BEST COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF JOHN WESLEY I HAVE EVER SEEN.
As the daughter and grandaughter of Methodist ministers I have read this two volume set on the study of John Wesley, his theories, his thinking and how he employed all of his beliefs. Dr. David Naglee shows that he has total insight into John Wesley and how John Wesley's theology and philosophy is still the force behind religion today. A totally excellent book for every person to read especially those going into the ministry or for the lay person wanting to learn more about John Wesley and his ministry

Grasping for the Heart of John Wesley's Message
Theodore W. Jennings, Jr. has written a superb reflection on a critical -- and often overlooked -- aspect of John Wesley's driving purpose. The pursuit of living the Holy Life was central to everything that John Wesley sought after. Taking his cue directly from Scripture, Wesley held out the interests of the poor as the measure by which Christian living was to be judged. Jennings challenges us to discover what Wesley held so dear, as he pursued his mission of "spreading Scriptural holiness throughout the land."

Wesley came to the end of his earthly life convinced that he had failed in his purpose -- to make true disciples for Christ. Why did he think this?

Jennings uses Wesley's own writings and comments to show how the poor were central to Wesley's understanding of Scriptural holiness. He shows how by that standard the Wesleyan movements during Wesley's lifetime -- and certainly since! -- have failed to be true to Wesley's vision and method. Indeed, when one comes face-to-face with Wesley's ideas in these pages, one cannot help but note that the actions and inactions of Wesley's followers, then and now, are often more of outright betrayal than fidelity to the purpose.

Jennings presents for us a prophetic call to rediscover Wesley. Not the John Wesley of lore -- but the Wesley of relentless and driving compassion for and with the poor. Like all good prophesy, this book both calls us to face our failings, and challenges us to begin anew!

The True Man of God
The life of John Wesley is nothing short of amazing. He carried the message of Christ far and wide during his lifetime and preached to thousands. I have read this and his Forty-Four Sermons, published in 1977 by Methodist Publishing House. Currently out of print. At a time in the modern church where obedience to the Gospel of Christ is optional and Grace cheap, study the works of Wesley and see what happens when a man is 'really' converted to the truth. Examine the evidence of a heart ignited by the Fire of the Holy Spirit and a lifetime of discipleship to the cross. If your own heart is not moved by his great man of God, then perhaps you need to be reminded that true Faith produces obedience and life of service to Christ. Wesley called the churches to repentance and proved to them that Grace was NOT license, but the Power to transform. True followers of Christ walk in the Newness of Life, overcoming the world by Faith, and daily presenting themselves a 'living' sacrifice to God, holy and acceptable, which is their reasonable service. Wesley, like many preachers of his time, taught that to Make a 'continual' practice out of sin after coming to a knowledge of the truth, was a mockery of God and an Insult to the Spirit of Grace. "He that doeth righteousness is righteous." Was one of his most beloved passages. Which he used to prove his point time and again as he traveled the countryside proclaiming the Gospel. He shatters the modern doctrine of, 'Jesus obeyed for me' or better stated that somehow 'imputed righteousness', means the believer is excused from obedience. Like all true men of God, Wesley took the scriptures at face value and 'did not' try to read in an excuse for sin. The New Birth hit him like a lightening blot from above and he took that message to the world. The RESULTS speak for themselves. Read about his life and be inspired to obey the Lord.

Bruce Hindmarsh's biography will surprise most readers.
Bruce Hindmarsh goes far beyond the common understanding of John Newton to describe a gospel servant who began as an adolescent sailing with his father in the merchant marine. Later, he lived a blasphemous and destructive life after being impressed into the British navy, punished as a deserter and sent to service on a slave ship. Even after his earliest conversion he engaged in the slave trade, ultimately as a captain, before quitting that business which he found disgusting. He found new employment, new friends in the Evangelical community, and with his young wife, Mary, at first settled in Liverpool. His independent biblical and theological studies set him on a course that tied him closely with members of the English Evangelical movement but ultimately resulted in his ordination as a clergyman in the Church of England. Hindmarsh has carefully detailed Newton's growth over many years toward maturity and service as an Anglican parish minister and a preacher often mistaken for a Methodist because of his exuberance. Of course, Newton wrote hundreds of hymns for his parishioners to sing in worship services. The most famous today is "Faith's Review and Expectation," or "Amazing Grace." This is a scholarly book, well worth the price if you're serious about understanding Newton's theology, his rich and admirable service as a parish priest, his personal warmth and commitment to the people he served, and his historical significance as an Anglican who was a sort of bridge between his own church and the broad Evangelical movement during his long and productive life. Hindmarsh has done a great job of humanizing Newton; after reading this fine book I admire Newton so much because of the rich, committed life he lived for many years after he found conversion and quit the slave trade.

Immpeccable scholarly material
Outler has a thorough knowledge of Wesley's life, teachings, and impact. He does more than present a summary of that, but he gives insight as well. One of the greatest is of Wesley's grasp of both Protestant and Catholic theologies, that creates something new (or old, i.e. in the 'primitive' church).

Classic life of Wesley
There have been many biographies written on John Wesley. I believe I am correct in saying that this one by Luke Tyerman is considered one of the best, a classic. My own copy is the sixth edition three volume set (total of 1857 pages) published by Hodder & Stoughton of London in 1890. Tyerman's approach is to cover Wesley's long life of ministry year by year chronologically. Tyerman is an admirer of Wesley and biased in his favor, but does occasionally comment upon points where he takes some issue with Wesley. Perhaps the strength of the biography is Tyerman's exhaustive knowledge of not only Wesley's life, but also of the history and various personalities of early Methodism and Methodists of Great Britain. Thus, there is much anecdotal and supporting information of not only Wesley personally, but of his associates in the early Methodist movement.
