The National Gallery of Art, Washington (Concise Edition)
Published in Hardcover by Random House Value Pub (December, 1987)
Amazon base price: $14.99
Average review score:

This book is one of my favorites, and has been for many years. Its beautiful color illustrations are grouped by the period and country in which they were created. The book presents works (mostly paintings) from many countries (mostly Western) beginning in the Byzantine era, extending up until the early twentieth century. Many of the works are accompanied by art historical abstracts which offer insight for both the inexperienced and learned art enthusiast. This is a great book to have around as an extensive survey of Western painting.

One Small Gift
Published in Paperback by Beverly Labrum (August, 1997)
Amazon base price: $4.00

Seven Year old Chris and his mom are moving and he must leave everything behind, including his prized possession, BEAR. Miss Lilly, his teacher, treasures teddy bears like no other so Chris decides to leave Bear with her but with the promise that she will only keep him until Chris can come back and get him. Years pass and she keeps Bear on her classroom shelf wondering if he will ever come back as she will retire next year. Chris finally comes back to claim Bear as an adult man. He tells his old teacher how he moved several times after he left there and then joined the service and is about to be married. Bear is reclaimed and there is closure to this charming, heartwarming story. This book was given to me as a gift from my sister-in-law. Mrs. Labrum was my niece's teacher. I cried like a baby after reading it and recommend this to ALL teachers... if you are a parent and are looking for a great, inexpensive gift to give... give this book along with a small teddy bear!

Petals Journal

I loved this journal so much I bought 3 at once at Buck-A-Book and now I'm coming to the end of the 3rd one - and afraid I'd never find it again... but here it is! It's beautiful - nice thick bright white paper with light blue rules, hardcover and spiral bound so it's easy to write in on either side of the page even when you don't have a hard surface to write on, and still small enough to slip in my purse. I used it as a food journal. I recommend this or any hardcover Chronicle Books journal to everyone.

The Quotable Sherlock Holmes
Published in Paperback by Mysterious Press (November, 2000)
Amazon base price: $12.95
Average review score:

A modern look at quotations from the Sherlockian Canon, done in an amusing and interesting way. Each group of quotes on a subject is then put under headings such as: "HIS CHOSEN AEROBIC ROUTINE," "JUST ONE OF THOSE DAYS," and "PLEASE CONFUSE ME WITH THE FACTS."
The original Sidney Paget drawings are throughout the book, and the cover looks suitably Victorian/Edwardian. It's a small volume, but it contains, as the back page says: "THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOLMES."
Keep it close by, as a reference tool, or just a book to thumb through. It's worth it!

Seven Per Cent Solution
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (December, 1985)
Amazon base price: $3.95
Average review score:

Written with an amazing story teller perspective, this book tells us about where Sherlock Holmes had been hiding for five years of his life : in the glamoured city of Vienna and in the hands of Dr. Sigmund Freud, in search for a cure to cocaine addiction. But ultimately, his treatment turns into a mad search to understand the meaning of Professor Moriarty, his archenemy and perhaps a product of his fantastic imagination and childhood memories. If anyone is looking for a great piece of reading entertainement which pairs golden pieces of Sherlockian investigation with Freudian psychonalysis - this is a treat !

I started with the North & South Trilogy and was deeply depressed when it was over. I deeply missed the characters and just didn't want it to end. Therefore, what could be better than a John Jakes story that takes 8 books to complete!! Once you read The books, you won't be able to stop until you read them all. This is a great book containing three different stories or stages surrounding the life of our first Kent -- Phillip. All of these stories collide for a finale that is as good as anything I have ever read. One of the best parts of this book is how Jakes uses Ben Franklin as the key character in bringing the story together. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. The story is superb and the history lesson makes you proud to be an American. I can't wait to start Book Two -- The Rebels!!

I read all the series in the Kent Family Chronicles ten years ago when I was a senior in high school. I could not put them down and was fascinated by what each generation of this family went through. At the time, I was studying American History and these books made everything click and placed it all in perspective. John Jakes is the one who inspired me to work towards my dream of a writing career and to pursue a degree in junior high or high school history. He is one of my very favorite authors. He makes history come alive and helps one to understand it all. The breathtaking romance and nail biting adventure and thrills are just the icing on the cake. I loved every book in the series, although the "Warriors" is my favorite and "Jeremiah", my favorite Kent family member. I look forward to rereading them all again soon.

I am now 36 years old and I never read the series when it came out, nor did I see the mini-series movie on tv. But I was inspired by the movie THE PATRIOT to read historical fiction of this era, so what else but John Jakes books would do! I was not disappointed. The history was woven well into the fictional story of Philip Kent. The romance and adventure were enthralling, and you almost believed that Philip met the characters thrown in like Ben Franklin and Sam Adams. An excellent book.... I can't wait to read the next one!.... and maybe all eight.
