Useful information - but not usefully presented.
I have had such a great success with "Greek and Latin Roots in Everyday Language" published by the Perfection Form Company (not carried by Amazon) and I was looking for something more to supplement my teaching with. Although the information contained in "English Words - From Latin and Greek Elements" is of a high quality, and of the sort that my students would benefit from, the arrangement of the information was not. I have found that the typical student learns best when the directions are clearly and artistically arranaged. The teacher should only have to explain the self-explainitory, in order to help the students that don't understand the self-explainitory, and have the information presented in an enticing way. If there was a committee to revise this book I would love to be on it. I suggest the inventors, two or three practicing teachers, some students, and an artist or two.

Nice Book!!
I found what I have been looking for! A book who extends your English vocabulary systematically. I strongly recommend this book particularly for English learners. (I'm from Turkey)

With carefully chosen chapters and exercises, I'm sure you will learn a lot of things about Latin and Greek words in English. I memorized many difficult English words with the help of this book. I want to thank to the authors.

Very good book! I read it three times!

Excellent systematic vocabulary builder
As the reviser of this book--not the Photographer (there is not a single picture in the tome)--I must correct a few misimpressions given in the other reviews, while touting the systematic format that separates Dr. Ayers's book from its competitors. To be sure this is a textbook--the best selling text in this subject area--divided into two halves, one dealing with English words derived from Latin, the other dealing with English words derived from Greek. Each lesson has some introductory material; these intros vary: some explain how English builds words from Latin and Greek bases with an explanation of how dictionaries present such information, some are mini-lectures in linguistic processes that characterize English words, some deal with how the form and meaning of words change with time. Each lesson presents a list of bases, prefixes and suffixes for the student to memorize. These are set forth clearly in caps, and there are many examples given for each item. The lesson ends not with quizzes but with words derived from the elements presented in sentences that are written by skilled writers of English. All of the information is well indexed at the end. This systematic approach gives the student control over the most frequently encountered word elements in English coming from Greek and Latin. As a consequence of her studies, such a student will have stored in her brain the keys to about half of the harder words in English including the many thousands of technical words invented each year--especially those medical and biological tongue twisters invented by the biological and medical communities. With the keys in her head and the word in its context before her, the student will often undertand the author without having to look up words that often are not yet even in the most recent dictionary. This is power; but power is not easily gained in any field of endeavor. The book can be used by a diligent person for self-study, but most students will need a structured environment in which to learn its contents. TD Worthen

Rum and Razors (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Paper))

Ok
Not one of the better books in the MSW series. Almost none of the characters are likable except for the infamous J.B. Fletcher and even then with some of the nastiness directed towards her by other characters, the amount of patience she displays borders on the unbelivable. The descriptions of surroundings though are rich and make you almost feel like you're there! Not the best of the lot, but not too shabby either!

Great Book
Jessica is off to the beautiful US Virgin Islands to get away from a harsh Maine winter. She checks into her hotel owned by old friends called Lovers Lagoon, which is being run out of buisness by another hotel next door. One night when Jessica is walking on the beach she discovers the body of one of the owners. Jessica does some checking in to the murder, and finds out something shady has been going on at the hotel. This is one of my favorite Murder She Wrote books I've read. The plot though is very similar to the book Murder At The Powderhorn Ranch, that's why I gave it a 4 star

Murder at Lover Lagoon's Inn
This is the first book I read in the "Murder, She Wrote" series. Jessica Fletcher, the main character in the story is off to Lover Lagoon for a vacation. She knew the owners and were on good terms with them. It was one night when she was taking a walk at Lover Lagoon when she discovered the body of one of the owners,Walter Marschalk. She was determinded to find out the murderer. Walter's previous job was a famous travel writer and so Jessica accept the invitation of the owner of rival inn, Diamond Reef, to have dinner with a group of travel writers. She found out that Walter was not well-liked among his friends. As the story goes on, Jessica found a lot of suspects and discovered a lot of unexpected things. I find the story moveing on a bit too slow and the ending is also abrupt. But overall it is a nice book.

overweight, pedigreed home health guide
Following in the tradition of Yale's Cardiovascular Health Guide, the Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide, and the Johns Hopkins Medical Guide to Health After 50, the venerable Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons offers us this latest addition to the health-obsessed consumer craze for complete home medical references. As expected, this book offers only more of the same: a good name, a lot of pages, and a redundant course in layman's medicine. Given the sheer size and weight of the volume (lifting it is an exercise itself), you would expect the entries to have more detail and, well, more specialized terminology. The diagrams which accompany many of the chapters elicit more boredom than information (save for the psychiatric section's tables, which are rather good), and the overall organization of the book sacrifices content for accessibility. I've seen many home medical guides at the bookstore lately, and this one just doesn't stand out in particular. My honest recommendation is that you look past the University's illustrious name and opt instead for the MERCK MANUAL HOME EDITION (paperback version), which for its small size and affordable price is the best home medical guide for the entire family.

mayo clinic heart book
Very informative. I suffer from PVC's and try to get my hands on as much info as possible. I found this book to be very helpful in my understanding more on this condition.

Assessing Infants and Preschoolers with Special Needs
This text is a timely and insightful work. The authors give a good overview of the major assessment instruments used in Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education. Procedural guidelines, cultural validity and family concerns are also discussed. I found that the book is a great reference tool to go back to when questions arise! I would recommend this book to anyone working in the field of Special Education.

Code of Canon Law a Text and Commentary, Study Edition

The major American commentary on canon law.
This book first appeared as a hardback in 1985, just after the 1983 Code of Canon Law was released. The paperback "study edition", virtually identical to the hardback, came out later. In either form, this book is the standard American commentary on the revised code. It generally shows a high degree of scholarship and canonical insight. Written by a variety of commentators, however, the quality of writing is uneven, and some sections are open to criticism. One should not assume that opinions presented in this (or any other) commentary are official opinions, or even widely accepted. A substantially revised version is currently underway and can be expected around the end of 1998. Even so, this earlier version of the work will remain a valuable resource for practicing canon lawyers and others interested in Catholic Church law and practice. In particular, given that most of the commentary was actually written toward the end of the canonical reform period (which ran roughly from 1965-1983) the commentary herein tends to reflect accurately this period of uncertainity and speculation which affected all aspects of Church law following the Second Vatican Council. I use the book daily in my canonical practice and often recommended it to careful readers. The index is excellent. There is, alas, no Latin original text provided.

Make Up Your Own Mind
This book is written assuming the reader has already read Robert Louis Stevenson's _The Strange Case of Doctor Jeckyll and Mister Hyde,_ one of the classics of horror/science fiction. It's an interesting companion volume in which the author picks apart Stevenson's assertion that the two men, Jeckyll and Hyde, are the same individual. Every reader has to make up their own mind whether they buy the argument, but it's incontrovertable that Donald Thomas makes a good case.

The latest thoughts on Information Technology management
I picked up this book because it seemed to be the best current book about the state of the art of Information Technology management. It contains short easy to read articles on topics ranging from Supply Chain, Knowledge Management and eCommerce written by some IT gurus including many academics, Peter Drucker and some Anderson people.

It comes with bit of a European perspective. I have read that European companies get better return on their investment in IT and perhaps this book reflects this. It lacks the hype of most of the American IT management books. My only criticism is that the book is somewhat academic, lacks depth in parts and is very light on the technology side of things. Glancing at the index for "Java" or "Open Source" one notices it is missing these key new technologies.

For what I was looking for it was great - an overall picture of the state of IT management theory. It filled in some of my knowledge gaps and made good subway reading.

Comprehensive Reference about the planet Venus
Not a popularization, but a technical reference work. This is the second volume of the comprehensive reference about the planet Venus issued by the University of Arizona press. It's a bit more recent than volume 1, and thus includes results from the Russian Vega mission and the Magellan mission. Volume 1 gives a better introduction to the study of Venus, but this volume has much more recent (and hence better) data. If you want the real scientific details about Venus, this is where to get them.
