A riveting look at how historians do history
A riveting murder mystery involving race and sex in the Old South, "Death of an Overseer" is equally fascinating for what it reveals about the historian's craft. Besides this, it is beautifully written. Historians and the general reader alike will find this book hard to put down.

A Great Resource
I enjoyed reading the book very much. I have visited a number of the places mentioned and found his information to be accurate. He provided information about locations I had never known even though I had lived there.
It also works well as a guidebook when vacationing

Excellent Stories
This book is a wonderful find. These are stories about the cultural experiences of many characters on both sides of the border. There are many different stories that made me think and want to revisit later. They can also be read as time permits. Highly recommended.

A Terrific Look at a Great Star
This is a terrific and sometimes moving book about John Wayne, one of my favorite movie stars of all time. OK, maybe he wasn't the world's greatest actor, but he had a larger than life presence on the screen and was a hell of a father and good citizen off the screen. The author goes to great lengths to cover all these different aspects of the Duke's life and also tells a lot of backstage stories that are fascinating. I agree with the author that his best performance was in The Searchers. Everybody should read this book.

Engrossing biography of the Duke!
An immensely engaging analysis of the actor who for many years was the #1 most popular film star in the world, even many years after his death. The author diagnostically and exhaustingly detailed perspective of Wayne the actor vs. Wayne the man is what sets it apart as a landmark bio. You will not be displeased. In one chapter the author discusses the fact that, after having seen "High Noon" he was so upset with the scene wherein Coop throws his marshall's badge into the dusty road that he was instrumental in seeing to it that the script writer was investigated and later forced out of the country after being suspected of pro-communist leanings during the McCarhty witchtrials. Wayne is ultimately admired as an artist yet condemned for his staunchly conservative political views

Lessons on strategy
This title belongs to the "Classics of sea power" collection edited by the United States Naval Institute. It's a good indicator that the book is worth reading. And certainly it is. Wolfgang Wegener was a German officer at the Imperial Navy during World War I. He disagreed on how the naval war was being fought and expressed himself on papers sent to his superiors. One of the major ideas he had, was that Germany needed to get ports on the Norwegian or French coasts in order to avoid British blocade. The importance of his thinking is that it led to Raeder's planning before World War II. The main text is an essay published after the Great War on which Wegener critiques the way the Navy was (mis)used during the entire conflict; here is where he points out the requirements (a hold on Norway and France) in order to achive a victorious campaign in the future. This edition includes some papers written by Wegener during the First World War, which set the basis for his later work. This is a book of geopolitics and strategy, certainly a must read for all those interested on naval affairs.
