SPADA - Anthology of Swordsmanship
SPADA is a journal that contains some of most current ideas on historical swordsmanship by a number of the field's leading researchers. As a student of historical swordsmanship myself, I think it is an excellent step in the right direction for the progression of this school of study.

As far as the contents of the book are concerned, my hat goes off to the editor, Stephen Hand, for distilling such a diverse, and yet interesting range of papers from the vast array of excellent treatises available.

The book also features some interesting reports on some of the most recent activities undertaken in the WMA community. This provides the reader with a very good 'big picture' perspective into what advances are being made in what fields, and an appreciation for the vast range of people who are now interested in historical swordsmanship.

With regards to it's practicality, the book caters for many different tastes - whether you are interested in the finesse of renaissance fencing, or simply a medieval re-enactor using the trusty 'sword and shield' method. SPADA provides useful insights and a greater understanding of historical methods of fighting.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in gaining a greater appreciation of historical swordsmanship, and anyone who is curious to know what the swordmanship community out there is doing. I rate it as a 'must have' item, and I look forward to more SPADA releases in the future.

cheers

A fascinating history of Texas
Taming Texas: Captain William T. Sadler's Lone Star Service is a fascinating history of Texas as revealed through the biography of William Turner Sadler (1797-1884). Sadler was one of the leading pioneers of 19th century Texas and participated in most of the major events of the period. He migrated to Texas from Georgia in 1835 to become a farmer. He soon found himself in command of the ranger company that built Fort Houston, served as a private in the battle of San Jacinto, was active in quelling the Cordova Rebellion, and became a leader in the campaign against Chief Bowles and the Cherokees. Eventually Sadler served as a representative in both the Republic Congress and the Texas state legislature. During the Civil War, at the age of 66, he served in Terrell's Texas Cavalry. Highly recommended reading, Taming Texas is informative, engaging, offers a unique perspective on Texas history, and is enhanced with photographs, roster lists, and line-drawn illustrations.

The Essence of the Utah Wilderness Lands
A worthy anthology of short stories paying tribute and articulating the spirituality of the wild public domain lands of Utah. Anyone who has spent time hiking, camping, or otherwise experiencing the unique deserts and mountains will enjoy and relate to the stories shared by contributors who are various well-known icons from diverse backgrounds promoting a land conservation ethic. The good writing really makes the places come alive. This book was prepared in an effort to tell the story and promote the protection of the wild lands of Utah. I have experienced living in and enjoying these lands first hand. The book hits the mark - it inspires a similar awe of the actual natural experience of these lands even in a mining engineer like myself. The book reinforces the true reality that many of these lands deserve strict protection for the enjoyment of those who seek wilderness, solitude, and a temporary recess from the insane.

A complete vision of Critical Care Medicine
The book has a very interesting review of the princicipal topics of Critical Care Medicine. The chapters of Trauma, are very important for the knowledge of the medical team. The part of phisiopatology is the key in the understanding the principal problems of a patient critical ill. Chapter of IMAGIN is the basis of others parts of the book , in spite of the fact that , if we are able to evaluate the information of rx, all type of scans, we give a good patient care . The information about de manegement of childs is very interesting. Here are the chapters, I like more: Cardio Coronary-Cerebral Resuscitation Pediatric Resuscitation Invasive and Noninvasive Monitoring Rapid Identification of Coronary Artery Insufficiency Medical Toxicology in Critical Care Physiologic Response To Injury Acute Pain in the Intensive Care Unit Intensive Care Management of the Injured Child Burn Care and Inhalation Injury Trauma to the Pregnant Patient Trauma Care of the Elderly IMAGING Cytokines in Disease Regulation of Gene Expression INFECTIOUS DISEASE Malaria and Other Tropical Infections in the Intensive Care Unit Antimicrobial Resistance ENDOCRINOLOGY, METABOLISM, NUTRITION, PHARMACOLOGY

One of the best sources to date about the life/work of Goyen
Through the many letters reprinted in this volume, Robert Phillips allows us a glimpse into the world of a writer, who for most of his career suffered the indignity of indifference and the bitterness of rejection; only within the past two decades has Goyen's work received much critical attention. The book is divided into 7 sections, beginning with 1932, when Goyen recieved his B.A. in Literature from Rice Institute, until 1983, when the author died of lymphoma. Each section contains a chronology of letters that at first glance reads like a travelogue, a reflection of Goyen's inability to reconcile with the idea of place. Many of the pages reveal how he would settle somewhere new, begin to write, start to feel hemmed in, and move to another destination. Still, even when in California or New York, he never lost touch with those he most cared for, and he always considered Texas his home. The lyricism that echoes throughout his fiction and poetry is also heard amidst his letters. There are passionate notes to Katherine Anne Porter, whith whom he reportedly had a two-year relationship, comments to novelist Daniel Stern made during the time that Goyen was his editor at McGraw-Hill, as well as evidence of both the creative euphoria and crippling depression that he experienced throughout his life. Due to an estrangement over the publication of his masterpiece, The House of Breath (1950), there is not much correspondence with family members, but perhaps that is just as well since Phillips' aim was to focus on "letters about his writing, the writing of others, and art and literature in general " (xii) . The result then, is an autobiographical picture never before seen within the modest amount of Goyen scholarship that currently exists. We learn of an early military experience that almost cost him his sanity, his resentment at being called a Southern writer, and the writers he considered most influential, including Eliot, Pound, Frost, Welty, Porter, and Flaubert. Robert Phillips has done an amazing job in editing this epistolary volume. He offers us Wiliiam Goyen as friend, lover, and writer, whose raw, human vision is made clearer through his own words. This is an indispensable source for anyone wishing to learn more about a man whose importance to the canon of modern American literature has yet to be realized.

Wordsworth and the Victorians (Oxford Authors (Cloth))
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (1998)
Author: Stephen Charles Gill
Amazon base price: $65.00
Average review score:

Gill's Wordsworth and the Victorians
This is a much needed book that shows Wordsworth's influence on Victorian writers and other artists both before and after his death. Gill has painstakingly researched his subject and shows that the later Victorians looked to WW for inspiration and guidance but did not revere him as a god. Their assessment of Wordsworth helped to propel interest in the poet in the 20thC. This book has been long in the making and is a fabulous contribution to Victorian studies and Wordsworth studies.

seminal overview of the anthroprogenic use of fire by man.
This book caused me to think of the totality of the sciences blindly lurching forward to stuydy the effects of 40,000 years of unrestrained fire use while that use changes.
