This is a book about love, violence, the outsider against society: the forbidden love of Tristan and Isolde, the problem violence in Boiardo's Orlando in Love, Ariosto's analysis of women and society, Spenser in Ireland, and Shakespeare's use of the old romance trope of the custom of the castle.

Puts a human face on Darwin
Very interesting and readable account of how Darwin's views on religion and evolution developed over the course of his life. As well as being a towering figure in modern science, Darwin was also a highly principled and compassionate person, as this book makes clear. He struggled all his life with the contradiction between the orthodox Christianity he espoused as a young man and the ideas that science inevitably lead him to, and this may have been a factor in his persistent ill health. It is outrageous that a man as brilliant and humble as Darwin has been so villified by ignorant bigots with anti-scientific agendas. Far from being a racist as hypocritical biblical creationsists often claim, Darwin hated racism and slavery, and longed for the day when all men would see each other as brothers:

"As man advances in civilisation, and small tribes are united into larger communities, the simplest reason would tell each individual that he ought to extend his social instincts and sympathies to all the members of the same nation, though personally unknown to him. This point being reached, there is only an artificial barrier to prevent his sympathies extending to the men of all nations and races." (The Descent of Man)

Darwin (and Phipps) also explode the idea that the theory of evolution preaches selfishness and apathy towards one's fellows:

"Darwin thought of humans more as protectors of one another than as predators on one another. When two tribes are in competition, he stated, the one that warns its members of danger and engages in mutual defense is more likely to succeed. The 'fittest' are not necessarily the brawniest, nor even those who sire the most offspring, but those who live cooperatively." (Chapter 6)

The point is also made that a god-magician who must continually interfere with the universe in order to keep it going smoothly is less worthy of worship than one who works indirectly by allowing the full potential of the universe to unfold through scientific law - a point always lost on the biblical creationists. It's a pity that these "creationists" are the people who most need to read this book but are the least likely to do so.

A great book for young pastors
After reading what pastoring was all about I felt that the way most pastors are running the church today is totally out of order. We are not to be lord's over God's heritage, but servants to God's people. Not bosses, CEOs, not employers, but servants....this is a great book!

really great
Of the several Dover scores which I have this is the most 'readable' and, by far, the most usable by all family members. Scores by Bach and Couperin are way too ornamented. and grace noted for an amateur. The Rameau and Purcell texts by Dover are not too bad but the Byrd is beyond the average player. This book is not, however. There is stuff not much more demanding then '10 little fingers' and others hard enough to keep you working on them for hours. If you looking for some fun scores that are reasonably accessible and feature 'unique' music buy this one. As a hint: look at the book, 'The Baroque Pianist' for a little later music scores....

I bought this for both sets of parents!
There are a lot of retirement books out there, so I went with the one with a recognizable name and I'm glad I did. My parents haven't thought enough about retirement and I wanted to spur them to action. They were pleased to find out that there were many things they could do now, even at this late date, to help them, and they even starting giving me tips on ways I could start planning. So then I gave this book to my husband's parents who are already retired, and they ended up buying it for friends too. There are tons of tips, easy things you can do, worksheets, charts, action lists, tips--even a section on how to overcome adverse events like losing your job and divorce. It is worth the read. You'll learn a lot and be happy you did.

Stunning
Dr. Crosby manages to translate from one language to another while maintain CB's original rhythm and rhyme scheme. The dark musk of CB's words are undiminished.
