Use as Laboratory
I teach three levels of Systems Engineering and Architecture courses at the Naval Postgraduate School. I have now used this book for 2 years for the Labs.

The students each study and make presentations on the different case studies; relating there results to the Systems Engineering Process and the Architecture Hueristics.

Last Quarter, one class voted this book the best book of the quarter.

No fluff here!
The Author, William Jay, was an accomplished architect and preacher second only to Spurgeon. The old-style formal English in which he writes takes a bit getting used to but that is the only down side of this book. The author takes one verse per day from the Bible and writes about it. His commentary is very deep and very inspirational.
I would not recommend this book for new Christians but rather for those who are well read and looking for something to really sink their teeth into. William Jay is not only inspirational but he drives home important messages from Scripture that the reader may have overlooked in the past. I highly recommend this book!

Excellent for Dramaturgs
Recently, I was the dramaturg for A Midsummer Night's Dream. One of the primary jobs of the dramaturg is to research the production history of the play, and as my teacher once told me, "There's no point in re-inventing the wheel." This being said, Our Moonlight Revels is a great place to start.

Beginning with the original production and moving to the present, Williams explores several productions of this classical play. He hits all the major productions, such as Peter Brook's 1970 production, Beerholm Tree's 1900 production, and productions by Kean, Vestris, and Reinhardt. The book is divided by theory rather than chronologically. There are chapters devoted to the Wedding-play myth, Modernism and Post-Modernism, Scenic images of the "Empire." Of course no book, can be able to explore every single production of A Midsummer Night's Dream in the last four hundred years, but Williams' book gives one landmark productions that can be used for further research. One book can't tell you everything, you have to do some research on your own, but Williams at least can point you in the right direction.

The book contains several production photos both in color and in black and white.

Fairy Tale Princess-Mental Giant
I loved this book as a child, so I had to find it online for my own kids. In this tale, the princess faces problems that vary between tricky and seemingly impossible. She becomes a heroine by keeping her head and using her mind to figure out the answer to each dilemma with grace, logic, and ingenuity, which is a valuable lesson for girls AND boys. In addition, the world that Jay Williams creates for his story is rich in mythic settings and creatures that really bring it to life.

Fairly Good, No Glaring Red Flags
The book was good overall. Gives more background information than some other books on Prince Henry and his times. Covers Henry's early years, preparation at Sagres, his sanctioned explorations, trade that brought wealth, Islam/Christian relations, various people groups/nations, lives of others Henry came into contact with and hired, sailing/navigation/ship technology and its important role. These events were not covered in great depth but were integrated quite well; it read smoothly and simply. Incidently, I was glad that Henry's faith was covered fairly; it could have sketched his personality a little better though (i.e. his tenacity and perseverance).

The only glaring issue I saw (which I see in a lot of historical books) is that it perpetuates the idea that folks back then thought the earth was really flat. They knew it to be a sphere: see works of Eratothenes, St. Augustine, Bede, Columbus, and other works of educated men of the 14th Century.

Overall, the book was good and kept the attention of our homeschooled 4 and 6 year old.

a book to make you think
Never giving answers, never really asking questions, Jay questions everything without questioning... by pulling quotes from all kinds of religious and non-religious texts, he swirls you through all kinds of "arguments". Not a book to make you believe, but a book to make you look again at the world around you. Without coming off as pure rhetoric or too "New Age", this book leaves you floating in space, not really sure which way is up. Also, don't try to read this book from cover to cover... but then again, who am I to tell you how to read it?

If Bela Bartok Wrote Poetry....
I first decided to read this volume because of the great influence poet William Jay Smith had in its production. I have become a recent fan of Smith, since I read his latest collection of poetry, The Cherokee Lottery. What impressed me about that collection was the way in which Smith was able to use poetry to illuminate a probing historical issue, the relocation of Native American tribes along the Trail of Tears, and infuse it with meaning for a contemporary American audience. Smith and his fellow translators succeed on a similar level in their work on the poetry of Gyula Illyes. Of course, Gyula Illyes is not exactly a historical figure. He only recently passed away a mere seven years ago. However, the prestige Gyula Illyes earned in his native Hungary for his inspiring poetic output certainly renders him his place in literary history. Unfortunately, much of Gyula Illyes's incredible work is unknown to American readers. Or at least it was until now, when Smith decided to tackle the task of translation and bring Gyula Illyes verses to a vibrant, colorful life for modern-day, English-speaking audiences. Now, thanks to Smith, it is possible for readers in America to become acquainted with Gyula Illyes and appreciate the struggles of the Hungarian lower-classes through the powerful, poetic vision of one of the country's most beloved citizens. Like Bela Bartok, Gyula Illyes was an instrument of the passions of the Hungarian people. And like Bartok, Gyula Illyes deserves to be remembered for many years for his amazing artistic accomplishments.
