Another good example of useful charts
This book of charts is part of a series covering the Old Testament, the New Testament, Church History, Christian Doctrine, Philosophy, etc.

Of the several that I have, I would rate this as not quite as good as its New TEstament counterpart.

There are easily just as many points of difference in doctrine and theology in the Old Testament as in the New; and there is no consensus in the Christian Church on the actual contents of the Old Testament Canon. As such, the obvious Protestant bias limits the ultimate value of this book for Catholic or Orthodox.

Nevertheless, this would still be a good book for the "informed layman" or for a church library.

But it is not without its flaws, and that needs to be realized in advance by clergy of differing backgrounds.

These CHARTS are the best. Get them all.
Were all biased anyway. The question is which bias is the best bias. Catholics or anyone who "may not benefit as much" from this tool should wonder why not? I don't think God wrote a book hard to be understood. If you are a Catholic, Charismatic, or of the "Orthodox" persuasion, and you cannot "benifit as much" from this chart due to "bias", then perhaps you need to explore the differences between what makes a Christian different from a Catholic. These are not merely terms. A "Christian" is not an umbrella that encompasses a vast majority of mainline denominations or cults or movements or sects, as many people would have others to believe. God in His word tells us who are His. It would be best for folks to check it out. (Jn.1:12; 3:16; Eph.2:8 etc.)----anyway. As the Charts are a great series I personally own three of the set or series, and they are outstanding.

Great information about a little-known history
Growing up in Louisiana, I had heard various stories about Bernardo de Galvez and his role in aiding the Americans during the Revolution. John Caughey explains it all in this well-researched text, including many incidents and facts that surprised me. For instance, it has been documented that the English planned an attack on New Orleans during the American Revolution and would have had not the Spanish attacked their forts at Manchac and Baton Rouge first. Genealogists with ties to the American Revolutionary battles in Louisiana will also enjoy this book. The text becomes a bit tedious due to the scholarly nature, but that's a minor point. The trials, tribulations and accomplishments of this little-known American hero are sure to delight all readers.

Interesting Look at the Covenants of the Bible
This book sets out an interesting and original way of looking at the Biblical covenants. Walton's thesis is that the covenants are not primarily soteric or redemptive, but revelatory. Thus, his view of the covenants is significantly different from the views of covenant theology and dispensationalism. He argues that the OT covenants have a revelatory function during the OT period and that the New Covenant marks a transition point where a new people of God (the Church) is formed. He argues that the covenants are unconditional, but the benefits of the covenants are conditioned upon faithfulness on the part of the elect on the requirements of the covenants. His view of Israel and the Church is a mediating position between covenant theology and classical dispensationalism. Though he argues against replacement theology (covenant theology), he also argues against the view that Israel is still a separate people of God apart from the Church. He argues that Israel will possess certain future blessings in the Millennial Kingdom due to God's covenant promises with them, but present-day physical Israelites must accept Christ to become part of the new people of God (the Church). However, Jewish Christians are a different "sector" of God's family in the NT with different privileges and blessings that Gentile believers do not have any rights to. Also, Walton believes that the OT Law is a whole unit that has been "superimposed" by the Law of Christ. Therefore, NT believers have the Law implanted in their hearts so that they can render obedience to God. The external code is useful, but is inferior in that it cannot transform peoples' hearts. What is needed is the Holy Spirit to implant the Law in the heart so that people are able to obey God's commands. Walton gives us an interesting look at the covenants from a revelatory perspective. Covenant theologians and dispensationalists should read this book to get a better understanding of the nature of the OT covenants.

The Emigrants' Guide to California (American Scene)

Excellent book of the pioneer days
This is a reprint of the actual guide book used by many pioneers. In various diaries it is referred to as "Ware's Guide." I found it to be amazingly accurate and was shocked to learn that Joseph Ware never completed the trip west. He was abandoned on the trail when he took ill and died where they left him.

Good read to get started and get a good overview
This book gives a good introduction to argumentation theory and its twists and turns over the course of its existence. I found it helpful to get started, especially coming from a completely different field. It gives the essence of Toulmin and Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca but I would have liked to see a bit more on Austin and Searle. But then again the references mentioned are very extensive and can be followed up. All in all a good book if a bit pricey for students (whatever happened to the paperback cover?)

The Gorrion Tree: Cuba and the Grenada Revolution (American University Studies. Series X, Political Science, Vol 38)
Published in Hardcover by Peter Lang Publishing (1993)
Author: John Walton Cotman
Amazon base price: $48.95
Average review score:

Read This to Refute the Reagan Apologists
Much has been written by the Reaganites to defend what was the most outrageous aggression by America on a small nation in the 20th century; the lies about Soviet and Cuban "occupation," the threat to the US citizens studying there, the construction of an airfield to handle Commie bombers, etc. While the author is clearly biased towards the Grenadian Revolution, he does give the lie to most of the post-invasion rationalization. However, in so doing he does understate the hard-line nature of the Leninist (Coard) faction, which did see itself as the legitimate revolutionary faction, ultimately destroying itself and its Stalinist vision. However, the focus is on Cuba's involvement, which clearly did not see Grenada as anything other than a fellow socialist state struggling to overcome a hostile political environment in the Caribbean. That is not to say that Castro did not intend to collaborate with the New Jewel Movement in exporting revolution, but with a larger and better located Nicaragua on the mainland as a partner, Grenada had, by necessity, to be the most junior of colleagues. I would like to have seen this aspect developed more, but Cotman obviously wants to paint a sympathetic picture here. I recommend this book, even at its lofty price, for anyone interested in hearing another side to this still controversial issue.

A little too academic for me.
The author is an historian and proud of it. I was reading this to get a better feel for the history of the "Rape of the Owens Valley" by the L.A. water wizards. I got the history I was looking for, but it was packaged in a form that made it harder to digest. The author was much too concerned with showing off his vocabulary and "dissing" other historians' views. He cleary had his own academic agenda and it got in the way of communicating. Still, the book gave me what I was looking for and it was worth the read.
