A continuation of the great Christian heritage of our nation
Once I read The Light and The Glory with my children, I knew that their education in American history would not be complete without this book. We were not disappointed. This book continues the narration of the great Christian heritage of the USA. As the settlers struggled to carve out a nation and our fledgling country grappled with issues between ourselves, our neighboring countries, and the Native American nation within our new boundaries, faith in God prevailed. The evidence for perseverence in faith is an inspiration to my children when they face daily struggles that are not as monumental. "Review" questions stimulate deep thought about the moral responsibility each one of us has to our country and our God. As with the first book, this is a great character building tool for our future citizens.

A Buried Treasure In Need Of Being Dug Up
It's a tragedy this book is out of print, for 1998's Generally Accepted Accounting Principles were literally the most entertaining that have every been promulgated. 1998 was a sparkling and zany year for the Financial Accounting Standards Board, blazing with comic relief and rhetorical slapstick. Several companies took full advantage of 1998's free-wheeling GAAP atmosphere to up their earnings and put liabilities off the books; it was a banner year for such doings, thanks to FASB GAAP pronouncements. If you are lucky enough to find this valuable volume in a second-hand store or garbage sale, buy it immediately. It's a buried treasure that needs to be dug up.

Factual & down-to earth: excellent reference book
For inventors & innovators, this book contains everything needed to answer detailed preliminary questions on the main aspects of human power and its application on land, air and sea. The only drawback was that the section on flying was a little short and the section on cycling a little long, but the cycling stats fed into the flying machines anyway so no real loss. Plenty of charts, stats, references on air and water resistance, human horsepower, peak performance issues, actual test results. Very impressive collection of information, well worth the price.

Implementing a Quality Management System
Published in CD-ROM by Computational Mechanics ()

Average review score:

Valuable to consultants and for SQA libraries
This CD ROM is an excellent collection of articles on interpreting quality standards as they relate to software development, developing an implementation plan, and implementing and managing the system.

What I like is collection of experiences and lessons learned from implementation in real companies, and the two chapters that show that even small organizations can establish quality management systems. I also like the common theme, which is the competitive advantage that accrues from having a quality management system in place.

Much of the material is over four years old, but with the exception of ISO 9000 this isn't a problem because the implementation and management portions are still valid. The lessons learned are equally valid because the ones described in the various articles are the ones that will crop up in any implementation. This is a function of organizational change more than particulars of a particular quality management system approach.

The one article that I most liked described an industrial production approach to software and the parallels to manufacturing. Since this book was written SEI's product-line software engineering approach seems to incorporate many of the ideas expressed by the article's authors. I also found the article titled "Making Software Measurement Work" interesting and filled with advice on how to take this important element of a quality management system from theory to practice.

Having the material on CD ROM is, in my opinion, an added bonus because it can be searched and is much more convenient to take as reference material on consulting assignments where much of this material can prove invaluable as cited work in findings and recommendations deliverables.

Get me bike!
I've been to Ireland twice and when I go I never have a hotel reservation, a set itinerary or a care in the world. I immerse myself in the culture and people of Ireland and go where the locals/journey takes me.

Before I go I like to read about similar journeys through the greatest country on the planet. Mr. Wilson has captured what it's like to travel through the countryside, cities and coastal villages of Ireland. It's not just the scenery that endears people to the emerald isle... it's the people, their sense of humor, outlook on life and how they spend their day.

If you want a book that puts you in the middle of an Irish pub with a "three-pint-buzz", listening to traditional music with perma-grin on your face... then grab Mr. Wilson's tale of his Irish Journey. A great read for the plane ride over.

A truly magical experience
It is unbelievable that Wilson's amazing and moving novel is out of print. I just think this is one of the most profound, intelligent, and in-memory-lasting pieces of work. Love and Nause is the kind of book any writer (among which I am) would like to produce. J. Krumec

You Cannot Go Wrong With This Anthology!!!
With stories like "Ferryman" (Eric Brown), "The White Stuff" (Peter F. Hamilton & Graham Joyce), and "A Night on Bare Mountain" (Graham Charnock), anthologies don't get any better than this. My only quibble is with the experimental narrative "Thirteen Views of a Cardboard City"(William Gibson) which rounds out the volume with a whimper, not a bang. Otherwise, this is Hugo & Nebula territory.
