Wisdom We Can All Benefit From
Marshall's Lakota Way is a wonderful book that I found to conatin bits of wisdom that can benefit all of us, no matter who you are or where you live. The book examines Lakota perspectives on life and how it relates to modern society. I would highly recommend this book as well as Marshall's "Winter of the Holy Iron".

Swept Away
I was truely swept away by this book. All the different stories relating to the Virtues are wonderful. I would recommend this to anyone that shares a love for Native Americans. Their beliefs really come alive in this book for dreamers and romantics like me.

Finally......a book on reality!...
I borrowed this book from the library and
when I started reading it, I couldn't put
it down. I finished the book that same night,
it was great.

This book is based on reality. All these virtues
are based on pure common sense principles.

I will buy this book and a couple more for my
family and friends.

Fantastic. The best book i have ever read!
I have studied health, meditation and martial arts for 25 years. I have meditated with Saints and been to some of the best Ayur Vedic healers, Network Chriopractors, Reiki masters, in the world. Joseph can quickly and accurately give you all the answers you have been searching for. And explain why it is you have made so little progress with all the help you had recieved. This book is wonderfull in its ablity to explain simply some very complex ideas, and to inspire you to a pure vision of yourself. One you knew was there all along but were not able to quite reach. As the book describes, Joseph was born gifted and then stuided many years with masters of herbology, Indian martial arts etc, and has continued even further to work towards a real vision of "perfect health". I have bought 3 for myself and others. God bless Joseph Kurian.

Living in Beauty--don't we all want that?
From dieting, exercise, gyms and spas to plastic surgery, many of us are focused on beauty and happiness from the outside. Joseph Kurian shows us how to use our gifts from God--our bodies, minds and spirits--to become the most beautiful beings that we can be. From the inside out. So eloquently written, I found myself reading and re-reading each word to absorb as much as possible. Not only an interesting and educating read but a practical guide which I know I will use as my health "bible".

A client of Joseph Kurian's for the last few years, I instantly felt and saw the positive and life altering effects of Joseph's creams, herbs and oils and rejuvenation treatments. Now I fully understand the history and methodology of his work and why I now feel better than I can ever remember.

What a wonderful gift God has given us through Joseph Kurian. Please read Living in Beauty and pass it along to your loved ones--I have!

Beautifully Inspirational and Spiritually Informative
I received Joseph's book as a gift...a true gift it was. Being a Client of Joseph's and being privileged to experience his Healing Programs and the use of his products, this book was naturally the next experience for me. It's wonderful to have knowledge so vital to our very being, shared, and Living in Beauty shares the knowledge of Marma science with the inspirational power to guide anyone toward their desired state of health, beauty and vitality. This is a beautiful book written by a truly beautiful Master.

The Moscow Club
Published in Paperback by New American Library (1991)
Author: Joseph Finder
Amazon base price: $5.99
Average review score:

Excellent Debut Novel
Joseph Finder knows his stuff! I am an avid reader who reads 1-2 novels a week. After polishing off several Grishams and Pattersons, I was looking for something new. My mom gave me an old copy of The Moscow Club. I could not put it down. The details that Finder weaves through the story are amazing and the pace is breathtakingly quick. There are no places to take a breather and I am still tired from missing way too much sleep. I am about finished with his second book, Extraordinary Powers, and it is just as fine. Time to order his third....

Not even people in high places know everything.......
Charlie Stone is a CIA analyst who is asked by his boss to find more information on a document reference called "the Lenin testament". Charlie is reluctant to pursue this, even though he is aware that both his father and another old family friend might be able to help him, because of old scandals within his family.

However, against his better judgement, he does follow up this information, which leads him deeper and deeper into a conspiracy involving people in high places in both the USA and Russia - where people's motives are not what they seem.

Finder has crafted a well written, well paced and enjoyable post cold war novel with this book. It's a what-if situation that could have happened in Russia - but if it did we would probably never know about it. His use of terrorists as scare-mongers to initiate official action is almost eerie in the light of events over the last few years, yet this book was written in 1991, when terrorists did not have the cachet they have now.

With a great story and characters you care about this book is worth picking up to read if you enjoy a good thriller.

Excellent Writing by Joseph Finder
It's a shame that such a book is out of print. When I read The Moscow Club, I was litteraly flipping the pages one after another. It keeps you alert all the time because you never know what is going to happen. An excellent way to kill time while you're on a boring trip.

The Neglected and Abused: A Physician's Year in Haiti
Published in Paperback by Michelle Pub Co (1991)
Author: Joseph Francis Bentivegna
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

A Must Read!!!
As a pre-med major hoping to work in Third World Countries, this book speaks straight to my heart. Bentivegna is brilliant and completely honest about the suffering in Haiti. I found myself laughing in earnest at his awkward culture shock and horrified by the people that came to him for help. He has a heart of gold and a mind to match; his spirit and humanity are revealed to the public and I am in awe of his character. Bentivegna is a man I would have loved to meet and work alongside of in Haiti and his book is a testament of his work. I recommend this for anyone and everyone. It is wildly intellectual without seeming dull. It is shocking, grotesque and painful, but very true. I have seen Haiti with my eyes and he speaks from the heart with real clarity.

A must read for medical volunteers in Haiti
"Neglected and Abused" is a must read for anyone going to Haiti as a medical volunteer (or anyone going to Haiti for any reason). I was captivated by Dr. Joe's tales of medicine in a country with so few resources. I have been going to Haiti as a medical missionary for two years now and I found this book to be an excellent account of the medical situation in Haiti. I think this book would be a wise read for anyone planning a trip to give you an idea of what you are about to face. Dr. Joe's experience took place in the late 1980's before the embargo and the subsequent further deterioration of the health situation in Haiti. Keep that in mind when you read this book - things are worse now.

Very realistic
I am not Haitian, but I have been to Haiti many times and the book seems to present a very realistic picture of the people and problems in Haiti. Dr. Bentivegna simply tells it like it is--he realizes that problems like malnutrition, unsanitary water, and lack of vaccination programs and birth control compound any doctor's best efforts to provide medical care to the poor in Haiti. He does not hide his frustration as he encounters these things and others as his year in Haiti progresses. Along these lines, he states in the epilogue: "The problems that initially seemed so easy to solve became infinitely complex the better I understood them" (p. 161).

The title of the last chapter in the book is "Questions Without Answers," and includes story upon story of ethical dilemmas he encountered in Haiti (which are so different from the dilemmas encountered in 1st-world medicine), and how he chose to act in these situations. They illustrate how gray the lines can be, and how he had to, as he says, "play God" in Haiti. He also points out the problems that occur when people and groups attempt to impliment short-term solutions to long-term problems. It's very eye-opening.

In the midst of this, it is obvious that Dr. Bentivegna loves and respects the Haitian people, and that he is torn by their plight. Sadly, though this book was written more than a decade ago, it might as well have been written last month. We can only hope and pray that Aristide's leadership will bring infrastructural changes and economic development to Haiti in the coming years. It is only these things, as Bentivegna notes, that will provide long-term change in Haiti.

Practical Cisco Routers
Published in Paperback by Que (1999)
Authors: Joseph W. Habraken and Joe Habraken
Amazon base price: $29.99
Average review score:

The only book I had to use
Simple yet thorough.

On my desk I had:

IP Routing Primer - doesn't make good bed-time reading ;-)

Cisco Routers Black Book - very nicely written, but a bit too detailed for a quick job.

Those were given by my employer.

Practical Cisco Routers - thin and easy to read. Uses extensive examples to show you exactly how things work.

That one is a personal copy.

I only had to refer to my Practical book in order to setup the router and tell someone to set up the other end of the system.

This book will not tell you the intricacies of EIGRP or explain what the output of sh tech means, but you will be up and running in no time. I only had to read one chapter to get everything configured and integrated into my main global network.

Do yourself a favor and read it thoroughly before starting a configuration using a GUI tool. There is a lot more you need to know than you might believe otherwise.

So just how much do I like this book? I am not willing to sell it!

It will Become a Best Seller
I have just read the first four chapters, but I have already formed an opinion: This book will become a best seller. The author explains the stuff in the way I want it. Thank you for wiriting this book.

Outstanding Book
This was an outstanding book with the little knowledge I had already on Cisco routers. This books brought me up to speed in a hurt in a fun easy to read type book. I loved it. And I look forward to reading more of the Practical Series of books from QUE.

The Pythagorean Solution

Non-stop Suspense in the Greek Isles
Pythagorean Solution is a non-stop thrill ride set in modern day Greece. What I loved about this story is the main character is believeable, not some super human who I couldn't identify with. The story moves you along from one exciitng scene to the next - the story has everything! Lost gold, beautiful Aegean setting, humor, international intrigue, a love story, and a treasure hunt! For a first novel, Badal hit a home run; can't wait for his next thriller. I couldn't put the book down. Enjoy!

Exciting and face-paced
A very impressive first novel and the perfect summer read. Plot, characters, fabulous Aegean location, non-stop action, love interest, I don't see how it can miss as a movie; the screenplay writes itself. If this doesn't end up on the screen, the author needs to find himself a new agent. I like face-paced books, and this one is warp speed all the way. Hang on!

Exciting Story - Great Characters.
While I usually prefer American-set mysteries, skimming 'The Pythagorean Solution' gave me confidence to buy it - and I am glad I did. A distinctive, literate prose style and interesting, diverse characters that continually reveal themselves are what I look for in any book - and Badal delivers on both counts. The mystery itself has a compact, well-told story that never disappoints and has enough twists to keep you going without ever feeling forced. The Greek setting is a big plus; if you have ever visited the Greek Isles, it will bring back memories and if you have not, it will make you want to go. On the dust jacket, Tony Hillerman says he's looking forward to this novice novelist's next book. Well, so am I.

Raging Bull: My Story
Published in Paperback by DaCapo Press (1997)
Authors: Jake LA Motta, Joseph Carter, and Peter Savage
Amazon base price: $11.55
List price: $16.50 (that's 30% off!)
Average review score:

frightening rage
jake lamotta might be the most eloquent, honest, and despicable man i have ever been exposed to. oddly enough, as much as i hated him throughout his story, i wanted him to win all his fights. it is the straight ahead grit he showed as a fighter and as a storyteller that kept audiences of these two mediums spellbound, amazed, and saddened.

Rousseau's Confessions Bronx-Style
One cannot help but admire the unflinching honesty of Jake La Motta in his autobiography. This book isn't merely a self-serving recounting of La Motta's rise and fall as a boxer. Instead, La Motta creates a geniune classic. There is no air brushing here. La Motta reveals the deepest, darkest secrets of his life: his murder attempt, raping of a virgin, his impotence, domestic violence etc. As a result, one begins to understand his fears and the utter rage that drove him as a boxer. LaMotta also helps explain something about boxing - that mixture of beauty and violence. La Motta's own honesty is the redeeming quality that delivers the book its greatness. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Packs the Same Wallop as La Motta's Ring Punch
Jake La Motta made a good living punching people in the ring, rising in 1949 to the world middleweight championship. He packs the same wallop in his book "Raging Bull," the basis for the powerful 1980 film which was directed by Martin Scorsese and earned Robert De Niro an Oscar for Best Actor.

La Motta paints a brutally vivid picture of a youngster and young man growing up in a brutal Bronx jungle. The fighter they called "The Bronx Bull" writes about seeing rats in the cellar of the tenament where he grew up that were the size of cats. The neighborhood in which he grew up was so tough that he had thousands of fights, explaining that by the time he laced on gloves and became a boxer such conflict had become totally routine. To La Motta a fight was as commonplace as anyone else brushing their teeth, a simple, elementary part of life. He writes about his early life of crime, including the beating of one man he thought he had killed. In perhaps the most dramatic sequence of the book he reveals how he had lived in morbid fear of being apprehended for murder and in guilt for the act itself, after which he was shocked when the man he was convinced he had killed surfaces. Unaware that La Motta was his attacker, the man surfaces in Detroit to wish the fighter luck as he prepares for his winning title bout against champion Marcel Cerdan of France. The man explains that he was hurt badly but finally recovered, and is in town to wish someone from his old neighborhood luck in his title pursuit.

The raw power of the lightning narrative, along with its brutally realistic truth, makes "Raging Bull" one of the all- time great sports books, a true American classic.

From the Privates View
It was so fun to read a book on the Revolutionary War that was from the view of the private. No huge battles here, just the day to day struggle on what he endured and why he endured all the hardships. Made me really admire the commitment they made.

Great Book!
This book is one of the few complete accounts of a common soldier
in the American Revolution. Joseph Plumb Martin explains in detail the events that take place at Valley Forge, Trenton, and
Yorktown. Mr. Martin first published his narratives as a book titled Private Yankee Doodle. This book is a book that shows the suffering and victory of the young nation. Great for anyone who loves histoy!

Richard Neutra
Published in Unknown Binding by Simon and Schuster ()
Author: Richard Joseph Neutra
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Rather good...for the most part
This book is amazing though the photos of Neutra's projects are generally not as large as one would hope. It is amazing how much Neutra created during his career. A brilliant book filled with insightful information and general floor plans of building projects. Best of all, there is even a map as to the location of his buildings.

LUXURY EDITION CONTAINING ALL WORKS OF GREAT MODERNIST MASTE
This luxe volume traces the entire career of the great Richard Neutra (1892 - 1970), whose work symbolizes Modernist splendor in all its glory. Highly acclaimed for his designs of California residences, Neutra is one of the most important architects of the century and well deserving of this stunning tribute.

Originally from Vienna, Neutra came to America early in his career, settling on the West Coast. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape of California being a particularly suitable setting for his cool, sleek modern style. Neutra had a keen appreciation of the relationship between people and nature and his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs effectively connect the indoors with the outdoors. His ability to incorporate technology, aesthetics, science, and nature into his designs brought him to the forefront of Modernist architecture.

For the first time, all of Neutra's works (nearly 300 private homes, schools, and public buildings) are gathered together in one volume, illustrated with over 1,000 photographs, including those of Julius Shulman and other prominent photographers. This is the essential reference book for fans of Neutra's work.

The horizontal 11.5" x 16" format shows the buildings to extraordinarily good advantage. This special volume with a blond wood cover is both an architecture lover's and book collector's dream.

One of the great architecture books!
Barbara Lamprecht and Julius Shulman have created one the great architecture books about this leading figure of 20th century modernism. As a fan of Lamprecht's excellent writing, the text in this book is, of course, excellent---full of information, opinion and wit. The depth of information provided, including floor plans, is rare in an architectural photo book. Shulman's photos (and some by the new architectural photo star--John Ellis) are superb. The very large format of this book shows off the beautiful buildings to their best advantage. The real wood cover seems a bit odd for a book on Neutra, but it certainly is handsomely impressive. Though [the price] is a a lot for a book, this one's worth it. Buy it now. The second edition might not be so large and impressive, and certainly won't be made of wood!
