E Dolphy was my hero. I was at the Wuppertal concert in 64.
I have been a professional jazz musician for as long as I remember. But it wasn't untill the concert in 1964 just before Eric Dol;phy died that I became serious in my approach to practice. The concert took place in Wuppertal in Germany with Charles Mingus. Johnny Coles was on Trumpet, Jacky Byard on piano. The others I forget. Danny Richmond on drums. The audience was so jammed into the town hall that everybody was standing for the entire performance. It was such a moving experience that there was almost no applause. This must have been very disturbing to the musicians. At one point Erics Bass Clarinet fell off its stand and he spent no little time examining it to make sure it was ok. The concert was an experience that I will never forget because it quite literaly changed my life. This was because of one tune that Dolphy and Mingus played as an encore , also as a duet on flute and arco bass. This was "what love" So wonderful was this presentation that people where openly crying with emotion. It is perhaps difficult to explain the impact of musicians who can bring about such feelings in an audience. and it is indeed a rare thing to experience within any artistic performance. To listen to artists on record does not do the true greats justice. Suffice to say that for me I became a serious jazz musician from that day forward. People. myself included where still choked up even after leaving the town hall and walking out into the afternoon sunshine. Little did we know how prophetic our tears were because less than one month later Eric Dolphy died in Berlin. I can only owe this wonderful human being, Eric Dolphy a reason and a shape for all of my life. from that day untill whenever. Grahame Rhodes Jazz Musician Sat 13 march 1999

A quick, absorbing, read
I haven't gotten to "The Long Road Ahead" yet, but the first novella, "Escape Hatch" was so moving and engrossing that I finished it (after an intense morning with it glued to my fingers) changed. What struck me most about the work is how it refuses to pass judgement on its characters-- no one is good or evil, but everyone is lost, everyone is stuck in a world they don't want to be in. And the passages with the retarded son were especially touching. Read this story.

Enlightening
There's so much to learn about event sponsorship. It was interesting to see the various views of the industry, including how to expand the value of the sponsor, as well as the image of the actual event.

Great book
Library Journal's review of this guide: "Combining encyclopedic coverage of destinations with loads of practical information and atlas-type maps, the series illuminates the wonders of nature but emphasizes the peculiarity of a place's people and their folklore."

Fine Art of Russian Lacquered Miniatures

collectible traditional Russian art
This is a large, excellent book on the traditional Russian art of lacquered miniature painting. Over 250 color reproductions of the works of Masters are featured. This is really the definitive book on the craft. The art is famous for its tiny, but finely-detailed illustrations of folk tales or village life, painted free-hand with a homemade brush of a single squirrel or sable hair. Real gold leaf and mother-of-pearl insets add to the beauty and value of the paintings, which are created on papier-mache' shkatulki (boxes) or plaques. Many layers of lacquer finish the artwork, giving it a long-lasting, lustrous, three-dimensional quality (and incidentally, its name). Each creation can take several months, or as much as a year, to complete. Some of the rarest, most magnificent paintings are presented in these pages. The book contains a history of the craft and its Masters. Also included are short essays on each of the four schools -- the villages of Palekh, Kholui, Mstera, and Fedoskino -- which have produced generations of painters in this enduring and endearing folk art.

A practical guide for deepening your relationships
The capability to love is learned in stages... Attraction is the starting point toward a deeper, more spiritual connection with your partner. Self-less love for all (family, friends, neighbors, even enemies) can be learned and practiced, with the guidance of learned people and writings like this book. The view that the love we experience in our life is a gift from God opens opportunities for us to be kind and let ourselves be loved. "The Gift of Love" is a collection of short essays on quotations from the Bible concerning love, that can be read in any order. The interpretation is given from a Christian Orthodox perspective, keeping alive today the intense spirituality experienced by the early Church, during Roman persecutions and the various predatory invasions that swept Eastern and Western Europe in the Middle Ages. This book brought to my attention I Corinthians 13 :-)
Heavenly Balkans

Poetry that is spare, sharp, and unfailingly wise.
"Dreams are commercials, too./But we don't know what they are pleading for." Vladimir Levchev, a renowned poet, novelist and editor in his native Bulgaria, proves his mastery of his adopted language in "Heavenly Balkans," an uncommonly astute and striking chapbook of poems. As an Eastern European poet, Levchev had to learn much more quickly about the reality of history and politics than American poets do, and he demonstrates this in such poems as "The Balkan Dance": "We are dancing towards a new millennium/and all we can see in our future/is our past." But he also writes perceptively of America in such poems as "Washington, D.C.," in which he observes that "Freedom has countless swaying faces," and in "No Man is an Island," observing that "We all live in Manhattan" in the aftermath of 9/11. This is a small book--only 40 pages--but the poetry in it is big.

essential reading for admirers of Horowitz
This is perhaps the most in-depth and detailed biography of Horowitz. From this book you can learn much about Horowitz's psychological and emotional worlds (and even his homosexuality), as well as details of his career. The only drawback is that this book is completed before Horowitz's death, so there are a few years of his life that this book doesn't cover. If you plan to get only one biography of Horowitz, I'll recommend the one by Harold C. Schonberg.
Hydridic Earth: The New Geology of Our Primordially Hydrogen Rich Planet

Hydrogen as the agent of geological endogeny -
In the late sixties the author discovered that hydrogen under pressure mobilizes otherwise rigid crystalline, rock-forming elements. This book explores the profound geological consequences of the phenomenon, essentially creating entirely new geological theory. Any serious student of the earth must take into account Vladimir Larin's challenges to orthodoxy.
