O. Henry: The Legendary Life of William S. Porter.

So interesting you'll forget it's nonfiction!
At the conclusion of his book "A Twist at the End," Steven Saylor highly recommends this biography of O. Henry. I do, too.

This book sheds so much light on both William Sydney Porter (O. Henry) and American life in the late 19th century and early 20th century. O'Connor meticulously documents his sources in a way that never interferes with his story. About three-fourths of the way through the book, I suddenly realized that this non-fiction work is far more interesting than the novel ("A Twist at the End") that Saylor wrote about one part of O. Henry's life.

If you enjoy biographies, try to find a used copy of this book.

Practical references for operative neurosurgery
These books are the most commonly referred books for operative neurosurgery in my office. It covers most of the commonly performed operations. Experts in the field describe the details and tricks in how to make an neurosurgical operation successful and complication free. They are particularly useful for young neurosurgeons as practical references. On the other hand, they are also useful for experienced neurosurgeons who want incorporate others experience and advices to build up their own techniques.

Schaaf's Fox Talbot
Larry Schaaf has put together an absolute benchmark of a book. To all of you who sat in the "college survey of art history," saw the 2" by 2" Fox Talbot image "The Soliloquy of the Broom" and wondered what the fuss was about; see this book. To all of you photographers who secretly wonder if photography is really art; see this book. One hundred images are reproduced with (no kidding) breathtaking quality and nuance. Each image is accompanied by a very readable account of how the image was produced and enough descriptive detail about the original image to satisfy an archeologist.

If you are a photo researcher or archivist; read Schaaf's notes on "The photographic artifact as historical map" (p. 22). It is clear, it is complete, it is definitive. I wish all histories and text books could read like this.

Picasso and Braque: Pioneering Cubism

One of the best art books money can buy
Your art-book dollar can hardly go further than here, with zillions of beautiful color reproductions of Cubist paintings, running the gamut from the early solid days to the dissolved Analytic days to the flat Synthetic years, and even on to some works where the name Cubism cannot really apply. There is also a fascinating timeline with excerpts from correspondence between Picasso, Braque, and their friends, which gives a very personal glimpse into their lives as they carried out this strange artistic journey together. Very often Cubism books feel that because of the generally dull color of Cubist painting, they can get away with black and white reproductions, but you cannot get a real sense of a painting without seeing it in color. Short of a round-the-world trip to every museum in which these paintings are kept, there is no better education you can get on Cubism today.

A long term prairie wetlands research project
As a result of decades of conservation research we now understand the basic underlying value and fundamental necessity of sustaining prairie wetland ecologies for the overall well-being of the ecosystem, with implications for wildlife habitation, and the impact of human activity (including agriculture) upon natural resources. Henry R. Murkin, Arnold G. van der Valk, and William R. Clark have successfully collaborated in summarizing the findings of the Marsh Ecology Research Program (MERP) in Prairie Wetland Ecology: The Contribution Of The Marsh Ecology Research Program, which also reflects the contributions from ten field experts. This comprehensive and long term prairie wetlands research project was a joint effort of Duck Unlimited Canada and the Delta Waterfowl and Wetlands Research Station. Prairie Wetland Ecology is a superb and highly recommended introduction to prairie wetland ecology research in general, and MERP in particular, as well as providing a superbly informative background for further ecosystem research.

Primitivism in 20th Century Art: Affinity of the Tribal and the Modern

Huge but good
This was the text for a class in Primitivism in Modern Art. It is a detailed chronicle of how "Primitive" art influenced the artists of the early 20th century, such as Picasso and Gaughin. It has great pictures showing primitive art that these artists saw in museums at the time, that influenced paintings directly. Beautiful to just have.

Fairly Good, No Glaring Red Flags
The book was good overall. Gives more background information than some other books on Prince Henry and his times. Covers Henry's early years, preparation at Sagres, his sanctioned explorations, trade that brought wealth, Islam/Christian relations, various people groups/nations, lives of others Henry came into contact with and hired, sailing/navigation/ship technology and its important role. These events were not covered in great depth but were integrated quite well; it read smoothly and simply. Incidently, I was glad that Henry's faith was covered fairly; it could have sketched his personality a little better though (i.e. his tenacity and perseverance).

The only glaring issue I saw (which I see in a lot of historical books) is that it perpetuates the idea that folks back then thought the earth was really flat. They knew it to be a sphere: see works of Eratothenes, St. Augustine, Bede, Columbus, and other works of educated men of the 14th Century.

Overall, the book was good and kept the attention of our homeschooled 4 and 6 year old.
