Should be required reading in every Christian school
I thought I was a well read Christian, but I had never even heard of this book. A dear friend recommended it, saying it had helped her in her spiritual growth and progress.

I was not able to find this book anywhere in the St. Louis area libraries, so I purchased this copy.

About the book - I found it to be an incredibly helpful resource in gaining a deeper understanding of our spiritual mission on this earth. And it is a very interesting book.

The author really lays her heart on the line - and tells in wonderfully frank language how hard it is to truly live the spiritual axiom - "Not my will - but thine be done."

And it also sums up Maya Angelou's maxim that "we are all more alike than we are different."

"Stepping Heavenward" was so close to my own life that I felt compelled to keep reading it and find out how everything turned out! I read the book in two days, snatching every spare moment I could to race back to the book and see what happened next!

I loved it. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. In fact, I'm buying more copies for Christmas presents and I've handed it off to a school teacher hoping that she'll consider putting it on the required reading list.

If you only buy three Christian books this year - I'd recommend this book, Stepping Heavenward, along with "What's so Amazing About Grace" and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."

Three powerful books. Along with the Bible, of course, but EVERYONE has a Bible. :-)

If you order "Stepping Heavenward" you won't be disappointed. And if you are, donate it to the local library. This book will be the answer to many people's prayers.

A wonderful look at the very real struggles Christians face
I am not quite finished with this book, but have thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. In the 270+ pages I have read, Mrs. Prentiss has shown an astounding ability to put into words the struggles that I believe are universal for men and women who desire to live out their faith in Christ, yet who are continually confronted with their flawed humanity, i.e., sin!

There is humor, seriousness, sadness--all the emotions one can imagine, since the book is designed to depict the different eras of a woman's life from age 16 onward, through courtship, marriage, and motherhood. I eagerly anticipate finishing the book, and then picking it up again and again as I go through my own life. I plan to have my teenage daughter read it, and will suggest it as a must-read to all my friends.

Life Changing Book
This book has changed my life. Since reading it, I have gained new insight in my walk with Christ and how to live.
I have a new appreciation for faith, happiness, and sorrow.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is just beginning or has been walking with God for quite some time. I have two children and I l feel new
enthusiasm and peace that I've never felt before when we are together. Buy this book, read it, and use it as a reference!

absolutely remarkable!!!
this is definitely one of the best books i have read so far.the author has done a great job with this book. i loved the tension between jane and adam at the beginning and how they eventually developed feelings for each other at the end. very well written, not to mention sweet, funny and addictive. once i started reading i couldn't stop! i also loved the chemistry between jane's cousin, stacy and coach 'grizzly'. a must read!!

I Do was Amazing!
This is definitly one of the best stories in the series! Elizabeth Chandler did a great job with this book. It's full of twists and unexpected surprises. My favorite scene is the one-on-one lacrosse match between Adam and Jane(Daisy). If you enjoy reading romance novels, this is the book for you! Even if you hate to read, try it because I know you'll love it too.

My absolute fave!
I Do is my absolute favorite Love Stories book.

Jane and Adam are worst enemies. Adam is the school's star lacrosse player. And Jane, who is the school's top sports reporter, is his harshest critic. Unfortunately it turns out they are going to be in Jane's cousin and Adam's step-brother's wedding as the maid of honor and the best man. As they get thrown together in hilarious situation after situation they inevitabley get to know each other better and start to fall in love...

OMG! This book is the best. Can anyone say soulmates? I love the way Adam and Jane were just absolutely perfect for each other. If they were real people you know this would be a relationship that would last. Make sure to read Chandler's other books.

Knock-out content, but...
At last: A book for intermediate, publishing writers who are wanting to step up to the next level! This book is gold, filled with page after page of real-world examples, firsthand advice, and solid information for selling to the editors of women's magazines.

But...the author has been done a serious disservice by her publisher. The typeface is almost painful to read, typos occur on just about every other page, and the layout is amateurish, as if this were a beginning designer's first experience with QuarkXpress. (The cover, on the other hand, is absolutely perfect for this book.)

So, if you write to publish, buy this book. Buy copies for your writing friends. Tell the world. It's that good. (And it begs the question: "Why hasn't anybody done this before?!") But warn 'em to stock up on strong lightbulbs, aspirin, and a fair amount of patience to do battle with the printed page.

Fabulous! A terrific book for any freelance writer.
Do you want to sell an article to Reader's Digest? McCalls? Learn how to target each magazine by reading FEMININE WILES. Filled with practical, fresh advice for writers, the book offers lively, concrete examples and anecdotes to illustrate secret tips to writing and selling in this competitive market. Boetig simplifies the structure for articles which makes a great "how to." This book is a "must" for any freelance writer.

A godsend for my career
During the past year, I have ventured into the realm of writing feature articles. I have read as many books as I can find time for but haven't found one that got right to the point on what I need to do to SELL my work. Until now ... Boetig's book gets right to the point about how to make all my hard work pay off. Most other writing books are full of "you could" and "you may want to". Boetig gets right to the point and tells me what worked for, what didn't, what to avoid, and what to steer towards. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a successful writer.

A Perfect Romantic Fantasy
Outstanding! This was one of the best romance novels that I have ever read. The characters were interesting and appealing; the story was original and creative.

The heroine is Amber the Untouched, so named because of her special affinity to amber -- all things amber belong to her -- and because of her special ability to feel the emotions of others by touching them. Lowell thoroughly explores both the advantages and the drawbacks of such an ability. The hero, Duncan of Maxwell, the Scots Hammer (his name is charming and lyrical, like much of the writing in this book) is the perfect combination of strength and sensitivity. The amber prophecy, the revelation that attended Amber's birth, defines the cosmology of the book. As a lover of fantasy, I was totally captivated by it! Amber and Duncan's story is gracefully and beautifully told.

Like everyone else, I can't wait for Erik's story!

A Wonderful Medieval Novel
This is the second in Lowell's trilogy and it is wonderful. I read "Untamed" first and then I read this book in ONE DAY...it was that good. The story of Duncan and Amber had me hooked from the first page..what a tale! You actually felt like you were living in this time period with them. I can't pick a favorite of the trilogy but "Forbidden' ranks up there at the top. I hope a fourth book is made!

A Great Love Story
I loved this book. This is one of those books I pull out and read when I am in the mood for an awesome love story.

The story of Amber and Duncan is fantastic. Amber is called the untouched because nobody can touch her as she has a special gift. Then along comes Duncan who has been injured and has no memory of his past life. When he is found, he is naked except for an amber pendant and all things amber belong to Amber. I liked the way their story developed as they got to know each other and how Amber fought to have what she felt was hers.

I really liked the way Duncan was developed from the first book in this series and I loved the introduction of Amber, Cassandra and Erik. I also found it enjoyable how previous characters from the first book, Enchanted, were brought in to this story.

My only wish now is that Erik's story would come out!! This man is a great story waiting to happen!

A great book for a great price!!
In preparing our list of Christmas books to share with others, we had to search far and wide on amazon to find this particular book, a paperback edition of the classic Night Before Christmas.

This is the book I've used for years when reading this story to my own children, passing on Tasha Tudor and other illustrators. Why?

Although we can find the same poem and pay a lot more, with award winning illustrators, the illustrations provided by Douglas Gorsline are surely the best. They are quite colorful, and offer details little children love looking into...cats lie sleepily on the window sill, we see an overview of the town, the presents spilling from the open sack are intriguing and plentiful, and Jolly St. Nick is -- well, quite Jolly (as you can see by looking at the cover!)

The story is an "abridged version" - I'm not sure about other parents, but we read this on Christmas Eve, and we only have so much time and energy. Everything we remember from the classic poem by Clement Clarke Moore is in this version.

(From "'Twas the Night Before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse" to "He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,"HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!" In between we have everything, from the names of the eight tiny reindeer, to a belly that shakes like a bowl full of jelly, including dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky".

In other words, don't be scared off by 'abridged'!)

Perhaps a hardcover edition might be more appropriate if you're giving a gift (unless you're giving to more than one child), but this book is one of the best offers we've found!

A classic done simply and inexpensively!

The Night Before Christmas illustrated by Tasha Tudor
I discovered this book 31 years ago, for my daughter and it is still loved by all the family. The illustrations are wonderful, warm, charming and delightful and bring a special meaning to the story. We still read it to all the young children on Christmas Eve and for adults we read the story and pass a grab bag gift every time the word THE is mentioned. It would not be Christmas without this book. It is magical.

A beautiful edition, to give as a gift
We have an inexpensive paperback version (see our reviews) of this classic poem, and we said that's enough for us. That was before we looked through this beautifully illustrated (by Bruce Whatley) edition of The Night Before Christmas.

The lyrics are the same, from book to book, but the fanciful illustrations in this one are enough to engage adults and children as they read this book together.

The perfect gift for any family whose Christmas tradition includes reading this classic!

--Thrilling Story--
I'm so delighted that I discovered these Vicky Bliss mysteries. The characters are good and Elizabeth Peters always provides fascinating settings for her stories.

In NIGHT TRAIN TO MEMPHIS, Vicky Bliss is asked by a police agency to be a part of a tour group as they cruise down the Nile River seeing the beautiful monuments and ancient pyramids of Egypt. The police suspect that some professional thieves will be on board and hope that Vicky can assist in identifying them. The characters are diverse and of course, Sir John Smythe also shows up for the tour. Vicky's dismayed to find him using a different name and traveling with a sweet young woman. Just a few months before the tour, John and Vicky had resumed their love affair and now she's thoroughly confused by the way that he's acting. There are a lot of surprises in this story.

I found it amazing to see that out of 32 reviews on this book, 30 reviewers gave this story a Five Star Rating. That has got to be some kind of a record. It shows what an excellent writer that Elizabeth Peters is and how she always delivers great fiction.

A humorous tale of adventure, archaeology, and romance...
Elizabeth Peters is in fine form in this novel of intrigue, suspense, and love! The heroine, Dr. Vicky Bliss, an expert on Medieval art, is asked to join a cruise down the Nile to try and identify a thief, and a clever and exciting story winds all over Egypt. As always, the characters make the story and "Sir John" steals every scene. There are numerous plot twists and touches of Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers which enrich this highly entertaining tale. Peters skillfully entwines wit and wisdom with passion, Egyptology, and murder.
Fans of Peters will really enjoy this book with each re-reading. The plot creation and character development are some of her best, and her humorous style makes one laugh even in the moments of greatest suspense!

A fantastic book!
Having long been a fan of Elizabeth Peters, I was ecstatic when "Night Train to Memphis", the fifth book in her Vicky Bliss series came out.

A continuation of the adventures of Doctor Vicky Bliss, a museum worker in Munich, this book follows her on a cruise down the Nile, takes her all over the Egyptian countryside, and finally ends where it started --- in Vicky's German apartment. Along the way, several recurring characters show up, including old friends and villains, the irrepressible Schmidt, and of course, Sir John Smythe; the quintessential gentleman thief and Vicky's sometimes lover. This time however, there is a small complication affecting their relationship, which leads to the miscommunication, misinterpreted signals, and missed chances that characterize Peter's books ---- and make them some of the most enjoyable mysteries on the market. The insults are quick, the Egyptology casual and comprehensive, and country music references abound.

This is a wonderful book, featuring yet another strong, smart, feminist heroine, who never crosses the line from aggressive to unlikable. While "Night Train to Memphis" can definitely stand alone, I would also reccomend the first couple of books about Vicky, "Borrower of the Night", "The Street of Five Moons", "Sillhouette in Scarlet", and "Trogan Gold".

Hess makes you rethink what you know of pets & their humans!
Lost & Found is the type of book that makes you relearn all that you thought you knew of the subject. Whether it be pets, shelters, breeders or adopters. In a personal and poignant tale of animals and their trials, tribulations and rewards, Hess opens up to us the world of life in a small upstate New York animal shelter. She doesn't just focus on the animals, but leads you on a trip through our society. From the story of the one lady's repeated animal abuses and thus, insight to her character, to the love of all the shelter dogs for the giving gentleman that walks every dog, every day. Hess writes about the people that most make a difference in animals' lives, both good and bad, and presents an amazingly open look at the reality of euthenasia. Whatever you know of shelters, pets, people and love, this is a book that will help you learn more. I would highly recomend this books to all pet "owners", those considering getting a pet, animal lovers, and anyone searching for true heroes in todays society.

Required reading for all current and wannabe pet owners
Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. I'm among those who do know what kind of responsibility it takes to own a dog. I'm the happy 'Mom' of 2 terriers, one of which is a rescue dog. It is true about rescued animals - they know they've been given another chance and will give you their love many times over.

Elizabeth Hess was down to earth in showing the trials and successes an animal shelter goes through. If you know someone who's not sure about getting a pet, I highly suggest they read this book. It'll make them think twice. If you know someone with misconceptions that all shelter animals get homes, give them this book as a wakeup call! A pet can take up as much or more of your time than a human baby, but the human race has made dogs, cats and other animals disposeable. There are happy endings as well as sad in the book, but it's worth buying. As the kids would say, we give it a 2 paws up!

Can't Put It Down, Want More Pets!
This book is a moving, well written and ultimately very human account of what happens in a rural animal shelter. The animal stories are fascinating - whether you are a lover of a specific breed or an appreciator of shelter dogs and cats (as I am!), you will find an animal in these pages to touch your heart. In addition, the dedication of the volunteers and the I am sure, highly underpaid staff that helps rescue, care and love these animals is inspiring.

The only hitch that I sort of noticed was Ms. Hess' seeming bias towards Pit Bulls, speaking in somewhat degrading terms about them and even making a sideways comment about an "infestation". She does redeem herself in the end, noting that they are extremely loyal dogs. As someone who is owned by a boxer/pit bull shelter dog, I can truly attest to their undying loyalty, gentleness and ease with adults and children alike (though most don't like other dogs). Most shelters are teeming with pit bulls who bark all day because of other dogs and look ferocious. Too many of these beautiful animals are euthanized every day. Please consider this breed!

She raises another important point about black cats (a black cat currently runs my household, she's in charge of everything, including the pit bull) ... there are many of them and people still see them as "bad luck". I have had nothing but good luck since Ms. Jen came along ... just something to think about (I never knew I had the two toughest shelter cases living in my home!)

All in all, this book with make you think about shelter animals and the benefits of adopting one, as well as the responsibilities of pet ownership and the growing cat/dog overpopulation crisis. Read it, then responsibly adopt a pet. Like a pit bull or a black cat.

Awesome Book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is one of the best books I have read Actually it is the best book I have ever read.It is about this girl Allie Parker who is going home for Christmas vacation she doesn't really want to go but she ends up going after all. When she goes to the rest stop on her way home she meets cute Ben Harrington and his little brother Tim.Later she finds out that they are going her way since by this time Tim has this huge crush on her he is really happy, but Ben isn't. Allie has two gorgeous twin sisters and soon finds out because of them and their superficial friends that Ben was a star jock when he went to school there. Well enough of this story if you want to know more you are just going to have to read the book The only thing I can tell you is that it's a wonderful book and it is really fun reading it. I know everyone who reads it will love it as much as I did maybe even more no I don't think anyone can like it more than I already do. Happy reading:))!!!!!!!!!

I LOVED IT!
this book is great- one of the best Love Stories. it's so sweet, i just really liked the things he said to her, and the way that he treated her. she is so lucky to get a guy like that!

Better than i thought it would be
I have to admit, Im adicted to these books. But this one was better than I thought it would be. I when I first read the back cover, I thought that the storyline was kind of cheesey, but I read it anyway. I didn't really like it until the end though, when Ben told Allie that everytime he saw a silver car, he hoped it was her, and how he got jealous of Tim everytime she put her arm around him.

Now Im gonna tell you: YHTRTB (You Have To Read This Book)

Excellent Parenting Advice!
I found this book very positive and helpful, much like "How to Talk so your Kids will Listen and listen so Kids will Talk". It teaches a balanced parenting approach, which is neither permissive/democratic or autocratic. The author shows parents how to take charge and provide the consistant structure that children need with confidence. Countless examples are used throughout the book.

Many different skills are explained, teaching parents the difference between discipline and punishment. Listed to are the many disadvantages and counter productive negative effects of spanking.

There is good advice for nurturing sibling relationships, understanding and coping with anger, and how important it is for parents to look after themselves as well. The last part of the book is devoted to providing ideas for dealing with all the common discipline situations such as homework, bedtime, mornings, interrupting, meal times, tantrums etc..
I have recently read Elizabeth Pantley's book on sleep, "The No-Cry Sleep Solution" which is also a wonderful book.

I would also hightly recommend reading "Setting Limits: How to Raise Responsible, Independent, Children by Providing Clear Boundaries" by Robert J MacKenzie.

Life changing! A "must have" book for all parents!
Parenting would have to be the most difficult (yet rewarding!) job in the world. Of all parenting challenges, discipline is probably at the top of most parents' list. Every parent wants to raise kids who are responsible and caring people. But HOW on earth are we supposed to achieve this? Often the only blueprint we have for discipline comes from our own parents, and involves methods such as spanking and shouting, which are neither effective nor respectful to children.

Thank goodness for Elizabeth Pantley and her wonderful book Kid Cooperation: How to stop yelling, nagging and pleading and get kids to cooperate! I must admit to being somewhat sceptical when I come across claims such as those in this book title. "If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is", rings in my ears. However, I am DELIGHTED to be able to say that this book not only lives up these claims but MORE.

In Kid Cooperation, Elizabeth Pantley shares parenting skills that are LIFE CHANGING! I do not say that lightly! This book will change your life! The wonderful thing is that the skills outlined are easy to learn and implement, they actually WORK, and probably most importantly in my opinion, they are kind to and respectful of children. Elizabeth's style is very readable, positive and not at all preachy. She allows you to determine areas needing improvement in a way that leaves you feeling both hopeful and positive.

The first chapter comprises a quiz to determine your current discipline style. Are you permissive, democratic, balanced or autocratic? (I erred on the "too democratic" side!) The good news is that, whatever your current style, you CAN find help in this wonderful book.

The remaining chapters contain the gems of wisdom which fulfil the claims on the front cover! Chapter 2 teaches the keys to successful parenting - take charge; think; when you say it, mean it; use skill. Chapter 3 covers cooperation and how to achieve it in your home. Chapter 4 discusses punishment versus discipline. Chapter 5 teaches ways to build your child's self-esteem. Chapter 6 is all about sibling relationships. Chapter 7 deals with parent anger. Chapter 8 discusses ways to look after yourself and the relationship with your parenting partner. Chapter 9 consists of some common discipline questions with several suggestions on how to deal effectively with each. Each chapter ends with a very helpful "reminder page", which can be copied and placed in appropriate spots around the home. This really makes learning the new skills manageable!

Throughout the book, examples of situations and dialogue (some from the author's own family experiences) make understanding easy. Many readers will see themselves and their kids in the examples (I know I did!) Elizabeth makes it simple to identify ineffective parenting AND to replace it with techniques that actually WORK. I have personally used many of the skills taught in this book with my own child and am thrilled to report the improvement in harmony in our household. Some examples which have been particularly useful to us are the "5-3-1-go" (when leaving a playground for example), making objects talk (great for things like teeth cleaning time!), and using happy faces and sad faces on a daily chart.

I thoroughly recommend this book! My ONLY complaint is that I didn't get it when my child was younger!

The only parenting book you'll need!
The minute I saw this book on the shelf I had to have it. I wanted to stop yelling, nagging, pleading and get my kids to cooperate. Who wouldn't? I have three children and have been using the many ideas in this book since I purchased it a year and a half ago. Each time I read it - either cover to cover or just glancing over the great reminder pages - I gain more useful ideas to help me be a successful parent. As my children enter new stages in their life and new parenting challenges are faced, I have the confidence to tackle them head-on by using the techniques that I have learned in this book. I have recommended Kid Cooperation to all my friends and I highly recommend it to you as well. I can't imagine what my family life would be like if it wasn't for this first rate parenting book. It is a must have for every parent.

A good book on hormones for women
This is an update of the 1st "Screaming..." book. The update is good even if you have the original one. I have both. A couple of COMPLAINTS:

#1: Dr. Vliet really needs to improve the index in both books. Has she considered Microsoft Word? MS Word can create an index. The index stinks! I've ended up reading, and then adding / creating my own index. It is hard to find stuff in her book.
#2: For some reason, she doesn't like compounding pharmacies that will actually talk directly to patients about hormone protocols, etc. She seems to favor compounding pharmacies that leave every decision up to the doctor. This seems very limiting in that every woman should be as educated as possible, and have as much freedom as possible with deciding her own treatment. After all, how would we feel if someone told us that each week they'd be controlling and deciding on what we were going to buy at the grocery store?!?

But, overall, since the issue of hormone replacement is a complicated one, this is CERTAINLY a book you need to have. I would highly recommend both "Screaming..." books. Also look at Gillian Ford's "Listening to Your Hormones". Great book, also!

An answer to a prayer!!!
I am by no means a religious woman. But one evening, as I was feeling particularly exhausted, I got on my hands and knees and prayed to God that I would find a way out of this physical hell that I had been experiencidng since the birth of my daughter 3 1/2 years ago. Literally, within days, I found myself on the telephone with a childhood friend telling her of my troubles. I told her all about the extreme fatigue, the anxiety, the lack of motivation and spark in my life, the decreased sexual desire and the headaches. I was so relieved when she confided that she too had experienced similar symptoms but that there was a way out and a light at the end of the tunnel. That light is Dr. Vliet. My friend recommended that I buy Dr. Vliet's book which I promptly did. After having read "Screaming To Be Heard", I educated myself, then I insisted on having my hormone levels tested. What I found out is that EVEN at 34 years old hormone levels can have a profound effect on a woman's health. Dr. Vliet teaches us in this amazing book to listen to our body's wisdom. Having found this book truly was an answer to a prayer....I am on my way!!

If you are a woman, READ THIS BOOK!
After over 12 yrs of doctors telling me my fatique was depression, lack of sleep, my imagination, nothing at all, etc.... I was so very fortunate to find this book. Dr. Vliet addresses so many problems that women have due to hormonal problems.

Do not underestimate the importance of hormones! I had a complete hysterectomy 13 yrs ago and about 12 yrs ago began having severe fatique, mental fuzziness, memory problems, bladder problems, headaches, plus other problems. Every doctor I went to see never even addressed these problems as hormonal. Although I was on hormonal therapy, my various combinations just did not help enough. I knew something was not right, but trying to tell your doctor that you know what the problem is just does not work, or it did not work for me. Most of the doctors I saw did not take my symptoms seriously and thus I searched for 12 yrs for help.

Then I read Dr. Vliet's book and all of my questions and concerns were answered! Everything began to make sense. I cannot stress this enough - IF YOU ARE A WOMAN, READ THIS BOOK!
