Fairly good book on the subject
This book is a pretty good introduction to the main results that caused a flurry of excitement in the mathematical community in the mid 1990's. The mathematical constructions involved here are interesting mostly to those in the area of the differential topology of 4-manifolds. The Seiberg-Witten invariants as they are now called, have been widely discussed since then, but mostly now in the context of symplectic geometry. After a brief overview of spin geometry and Clifford algebras, the author discusses the complex spin representation. This sets up the discussion of spin bundles in the next chapter, and, even though it is really not the place for it, the author does not prove that a principal SO(V) bundle lifts to a principal Spin(V) if and only if the second Stiefel-Whitney class is equal to zero. There are many different proofs of this in the literature, but I have not discovered in any of these proofs any real, sound insight as to why this result is true. The chapter continues its very formal treatment with an overview of spin bundles and the Dirac operator. The next chapter then moves immediately to the Seiberg-Witten equations and they are viewed as nonlinear generalizations of elliptic partial differential equations in the sense that the linearization of both the Seiberg-Witten equations and the gauge group action is shown to be an ellipic complex. The next chapter shows that the moduli space of solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations is compact. This is the most technical of the chapters and requires attentive reading. The Seiberg-Witten invariant for complex spin structures is discussed in the next chapter. Again one must pay close attention to the details of the arguments. The actual calculation of a Seiberg-Witten invariant is performed in the context of Kahler manifolds in the last chapter of the book. This sets up the reader nicely for the current work on symplectic manifolds. The book will be of interest to mathematicians wanting an understanding of this area of four-dimensional topology and to high-energy physicists who are interested in the low energy behavior and duality in SU(2) supersymmetric gauge theories. The constructions of Seiberg and Witten in quantum field theory are what led to the invariants outlined in this book. All in all a fascinating area of mathematics and its consequences are sill being worked out with diligence.

So sad . . . . .Just reeks of the empty life of a hanger-on
Far from informative, this book does nothing toward providing any sort of accurate rendition of the madness that has engulfed Sundance of late. Both the dashed dreams and the fulfilled hopes of the various players are often obscured by the author's tedious, hackneyed prose. Prose that is so cliche-ridden I wonder whether the esteemed Mr. Anderson actually wrote it himself or simply gave the book as an assignment to another drear film student, a pre-John Anderson in its larval stage if you will. On every page we learn not so much about the Sundance festival or its participants as we discover Anderson's yearnings to fit into that world, to find a place for himself among the glamor and achievement that only true creators attain. Sour grapes and misgivings on every page, it might more aptly be titled "Tales of a Film Critic Nothing."
It draws a fair picture
A previous reviewer claimed author John Anderson was some kind of piteous wannabe. He didn't read this book very closely: it's not Anderson talking. The author almost completely relies on interviews with others; they make up 9/10ths of the book. It's an *oral history*, or maybe an oral snapshot, of the 1999 festival. I just got back from my first Sundance (2003) last month, and read this book afterwards. Very amusing, very "human-sized," as the back cover blurb puts it. Some movie suits are their own self-parodists; it's interesting to read about people who live in Park City, Utah all year and then get overrun for two weeks annually. This is not snobby at all, not whiny. It's fun and funny and true.

Nice Woodcuts decorate Pretentious Ghost Stories
The 'patron saint' of the "Morgan Library Ghost Stories" is supposedly M.R. James. If true, then he must be rolling over in his grave. One of his cardinal precepts on writing ghost stories was to beware of talkative ghosts (they aren't scary). The ghosts in this book could enter the Miss America contest and get elected 'Miss Conviviality'. In other words, the Morgan Library ghosts are chatty losers.
I imagine "Morgan Library Ghost Stories" might be a collectors' item some day since it is published in a limited edition with nice wood engravings by John De Pol. However, those of you who enjoy a well-written, truly frightening ghost story should give this book a pass.

good concept - doesn't flow
This book's concept is great. But the fact that it really doesn't rhyme at all makes it quite difficult to read to a child. It is almost like stumbling over the words even after reading it 10 or 15 times.
