Captivating, I couldn't put it down. Very well researched and extremely well written and easy to read. Any student of the U-boat was would do well to read this sad chapter in the history of the Ubootwaffe. It really gets into the mindset of the crews. Human nature is a fascinating beast and Martial Justice is a great study in the good and bad in us all.

Completely fascinating. Most Americans don't even know we had hundreds of camps all over the U.S. that housed German POWs. We study all the heros and villains of the war in broad terms, and tend to forget that there were thousands of little events that to the people involved were every bit as important as the publicized events. The U.S. Army executed a group of Germans who did what the American Army itself would have expected of its soldiers, and hushed up if American POWs did exactly the same thing. This is a frightening study of how the military bureaucracy is a law unto its own purposes. "The Killing of Corporal Kunz" and "Extreme Justice" are further fascinating looks at the same kind of situation.

Martial Justice: The Last Mass Execution in the United States is a compelling account of a conflict between honor and the fight against tyranny. A historical tragedy of German Submariner POW Werner Drechsler who was willing to sacrifice the bond of comradeship to save his homeland. On the other side, seven fellow German Submariner POWs who see Drechsler as a traitor. The actions taken by the seven leads them down a twisted wartime legal path that ends with their execution after the surrender of Germany. The book examines the strong bonds of loyalty shared amongst these young men. A close-knit fraternity which became stronger through adversity. The many questions left unanswered by history begs the reader to examine the tarnished legacy left behind by the prisoner of war experience in the United States.

I am a fan of Richard Whittingham's work and normally would have eagerly anticipated his new RITES OF AUTUMN. But my life had become far from normal. I was three days past very invasive day-long surgery, half way through a 23 day hospital stay. Despite a lot of drugs, I was hurting like hell when my wife brought in RITES after dinner. Here is how good that book is. Since the operation I was exhausted by 9PM and, after more medication, feel asleep soon after. But this night I began the book and stayed up until 2PM finishing it -- literally feeling no pain. I paid for this splurge the next day without regret. Then September 11th happened on my TV and I got so depressed I read RITES again. Again I was carried away, now from America's tragedy. Obviously, I am grateful for this wonderful work and recommend it to anyone interested in out nation's rich traditions. Like Whittingham's other work, RITES OF AUTUMN is far more than a sports book.

The introduction by Roger Stauback is worth the price of the book. Anyone who had anything from a mild interest or upward in college football would love this book. The author knows his subject well. This and his other sports books express his interest and love of the "game". After reading this you will want to look at some of his previous books, especially "What a game they played".

WHittingham has his finger on the pulse of the Windy City. From his two excellent police novels "My Kind of Town" and "State Street" to his sports books, he knows Chicago. This is a must for Whitesox fans as well as his Chicago Bears history.

This book is a great one for catching up on the Sox' history throughout the eras. From the Black Sox to the Go-Go Sox to the Big Hurt. It contains almost everything a fan would need to know and would want to know. It did not include all the great players career stats but does with a few. Overall, a thick book but a great and easy read.

This is a wonderful book written by Bears of every football era. I've read it many times over and will continue to do so. If you like the Chicago Bears, you will enjoy this book. I can't recommend it high enough. 6 stars!

great book. a redskins fan should not be without it.

Stories about great athletes that were famous and not so famous. Each of the chapters talks about an athlete that contributed to the sport in very unique ways. After reading it, I wanted to know more about some of the characters that were great athletes and times very humorous. It's a book I will re-read and recommend highly.

THIS BOOK IS A COLLECTION OF INTERVIEWS AND SHORT STORIES ABOUT SOME OF THE LEGENDARY GIANTS OF THE EARLY ERA AND MOSTLY OF THE GOLDEN ERA OF THE LATE 50'S AND EARLY 60'S. IT IS A FASCINATING COLLECTION ALONG WITH SOME GREAT PICTURES. I REALLY LOVED THIS BOOK, EVEN THOUGH I AM A BROWNS FAN. A BOOK THAT SHOULD BE A MUST READ FOR GIANT AND THE NOSTALGIC FOOTBALL FAN.

Whittingham's book gives a wealth of information on one of the most historic franchises in sports history. Great pictures, stories, players, coaches, and statistics add up to give the whole picture of the Chicago Bears. Even though they are not too good right now, they have a history that cannot be matched by too many teams in the NFL or any other sport for that matter. If you want an in-depth look at the Bears, get Richard Whittingham's book.

I know Eddie personally, and I find that at 80 years old he continues to work as hard as most people in their 30s. He is a driven man, whose ambition is boundless.

This recent book is a swift read and covers the major events in Eddie's life in a well researched and balanced way. From the heights of two separate fortunes to the depths of two jail stints, it is really an amazing story. The most amazing part is that it is true. Eddie Gilbert is still making history today as a very, very successful real estate investor. Everything he touches turns to gold.

I recommend reading the book, not for its literary merits which are very modest, but for the truly extraodinary story of the many lives of Eddie Gilbert.

This well written book is a facinating review of a very intelligent man that made some poor decisions early in his career and spent most of his life redeeming himself to the public and his friends. It is wonderful to read about his ultimate success in overcoming the adversity of the press, the legal system and the cutthroat Wall Street environment. The book illustrates that it is possible to have been in jail and to be financially successful and respected by family and business associates alike in the end.

The author did a excellent job of researching the material that has resulted in a very factual, objective narrative... but it still reads like a novel!

I would strongly recommend purchasing this book, particularly if you are a business leader that must make people judgements.

This book served as a wonderful introduction to this great football franchise and some of the men who got it done on the field. Each chapter is a self-contained autobiography of a great man who wore the Giants jersey. The men like Sam Huff, Frank Gifford, Tom Landry, Dan Reeves, Pat Summerall, Rosie Greer, Andy Robustelli and others who helped the Giants to dominate the NFL in much of the late 50's are both legends of the game and leaders of men. I was unfamilar with much of the older Giants history. This book made me very proud to be a Giants fan.

I gained a tremendous appreciation for the contribution the Mara family has made to the NFL in bringing football into the modern era. Thank you to both Tim and Wellington Mara.
