A Fantastic Gift for a Grown Daughter to Give Her Father!
With Father's Day coming up, what can a grown daughter with a family of her own give as a present to a father who always read to her? This book makes an ideal choice. Any father would be thrilled to receive it, along with a photograph of father and daughter reading together. If you don't have such a photograph now, why not pose for one?

"We're there in the photo that hangs on the wall,/

the first childhood memory I can recall . . ."

The poetry develops around a mutual love of reading, and the closeness that it has brought.

The illustrations by Warren Hanson add a timeless, but time-tinged, romantic feeling to these moments of closeness that will tug at your heart.

And what do you think they are reading in the first photograph? Why, The Cat in the Hat! Think of that!

"That photograph shows the best times that I've had:/

all those times I spent reading with Dad."

As the story develops and time passes, the roles change. At eight, her father listens to her reading to her dolly, hamster and stuffed bear. In college, they would discuss authors over the telephone that she was reading. After she is a mother, she owns the old reading chair, and he watches her read The Cat in the Hat to her two little girls. As he ages, she reads to him while he is in bed.

As she thinks about all of these experiences, she remembers that "there was always a book before saying good-night."

"The best of the times that I've ever had/

are all of those times I've spend reading with Dad."

The illustrations are filled with closeness, Dad and daugher hugging or sitting close to one another. They make you feel a warmth in your chest that makes you yearn to have such moments with a father or a daughter.

But if you are like me, you will find that the best part is the idea of how to use reading as a connection throughout life.

What a wonderful way to reinforce a heritage of reading! I suggest that you think about how you can build on all of those wonderful stories you read together years ago. One way that I did it was to ask my daughter which books we had read together she liked best. Then I wrote a review of each one, and posted it on-line giving her full credit for the selection. In many cases, I also described her reactions to the stories. In this way, she can read a journal of our experiences together with those books. And the journal can be shared with her children someday. You can do the same . . . or even better, pick something that will mean even more in your family!

Connect with all you love and care about through books and reading!

Wonderful!
"Reading with Dad" is a wonderful story that "really speaks to you" according to one child. The concept is brilliant - revolving around the act of reading throughout life - while not being overwhelming. This one-of-a-kind storybook is beautifully worded and delightfully illustrated. And it is a great way to inspire children to read while encouraging adults to read with children. Recommended for all children but especially as a gift for a child, a babyshower present, or an addition to a preschool or elementary classroom.

A great historical reference!
I bought this book because Warren Angus Ferris is my Great (many times over) Grandfather and I was researching the family tree. What a delight to find that he was an accomplished writer and pioneer! His journal of his life in the Rocky Mountains is exceptionally well-written and a beautiful view of the time period. I recommend it to anyone with an interest of the early 1800's or fur-trading.

High Adventure in the Rockies!
Day to day survival in the early American West at its best! Pick up any reputable book on the fur trade era during this time frame, and Warren Ferris' "Life in the Rocky Mountains" is always cited as a reference. There is good reason for this. Ferris joined the American Fur Company in 1830 at the age of nineteen and this is his journal of how life was back then from 1830-1835, so far removed from the luxuries of civlization. He spent most of his time in the central and northern Rockies, describing and recording just about everything one can possibly imagine from hostile Indians and the unrelenting forces of nature to grizzlies, days without food and water, etc. He was there at the Battle of Pierre's Hole and the death of William Vanderburgh. He also details the Yellowstone area with its geysers and other oddities, along with many other geographical areas which we now take for granted. Ferris vividly describes the many different Indian tribes of the region of their customs, cultures and habits. This is an excellent book and I can see why many historians use this book as reference material. A must read for fur trade era enthusiasts and arm chair explorers.

About a young man pitted against horrible Minds
Dean Warren's Man Over Mind is a hard-core, well written science fiction saga about a young man pitted against horrible Minds, former human beings who merged their dissected brains with computers and reaped the power to rule the galaxy in utter depravity. The hero's fight takes him across space and time and against the workings of his own brain before he can challenge the dread nexus of the Mind's superhuman power. Man Over Mind is an exciting, whirlwind of an adventure tale and enthusiastically recommended reading for all SciFi buffs.

An Exciting Read
Although new to Sci-fi, I have studied human brain-power and its relationship to creativity. Dean Warren offers the reader a great story plus an even greater insight into how the brain works. Warren's hero, Tol, meets with many situations, each of which helps to explain the brain's intricate functions. Tol displays the mark of a born leader as he employs his tremendously logical brain in deadly combat with its silicone counterpart.
I recommend this book. It may, or may not, foretell human life in the year 3300, even so, it tells me that I have been missing something. I'm becoming a sci-fi fan!

What can I say? It's great!
Having actually lived in the country and visited the Amazon rain forest, this depiction of the destruction of the Atlantic rainforest and the effects there is highly factual and rather interesting. It is one of the only successful ecological histories about a forest! If you want a good read about the disappearance of one of Brazil's most historical aspects, then this book is for you.

Impressive environmental history of Brazil
This book is bound to change your view of Brazilian history, and of environmental history. A must read for anyone interested in either. A good Portuguese language translation is available.

A fine chapter by chapter Bible handbook for the non-scholar
Warren Wiersbe has an unusual ability to put things well for the non-scholar. Truth to be told those who preach and are theologically trained will find the contents helpful for ideas.

Give your child a great start to reading & writing!
As a an elementary school teacher, I know that kids definitely need literacy activities at home. As a mom, I also know that it's hard to fit everything that kids need into the day! That's why 1-2-3 Reading & Writing is so great! It has fabulous activities that you can easily do at home with your pre-school child to give him/her early experiences with reading & writing. It's very simple to follow, and you can use things you already have around the home for these great hands-on activities. For example, some of the activities use soap, golf-tees, tongue depressors, old magazines, buttons, and even snacks to teach your child beginning problem solving, eye-hand coordination, alphabet learning, etc. Most of the activities don't take a lot of prep-time, which is perfect for busy moms! This has great helps for making learning FUN! Isn't that how it should be anyway?

Gordon's Best
A New Critic to her core, Gordon's discipline, control, and craftsmanship shine through in her short stories. This collection should show anyone why she was such a tremendous influence on Flannery O'Connor. As a master of the short story, Gordon deserves the recognition accorded O'Connor, Katherine Anne Porter, and Eudora Welty. I hope someone will reissue Gordon's anthology 'The House of Fiction.'

Insightful with practical advice....worth the read
I read about this book in CFO & CIO so I picked up a copy. For a book written by a professor and a consultant, I found it to be very practical and easy to understand. As a turnaround manager I read a lot of business books and strategy publications and was pleasantly surprised at how approachable, yet valuable the book was. I checked out the documents featured on the book's website (...) and found them to be very useful and comprehensive. In fact, I will probably use some of these documents as frameworks for a project I am currently working on for my client.

Overall, I think the book does a great job at outlining a practical framework and approach to portfolio management. What's more, the book's concepts and tools seem fairly easy to implement....which is always a good thing.

Great book for the times
I don't read a lot of business books because most of them are to hard to apply to everyday business issues. As a senior executive, this book gives me and my staff real food for thought on how to make decisions about our may funded projects that can't all be kept with the economy the way it is. Great read and practical for the project owners.

Finally a practical set of IT portfolio management tools!
Connecting the Dots is a great read for anyone working in IT management. It can help you gain better control of your capital expenditures and information technology projects - both critical success factors in our industry.

Some of the ideas in the book are new and some aren't, but the book has done a great job at simplifying these concepts (ie. portfolio management) and making them accessible and usable. Instead of the usual 'pie in the sky' statements, this book dives into a company and illustrates how the tools and frameworks can be used in a typical business. It's refreshing to find the kind of book that can help you manage the execution of these issues.

The book claims that a company's project portfolio is what moves it into the future and provides great tools and techniques that teach you how to get your company to focus on producing business results and think about the bigger picture: where all these projects are actually taking your organization. The book also does a good job at helping you bridge the technology and business sides of an organization even though I could have done without the business history lesson in Chapter 2.

This book can easily be read in two to three hours. I just read it over the weekend and was able to start applying some of the ideas.
