4 opinions about Siqueiros.
The Centenary of Siqueiros' birth was in l996, and this book makes an outstanding contribution to a celebration of Siqueiros' life and works. It is a full political biography of the artist-citizen-socialist fighter, as well as an "art book" with 72 pages that present 134 photos and reproductions. These are discussed and explained in the text along with Siqueiros' theories about art and new realism. Philip Stein discloses for the first time the extensive FBI files meddling in the affairs of Mexican citizens. Siqueiros: His Life and Works has an extensive bibliography of the writings, exhibits and lectures of Siqueiros as well as background bibliography. (Reviewer's Bookwatch, January 1995). - "I am a citizen artist, not a Bohemian.I don't believe in a world where each artist is a little god, each one with his own philosophy, each one with his own little kitchen to fry his abstract ham and eggs. The only bad painting is the one dominated by the individual ego. Easel paintings whisper to the private few. Murals shout to the public." These words by Siqueiros embody the militant stance on art taken by one of the most forceful painters of the 20th century. Together with Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco, this triumvirate was the phalanx that led to the founding of the Mexican mural movement, the most significant advancement in art since the Italian Renaissance. This and much more is the subject of this book by Philip Stein an artist who spent a decade working with Siqueiros. It is a work of painstaking research and personal knowledge that is not only a biography of Siqueiros (l896-1974) but also a political history of the 20th century Mexican revolution and its aftermath. This book is a powerful argument for social commitment in art, a valuable source of education for all artists, yuoung and old. (Norman Goldberg, artist-critic). - This magnificent biography is a comprehensive study digging deeply into the historical roots and tempestuous conflicts that shaped Siqueiros into an agressive leader, including his Indian and Mexican heritage, union struggles, military action, political conflicts and his role in organizing cooperative groups of artists who would put their collective endeavors to the service of humanity. This biography is a remarkable work of art with a beautifully felt poetic prose. It is a wonderful restoration of the life of a complex artist. Documentation has a scholarly completeness, color photographs aid us in grasping some of the magnificence of his painting and mural accomplishments. This a biography of enormous importance and beauty, so rich one will go back to it again and again. (Anthony Toney, artist). Stein's marvellous book is a meticulous and inspiring study of a great artist. But more than that it is a cultural achievement in its own right. Throughout its pages Siqueiros is brought powerfully alive. Stein himself writes with the perception and sensitivity of an artist and presents a fascinating account of the artist's technique and methods. This is definitely not a "coffee table" book; nor is it aimed at the art expert. The style is always readable and accessible to the general reader. At times "Siqueiros" even has the pace and excitement of a novel. (Julian Holt, professor of literature, Lancaster, England).

Tree Stories: A wonderful heartwarming book for all
This is an amazing book full of stories that warm the soul. It's nice to finally see people who recognize the value that trees hold in our hearts!
A wondrous collection of original short stories and poems
Tree Stories: A Collection Of Extraordinary Encounters is a wondrous collection of original short stories and poems by both adult and child authors, each about a special tree that influenced the writer's life. An enchanting, lyrical anthology that celebrates trees half in prose and half in verse, Tree Stories is a most charming and delightful gift book for nature lovers everywhere. Waiting For A Message: Trees help you see slices of sky between branches,/point to things you could never reach./Trees help you watch the growing happen,/watch blossoms burst then dry,/see shade twist to the pace of the sun,/birds tear at unwilling seeds.//Trees take the eye to where it is,/where it was,/then over to distant hills,/faraway to other places and times,/long ago.//A tree is a lens,/a viewfinder, a window./I wait below/for a message/of what is yet to come.

Comprehensive
This is truly one of the most comprehensive histories of Alabama I have encountered. From the first settlement by Native Americans to the confusing, and most times laughable, political present of the "state" of Alabama. Dr. Wayne Flynt, Professor Emeritus at the University of Auburn, writes the final section of this book which covers the socio-economical status and political machinations of Alabama from the early 1900's through the present. He has a clear insight of where Alabama has been historically and where she must go to contribute significantly to her people and her nation. A must read for anyone who votes in Alabama and a must read for those who envision a new and brighter history for Alabama.

Amazing
A staggering achievement. After viewing the exhibition at the San Francisco MoMA, I became very interested in this subject. I've found it to be an amazing introduction into the world of Art/Architecture for those whose interest lies within the graphic arts. Thoroughly enjoyable, highly enlightening. Highest Recommendation

A remarkable anthology of twenty-four poets
The Franconia, New Hampshire, farm of the American poet Robert Frost was turned into a museum and center for poetry and the arts in 1976. From that time, "The Frost Place" has been annual event wherein an emerging poet has been invited to spend the summer living in the house where Frost once lived and wrote some of his greatest poetry. The Breath Of Parted Lips: Voices From The Robert Frost Place, Volume One is a remarkable anthology of twenty-four poets, each of whom won that honor of a summer's residency and document the success of the original concept as a means of generating outstanding poetry while nurturing the poet's muse in the rooms and views that were once the inspiration of the great Robert Frost. Poem At 40: Windwashed--as if standing next to the highway,/a truck long as the century sweeping by,/all things at last bent in the same direction./An opening, as if all/the clothes my ancestors ever wore/dry on lines in my body:/wind-whipped, parallel with the ground,/some sleeves sharing a single clothespin/so that they seem to clasp hands,/seem to hold on.//And now that I can see/up the old women's dresses,/there's nothing but a filtered light./And now that their men's smoky breath/has traversed the earth,/it has nothing to do with them./And now that awkward, fat tears of rain/slap the window screen,/now that I'm naked too,/cupping my genitals, tracing with a pencil/the blue vein between my collar bone and breast,/I'll go to sleep when I'm told.

Funny, funny, funny. What surprised me most was finding out it was based on actual events (meaning that they did go on a camping trip). I enjoy everytime I listen to it.

Great Book!
This is one of the best wood working books of any kind I have read. Lots of detail and many tips. The paddle building skills mixed with the Native American history of the paddle was very interesting. I can't wait for their next advanced book!

Devastating Critique of Creationism
End of story! Definitive arguments against Creationism by
scientists, Christian theologians, and lawmakers. If every
living Creationist read this book with an open mind, that
would be the end of Creationism. Unfortunately, because of
their psychological need for absolute answers, these people
are constitutionally unable to read anything objectively that
contradicts their so-called "literal" interpretation of the Bible,
so the rational among us will be stuck with them until they all
die out, which would be Darwinian evolution at its merciful
best

A MAGNIFICENTLY ILLUSTRATED BILINGUAL VOLUME
For a considerable period of time the Mexican colonial period was viewed as a wasteland in the arts, a barren stretch awaiting the arrival of the Spaniards. Recent scholarship reveals that this was not the case. In fact, just the opposite was true as is showcased in this magnificently illustrated bilingual volume.
Displayed between these pages are eye-popping decorative and fine arts from the Mexican viceregal period (1521 - 1821). Included among the collection are paintings, sculptures, furniture, ceramics, metals, textiles, featherwork, lacquer, and books.
Five informative essays by Mexican and American scholars provide a backdrop for the arts of colonial Mexico, and extensive commentaries allow further exploration of individual pieces.
"The Grandeur of Viceregal Mexico" is an extraordinary volume shedding light on a previously little known segment of art history.

Fantastic! A must in any environmental scientist's library
Gives a detailed explanation of the different properties needed for environmental modeling and even for chemical engineering design. Very well written, thought a little boring (is imposible to be funny with this kind of material). Puts you in the right track immediatly.
