nothing exceptional
This is the unofficial guide? It reads like the basic guide to San Francisco. Nothing new or exciting is revealed in this book.

Very useful travel guide
This is a complete guide to visiting the city of San Francisco. The book is well written, very clear, and has a tremendous amount of information. It covers hotels, restaurants, attractions, etc. The authors provide several possible itineraries depending on what kind of trip you want and how long you intend to stay. In short, the book is an excellent tool to help you plan your entire trip.

The only drawback is that there are no pictures at all and SF is a visually exciting and diverse city. When deciding what you want to visit, a picture or two could go a long way in deciding what is a must see and what is not. For example, I had never heard of the Palace of Fine Arts but when I saw a picture of it in another book I knew I had to go there. This is an excellent book but it would be better still if they could add some color photos in the next edition.

the right information and well organized
Good advice about attractions. I like the way it divides SF into neighborhoods, and filters down to just the essential info, very practical for a single trip. We were pleased with the restaurant advice as well.

great work hopelessly marred by printing errors...
This book suffers from huge ordering errors (which no one seems to be in any great hurry to correct...) The story, while enjoyable, is near impossible to decode without asking another fan or using the original comics as a guide. Even if you can decode the confusing order, it's impossible to immerse yourself in a world when you're hunting for the next page ^^;

It's all out of order!
Elfquest is the best. However, I just want to post some info about the correct order to read this printing.
Here's the page sequence if you get this edition. This series was 4, 28-page issues. This book has no page numberers.
This Volume Orig.Comic,Orig. page#
Pages 1-24 - Seige #1---->1-24
Pages 25-49 - Seige #3---->1-28
Pages 50-53 - Seige #4---->1-3
Pages 54-57 - Seige #1---->25-28
Pages 58-86 - Seige #2---->1-28
Pages 87-End- Seige #4---->4-28
The idea is that you want to read it following the sequence of the "original comic" column. I put sticky notes all over mine and found it possible to read this. Hope that helps.

AMazing
I love this book! It shows just how manipulative Winnowill can be.

Fascinating look at the site and construction of the Getty.
The transformation of one of the most imposing "wild" parcels of land in Los Angeles into what is now the Getty Center (Museum, etc.) is the story of these stunning, beautiful black and white photographs. These images and thoughtful essays will be appreciated by anyone interested in art, landscapes, culture and/or modern architecture.

The Black Tradition in American Dance
Published in Hardcover by Rizzoli (1989)
Authors: Richard A. Long and Joe Nash
Amazon base price: $29.95
Used price: $7.62
Average review score:

a rare and valuable resource...
This book "surveys all of the major personalities in Black dance from the 1920's to the present day" (1989 copyright). Photographs by Joe Nash.

Inside the cover, it sums it up, "Richard Long's elegantly illustrated (photos) book, dedicated to Pearl Primus and Katherine Dunham, show how the varied contributions of many talented and persevering men and women have put Black dance and dancers in the spotlight. ... the book traces all the strands, motifs, and fashions in Afro-American dance from the early minstrels, through the dance dramas of Isadata Dafora, to the thriving dance companies of today - Alvin Ailey, Harlem, Nanette Bearden, Dayton, Philadelphia [plus Josephine Baker, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, etc.- ballet, modern, and tap]..."

I have been looking for a book like this for a long time. It has many great photos of many people, some I have known, and some I had no idea of their contribution to Dance History. It's hard to find, but worth the wait!

History of the hollers and knobs of Eastern Tennessee
I met Joe Morgan in the middle of a two day driving rainstorm as I hiked the appalachian trial. Joe took me for a ride with an oral history showing me places in his book. I look forward to fleshing out the visual with the written word as I have ordered the book.

Revised edition of original titled PRINCESS N.Y.
Readers of the original, Princess N.Y. will enjoy this newer edition as it includes the original tale, and adds several new chapters, picking up with the author's marriage, his children, and their life with this classic Friendship sloop. My father had the original book, which is still in my library, and he also got a copy of this revised edition, which has since been lost. I read this new version 25 years ago, and I remember it well, though I would love to read it again. The book also includes several new pen&ink illustrations by the author in his distinctive style.

Good ideas, bad explinations
I hope no one else has the same bad experience as me so this is just a warning. I spent around 20 hours trying to get the example in chapter 2 to work. I've installed apache/tomcat with IIS several times and it has never taken more than a couple of hours -point being figuring out struts shouldn't take very long. After struggling with this book I got another book "Apache Jakarta-Tomcat" and read their 10 page exerpt on struts. The 10 page explination in the Apache book helped me much more than the 63 pages in chapter 2. The explinations were much more clear and the struts frame work was very simple to understand. After reading the apache book I went back through the example found in chapter 2 and found SEVERAL errors in the source code! I wasted a lot of time because I had thought I installed struts incorrectly. It was frustrating to waste so much time just because the source code in chapter 2 was incorrect. If chapter 2 had explained struts more clearly I probably could have caught the errors in the source code. Chapter 2 explains about 500 ideas with no real concrete examples to show you what it's talking about. Then it speeds through an example (that doesn't work) and it doesn't really show you at all how everything is finally tied together.
To be fair, the book does have a disclaimer in the beging which states that it's for more advanced users. So if you aren't very very familiar with struts don't start with this book. Once you get past the struts nightmare the rest of the book is pretty good. I wouldn't say the explinations aren't very good but the ideas they present are very usefull.

very good
It is definitely not a beginner book.

But all the chapters are good even though it was written by different authors.

The section on refactoring in the beginning set the tone of the book. Good authors. Would recommend this book to anyone working with jsps. Very easy language to understand too. The reason I gave it a 4 is 'coz I understood it more only after I began working with jsps for a while.

Author writing his own reviews?
It seems obvious to me the author has written the two reviews that give the book 5 stars. Another indication the book may not be worth a read.

An Author Responds
Since my book is mentioned in a couple of these reviews, I thought I would respond.

I used Rich Freed's book for years in my consulting practice and MBA classes. It's a great book, and I *highly* recommend it. It's clearly one of the best treatments on writing business proposals available.

But comparing my book on proposals to Freed's is like comparing apples and oranges. My book is aimed at people who work in scientific and technical disciplines. Freed's book is written toward business applications. These two books are designed to work in two completely different arenas.

Buy this book. As an experienced proposal writer and consultant, I believe it's the best book on writing business proposals. It's truly innovative, and it offers wonderful strategies for winning contracts in highly competitive business environments.

The 2nd Edition Rocks
The first edition of this books is, as the former editor of Consultants' News remarks, "The most comprehensive treatment we've seen," and the second edition is even better, including (for example) important discussions on fees and collaboration. Most important, this book is about far more than writing business proposals. David Maister-like in spirit, it's a superior treatment about how to sell professional services. Although it addresses business proposals, most of the content is important for writing other proposals as well, but like most successful books on proposal writing, it focuses on one of the sub-genres, unlike more general treatments (Johnson-Sheehan's comes to mind) that in their attempts to focus on all proposals, do a poor job of treating specific kinds.
