The fortunes of Faust

The Fortunes of Faust
The Fortunes of Faust is the third in a series of works on the evolution of the Faust tradition. As a librarian who is an avid reader and collector of Faustian lore and works written about this "historical character," I have found in Ms. Butler's work a most provocative and scholarly study. Her writing style is clear and studied. She takes the readers through the evolution of the Faust tradition and its roots in the practice of magic. Ms. Butler provides details that even this student of Faust found informative - whether it is her insights about the Spiess' Urfaustbook and the German Faust, thoughts on Martin Luther, the variety of hybrid and miscellaneous Fausts up through Goethe's Faust among others. The author views Marlowe's Fautus "the greatest of all the tragic versions the legend has inspired." The Fortunes of Faust is a compelling drama of the role of magic in history through the character of Faust. This is a fascinating read especially for anyone with an interest in the Faust legend

The German Element In The United States, With Special Reference To Its Political, Moral, Social, And Educational Influence. (2 Volumes) (BCL1 - U.S. History)

The German Element in the United States
A most thorough recounting of the German immigration movement to the United States from the early history of the country, its effect on the country's development, the spread of German population within, and contributions of Germans to America. This text was the principal text used by all major colleges and universities. Genealogists and historians would be most interested in the accounts of contributions made by specific German individuals with generally little-known details, such as the actual name of "Molly Pitcher" of the American Revolution and her German ancestry. Since it was long out-of-print, I would assume possibly because of World War II, this is an invaluable resourse for all libraries in their genealogy, history, German, or American sections.

Historical Times Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Civil War
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins Publishers (1986)
Author: Patricia L. Faust
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

Best General Civil War Reference
This is the best single-volume general reference work I have used on the American Civil War. It is comprehensive, accurate, balanced, readable, and well-illustrated. The articles are well-written and make for enjoyable browsing. I find it much more useful than Boatner's Civil War Dictionary (which is unbalanced in favor of Union topics and viewpoints).

James Henry Hammond and the Old South: A Design for Mastery
Published in Hardcover by Louisiana State University Press (2000)
Author: Drew Gilpin Faust
Amazon base price: $50.00
Average review score:

A good read about a not nice guy
Hammond is not a nice guy. He married for money, was not a great father, and campagined for elected office at time when no one else did and against the 'party' candidate to boot. Most interesting of all was his commitment to the Confederate cause but resistance to the call for material and manpower to help the cause. In the end, he could not believe it when his slaves were jubilant about the prospect of freedom. Through Hammond's eyes we see the south changed forever by the Civil War, not only due to the lost of their slaves but also by the unsouthern actions the Confederate government had to take and how they affected the southern way of life. Hammond is not a nice guy but this very readable book provides an excellent insight to the antebellum southern mind.

A Woman's Guide to the World of Psychiatry
A book that many of us wish was available a couple of decades ago. It informs women of their options in treatment without being condescending. It says that you are not alone if you have developed psychiatric problems and you are female. It gives you the courage to confront these problems without going into denial. A must have book for every therapist working with women.

Money and Magic: A Critique of the Modern Economy in the Light of Goethe's Faust

The alchemical process is alive and well
Towards the end of the middle ages, monarchs and kings came to the realization that the transmutation of elements may not be physically possible. The creation of wealth via alchemical means therefore shifted to another sphere. Rather than employ chemists laboring to create gold from lead, rulers instead hired economists to create gold from paper. The symbolism and metaphor of the alchemical process carried over from chemical to economic terms is really quite enlightening.

The relationship to the Faust legend and the role of Goethe in the development of the early modern economy makes this book a very interesting read for anyone who may be baffled by the current system of value creation in our modern economy.

The real insight of this book lies in its illumination of humankind's quest to gain mastery over time and our own mortality. Here the author demonstrates how science is used to gain predictive control over time by use of the past (the evidence of scientific method). Economics is used to master time via control over the future (money as "value" stored for future use). And the arts overcome the constraints of time by stretching out the present (the transporting nature of the sublime). The alchemical means by which this is accomplished is demonstrated clearly. Magic turns out to be very real indeed.
