Not Recommended for Eduacators
I am a gang and youth violence expert working with the San Diego County Office of Education, Safe Schools Unit. I have alerted many of our schools about the series of books by Stanley "Tookie" Williams. I do not recommend the purchase of this book. The content of the books are not appropriate for young people. The images of gangs are not accurate (Too much negative sterotyping). The book is written in a simplistic style that will quickly bore young students. Youth need to critically examine information not be talked down to. You may email me for alternate suggestions for gang prevention books for youth.

" It's real"
As a literacy professional and a volunteer in the Alternatives to Violence Project, I had serious questions about the Tookie books until I offered"Gangs and Self Esteem" to a incarcerated student, who read it with an intensity I had not seen before. He asked again and again where he could buy it - something I'd also never seen. I think these books are valuable. The author has credibility. The concepts and information they provide are important and the repetitions serve to underline them. The situations provoke personal stories & discussion which can be used to extend into personal writing and journals. I do think the publishers have make big mistakes. They have altered "street speech" into standard English. The photos are inappropriate and full of stereotypes. The age level seems all o ver the place. I agree that they are not for teens, but the simplicity of the language IS appropriate for older students with reading problems. I suggested to my student that he write Tookie with his ideas. In my opinion, the book company is trying to market these books to every age and condition of kids - and I wish Tookie could have more say about his audience and tailor the design decisions to them. I don't like the "pronunciation helps" in parentheses, or the "glossary". This was really "talking down". And I do think Tookie could write us a book designed for more literate kids. But hats off to everybody involved in publishing somthing we really need, even if it's not perfect.

All's Well That Ends Well

Not Quite Shakespeare's Worst
The only play Shakespeare wrote that I did not like at all was "Othello." "All's Well That Ends Well" was never that popular. It lacks the hilarious tone of "The Comedy of Errors," the superb construction of "Much Ado About Nothing," or the profound messages of "The Merchant of Venice." Also, we can very well be in two minds of what to think of Bertram's rejection of Helena. The characters are not that convincing, and much of the humour is based on bad taste. But the play is not quite a flop. There are moments of suspense. There is some delightful comedy (especially when Bertram chooses to stay in battle rather than go home and marry Helena). And at times, Helena is memorable. I would not make time to read this play, but then it's not a waste of time either.

A Course in Business Statistics

A book that makes statistics even more "sadistic"
Unfortunately my opinion of this text is that, as a teaching guide, it introduces the subject matter in as confusing way as possible and is rather unclear in its treatment of formulas. Its best attribute is its exercises and the tables in the appendices; however, it was often easier to use outside sources to learn how to work the problems then to work through the confusing text

Faith on the Line
Published in Paperback by Chariot Victor Books (1999)
Authors: Charles Colson and Barbara Williams
Amazon base price: $9.99
Average review score:

Faith on the Line
The problems Colson addresss are those that fundamentally effect not only our country, but any civilized society. While both precise & strong in its brevity, this book serves as an overview of the issues. Colson writes to show us the problem is not only within society, but also within the Church itself. Overall, the delivery is simple, yet challenging. "Faith on the Line" is more than a title, it is a call to action. How many of us truly put our faith on the line? How many are ready to 'dare to be different, dare to be Christian"?

Lacking
The fact that I seem to be statistically challenged may be the cause of a clouded review; however, I feel that this book leaves out a great deal of information pertinent to finding your way from point A to B. The layout also leaves much to be desired. Examples frequently correspond to other examples in previous pages so that you are constantly flipping pages and trying to sort out what's what. I am now halfway through this book (and still clueless) and between all members of my class, we have found multiple typo errors. The errors are not just simple misspellings- most of them have been major errors in formulas. I had hoped to learn and understand much more of what's in the book- granted part of that is the instructor's responsibility, but the book truly seems lacking.

Stroke Survivors (Jossey-Bass Health)
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (1994)

Amazon base price: $25.00

Stroke Survivors
Stroke Survivors is a worthy contribution to the field of caregiving and recovery from one of life'most devastating experience. In its first pages, the reader is drawn into the riveting experience of several personal accounts chronicling the inner experience of the stroke victim--the pain, the terror, the confusion, the disbelief, and the sudden isolation of having speech, organized thought, and/or controlled movement stripped away.

The problem with the book is its lack of focus. Written by a stroke survivor and two clinicins, the book is forever changing from voice to voice in a rather meandering style that leaves the reader a little disoriented. The central focus ofthe book is perhaps too wide-angled: Is this a book (as the title implies) about stroke survivors? If so, then why not make the case studies easier to follow, less laden with social work jargon. Is it an academic work? Then why not clarify the research questions and draw conclusions that are a little crisper? Is it a book about caregivers? Then why not draw a more clear portrait about one or several caregiver? The book is actually filled with helpful bits of information. But its meandering style and lack of focus make much of that information inaccessible to the reader.
