A terrific first novel by a promising new author
A grim reminder that free will and pre-determinism are more closely linked than we imagine. A morality play engined out in the confines of the Las Vegas dead zone, where violence and tension are not devices used in the narrative, but Gods that watch over the proceedings on every page, never leaving the stage. A disturbing, sometimes difficult book, but intelligent--never condescending or exploitive.

A good book on Numerical Analysis to start with.
A very good book to start with. Very Mathematical in its approach. Not much of implementation. But will help you do your own implementation. For people who what to learn the basics and try implementing themselves. Not for people who want ready made soup.

Good book to take your presentations to the next level
I found this book when looking for something above the many "basic" presentation skills books that are out there - and this book delivers.
Ralph covers the various voice qualities in detail, and the impact these qualities has on audience perception. He covers how to add more variety to your voice via rate, pitch and volume - each are covered in detail along with when to vary these for effect.
Ralph also covers how to support your voice, and then goes into the technical aspects of voice production and phonetics (via the International Phonetic Alphabet - or IPA).
The book finishes with tips on dress, movement, eye contact, external factors, health and practice. It also includes 27 exercises designed to improve your voice and overall presentation technique.
Overall this book provides much information that can help take your presentation style to the next level.

Really gets you thinking...
It is a shame that this book is now out of print. It should be required reading for all public policy majors, political science buffs and anyone working in foreign policy.

Thompson paints a rather frightening picture of misguided attempts to alleviate suffering in the world. Most of us feel compelled to either initiate or join up with efforts to end global poverty, to feed the starving and educate the illiterate citizens of the global community. However, many programs designed to help often end up hurting. For example, feeding starving children in a country unable to support its population may lead to additional suffering when these children reach sexual maturity and then bear still more offspring. What Thompson does in this enlightening volume is point out the irony of causing suffering by trying to allieviate it. He goes on to say that, of course, we must feed starving people because it is our nature to do so, but why not allow foreign policy to look at the big picture. If a country cannot sustain its population, the population must be controlled; all the food in the world sent to a starving nation will do no good in the long run unless the reasons for the dire situation are addressed and remedied.

This book had a significant impact on me when I read it over 15 years ago. Its message has not dimmed through the years and, if anything, is even more timely now that India's population has topped 1 billion.

W.I.T. does it again!
Forget Joseph Campbell and his academic-minded ilk -- and take a journey on the wild side with W.I.T. There are very few others writing in the English language like W.I.T. who have all the necessary academic credentials (in his case teaching at MIT, etc.), plus all of the requisite real world credentials that come from creating Lindisfarne Assoc. from scratch. What this book does for the reader is creating a context and provide a place within which we can understand the truly mythic character of the human story, and thereby grasp the underlying evolutionary significance of our own moment in meta-history. Give this book the tie it deserves, because it can be a dense thicket. But passing through the thicket, even with the occasional thorn, is well owrth the price paid by an interested reader seeking larger truths about culture, language, history, and cosmos.

An excellent history lesson
I originally purchased this book after a general internet search on "Shreve". I have been working on Shreve genealogy for some time now. Israel is my 5th great-grand uncle. Being a relative of the Colonel, I had trouble putting the book down. The book gives an excellent view of the man's personality as well as a history lesson on the Revolutionary War. The book was also actually a suprise. Israel did not have the best of relationships with General Geroge Washington. There are several references to General Washington being somewhat frustrated by Isreal Shreve. These stories lead to very interesting reading which lead me to pursue further the relationship between Genreal Washington and Colonel Shreve. Numerous letters are also included between Colonel Shreve and his wife. These letters show how dedicated he was to his wife and also his new country. Other letters included are between Colonel Shreve and General Washington. Many of these exact letters can be read in original form at the national archives.

If your interested in the history of the Revolutionary War, this book gives an excellent view from a Colonel that was living day by day working to get home to his waiting wife and family.

Definitely worth you time.

Saw the Jim Thompson House in person, book is a reminder
Well, "book is a reminder." I guess that's the most that comes to mind about this book. Whether you should purchase this book depends on what you're looking for. I purchased it in preparation for a vacation to Thailand, because I was going to be shopping for Thai style household items and wanted to get informed. Plus, I'm a sucker for a decorating coffee table book that everyone else doesn't already have. I visited the Jim Thompson House while in Bangkok, and so that's why the only thing that now comes to my mind is: the book is a reminder of what I saw.

Tepid impression now, I suppose. The book gives some background on Jim Thompson and how he revived the Thai silk industry, as well as information about the rare antique Thai treasures that he collected in his home, which is now a museum. If you're really interested in this aspect, in particular, this book may be for you. If you're interested in Thai style, I'm not sure I would recommend this book as a starting point. There are other Thai style books that I reach for again and again, while this book sits on a shelf, untouched. It's a nice book, but more of an expensive souvenir.

Traditional Tales
In many Native American groups, animals are personified in traditional tales, often playing consistant roles which reflect that animal's characteristics. Coyote is most often seen as a trickster who makes a fool of himself so that child listeners may learn the lesson. This book contains an introduction and six coyote tales. The illustrations are black pen and the stories retain an authentic tone. The text is perfect for second graders and would be a great series of school skits, with dialog and narration already in the text. Although this simple book does not use colored illustrations or a rewritten literary text, it does a great job of focusing on the cultural integrity of the stories and delivering them to an audience of 4-8 year olds.

A New Room for William by Sally Grindley
This storybook is suitable for children ages 6-8; younger children will need to have it read to them. The book tells of William, who moves to a new house with his mother after his parents separate. While the book doesn't allude to the fact that William's parents no longer live together until near the end of the story, it is clear throughout that William is uneasy about the move to the new house and and other changes in his life. He feels nostalgia for the old house and at first is unwilling to make the effort to like his new home.

William's mother reassures him by involving him in decorating his new room. His growing eagerness to decorate his room with a dinosaur motif, as well as meeting a friend, helps him to begin to feel at home. When William realizes that his father will still be in his life and that he can decorate his bedroom at his dad's new home as well, he begins to feel comfortable with his new life.

The book should appeal to children who are experiencing changes in their own lives and espcially to children who like dinosaurs. It is well-written and nicely illlustrated in a brightly colored watercolor style.
