisher will upgrade the above.

You need this book
Our 21 month old just adores this book - and it's so appealing we can understand why. She loves all the activity - filling the gas tank and turning the steering wheel. And she has learned all kinds of new words and concepts. And almost as important - it occupies her for whole minutes at a time!

Fun Hands-on reading!
Children learn best by doing and doing is what they get to do in this book. With the turn of each page the children anxioulsy await what task they will do next. My 5 year old loves filling the tank, driving it along the road, and running it through the car wash.

Design flaw in book
Oddly enough, the letter in this book does not go all the way through the final mail slot into Max's mail bag, which is the reason I am giving it 3 stars. At first I thought the book might be defective, but it really doesn't appear to be. Max's Money is much better and I would give it 5 stars. My son did like the little letter enclosed in this book though.

An excellent book for many ages
Our 15 month old son loves this book. He especially enjoys taking the letter out of the envelope and "reading" the letter to himself. He also enjoys watching me push the letter through all of the different slots. I believe this book will interest him through his pre-school years as he learns more about our mail system and as he becomes more skilled with his fingers and can push the letter through the slots himself. So far the book is very durable. I can't wait to get more books by this author.

Almost 5!
Top-level robotics research involves many disciplines: kinematics, dynamics, control, and programming. A growing number of researchers see the key to unifying these diverse fields in robot algorithms -mathematical descriptions linking perception and motion that can operate in the real world to achieve goals. This collection features articles by top-level scientists in theoretical computer science, computational geometry, robotics, perception, artificial intelligence, and mechanical engineering. They present robotics as a field of computation applied to the real world much more than just controlling robot arms! A very technical collection valuable to both researchers and students.

K is for Kwanzaa--Great Book
Ford managed to teach about the Kwanzaa in an interesting way to children, and was not stereotypical. This is a great book to teach cultural diversity in the classroom, because it does not belittle any race or culture. Read it, and you'll see!!
