a well-detailed book, comparing vhdl '93 vis-a-vis vhdl 87
This book descrives all the changes, additions and modifications made in vhdl language in 1993. Every change/addition has it's own chapter, in which the author explains the rationale behind the change/addition and illustrates them with a few examples. A good book for ppl. who want to know all the differences between vhdl '87 and vhdl '93. The title is a sort of misnomer, as latest version of vhdl was finally balloted in '93, and hence is called vhdl '93 and not vhdl '92 !!

Poetic, sympathetic, and True
I have been a fan of Basquiat for a long time. I am an artist as well. I have always been intrested in his life and have a lot of books on him and his art and his life. I found this book to be about a totally different perspective. Not only a womens persepctive but a women who was a muse to him. This book does not paint a glorified Picture of him...or a star struck tragic picture of him. It is about Susan and her plight with life, and him being a big part of it. The book is extremely poetic, very dark, sad, melancholy...but above all MOVING. I read it in less than 24 hours. I applaud Jennifer Clement

Hearts and Tracks
This book was a excellent book in the matter that it protrayed another perspective of Jean-Michel Basquiat and let us in on the life of one of his most enduring muses in his short and unfortunate addictive lifestyle and life. The books poetic writings give Jean-Michel and Suzannes life together a hard tragedy instead of a glamorous protrayal (tragedy is the actual matter of fact). Jean-Michel and Suzanne's relationship was truely bizarre and not understanding to the everyday person. People who know or know of Jean-Michel probably never knew the side of him that Suzanne saw, and it is refreshing and wonderful that we were allowed to read such intimate details of their life together. I titled this review "Hearts and Tracks" because the book is full of heart and the heroine abuse of Suzanne and Basquiat (including a discription of his unfortunate death).

no title
The book came in the maximum amount of time I expected - 2-14 business days from the notice I received from the seller that the item had been shipped. The quality of the item was high, much higher than expected for a used book. It looked brand new and I was very pleased with the item.

Eat Yourself Slim
I have been on a variety of different diets over the years, and the Montignac Method is the only one that allowed me to lose 21 pounds and still have lots of energy. In addition, since I bought the Montignac Recipes & Menus book, I have been able to keep my weight off now for five months with delicious meals. Eat Yourself Slim was a new way to eat. It's easy to understand and I recommend it to anyone who has been in the same boat as I have been, tired of the old diets that deprived me of the foods I love to eat. Those diets also didn't last. I usually gained all the weight back in a matter of weeks. Thank you Mr. Montignac !

Eat Yourself Slim : great results and so easy!
I encourage everyone tired of the fat-free freak, calories counting, food weighting, 'unit' counting non-sense diets that are so common in the US, to follow Michel Montignac's method.

Eat Yourself Slim is an simple method to lose weight while eating plenty and healthy. I was heavily overweight and easily lost 97 pounds in less than a year by following Michel Montignac's method and exercising regularly. My energy level is at an all-time high and I feel great and beautiful!!

The great thing about Michel Montignac's method is that I do not feel like I am dieting!! Very few foods are forbidden, I can eat pretty much what I want, as much as I want!! Of course, you have to be willing to give up junk food, and have a minimum of motivation. But as soon as you see the amazing results even after the first week, you won't want to go back to your old eating habits!

All US Diet Gurus are now copying Michel Montignac's 16 year-old method, and some of them even admit it! This is a great method, just go with the original!!

It really works!
I have read the Dutch version of this book, and been following the Montignac diet on and off for about 1 year. Using the Montignac diet, I lost about 15 pounds in about 4 months. Now, I usually follow Montignac during the week, and then eat what I want on the weekends, and I've remained at the same weight without really having to worry about what I eat. With the Montignac diet, you feel satisfied and never really over-full. I would definitely recommend this diet to anyone who's been yo-yo dieting. I did not believe that this diet would work, but IT REALLY DOES! And the recipes are actually really good. From Montignac, I've learned that not all meals have to be low fat to lose weight.

In the Peninsula With a French Hussar: Memoirs of the War of the French in Spain (Napoleonic Library)
Published in Hardcover by Greenhill Press (1991)
Author: Albert Jean Michel De Rocca
Amazon base price: $35.00
Used price: $19.95

Melancholy Soldier
De Rocca's memoir of the war in Spain is far less well-known than that of his hussar colleague Jean Marbot but makes for excellent reading (& probably far less given to exaggeration). Greenhill should be thanked for adding this short work to their Napoleonic Library - an affordable addition to any Peninsular collection. De Rocca's description of the insurgency leaves little to the imagination and certainly makes understandable the French failure to conquer the Spanish people. Any student of the Peninsula should pick this up as should those studying counterinsurgency. De Rocca later went on to wed the formidable Madame de Stael in a love match. We're lucky to have such a memoir by an intelligent, thoughtful campaigner. See also Memoirs of Colonel Bugeaud and the thoroughly readable Recollections of Colonel de Gonneville.

Fighting disciplined troops and civilian population in Spain
It is really rare to find books specially on the peninsular war and the war in Spain from the French side, the books that you find in English are almost always from the English side or Spanish.

This is a great book that you would really enjoy, we can find not only of a brave and compassionate man(not normal in some french hussards), but of an intelligent and objective observer of the military situation that the French Army find in Spain with the noncommon style of war made by Spanish Guerrilla .

We follow for two years a hussar officer in Napoleon's army, De Rocca was sent to Spain in 1808 from Germany where the French found a very different kind of war; here they were fighting not only the disciplined troops of the English under Sir John Moore, and the Spanish army, but also a civilian population desperately fighting to regain their freedom against Napoleon whose brother Joseph ruled Spain as a puppet king. De Rocca gives vivid accounts of military operations such as the march to Madrid and Napoleon's entry into the city and the subsequent battles in which he took part, the pursuit of Sir John Moore's army to Corunna, the battle at Talavera, which took place while he was away from Spain for a few months, and the battles that followed against the English under General Sir Arthur Wellesley, now in command in the Iberian peninsula. He also describes the enormous personal dangers he faced in every Spanish village that the French army entered, where every man, woman and child was intent on their death, yet he still pays tribute to the character of their enemies even when his own life was at risk from them.

You will enjoy this book.

Statistical Field Theory: Volume 1, From Brownian Motion to Renormalization and Lattice Gauge Theory
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (1991)
Authors: Claude Itzykson and Jean-Michel Drouffe
Amazon base price: $43.00
Average review score:

First rate presentation
This first volume of a two volume set serves a wide audience. The monograph will prove to be indispensible primary or secondary material for those whose interests cover quantum fields in minkowski space, quantum fields in euclidean space, constructive field theory --- particularly `triviality' related matters --- critical phenomena, dimensional regulated renormalization, the renormalization group, and lattice QCD. As a secondary source, the monograph is particularly well suited when coupled to texts such as J. Zinn -Justin's `QFT and critical Phenomena', Peskin and Scroeder's `Intro to QFT', or Itzykson's own `QFT'; by combining one of these texts with vol I of Statistical Field Theory students preparing for research will find themselves with more then enough material to begin their work.

But the real pleasure of this text is in its writing style and presentation. Here the text is a true jewel amongst lesser competitors. Many subtle points --- frequently obscured elsewhere in the literature --- are presented sharply in Statistical Field Theory. This is accomplished by a *thoroughly* readable prose, clear presentation of material's motivation, a concise and consitent manner for presenting points, and many examples and excercises that truly illuminate the reading.

Overall, this is a text that anyone with even a passing interest in quantum fields will be rewarded by.

first vol only
i think the first chapter is a b---- to get through, but after i did that i found the entire book either particularly useful or insightful. volume two never motivated it's own purchase.
I read it in frech, so i cant talk about how well things are explained in english, just in case anything was lost in translation, but with something like chapter two on grassman variables i dont think it's such a big deal. to put it succintly chapter 2 makes berezin's book obsolete to me and i feel that way about the whole book.

Life Doesn't Frighten Me at All
As an avid reader of Maya Angelou's works, I purchased this book as a gift for my 7 year old daughter, hoping to impart to her a fondness for my favorite author as well.

I must say, that beyond my expectations, I have helped to create a Maya fan. My daughter immediately took to the book, on Christmas Day, no less, amid hundreds of dollars worth of toys. We read the book about a dozen times in the first two days. She still reads it daily, and even took it to school to share with her class.

Maya's poem picks up on the fear and anxiety causing incidents of youth, and allows the child to tromp his/her fear into the ground. After reading it, my daughter felt fearless, realizing that she was the master of her emotion and was not at the mercy of 'scary things'.

I highly recommend this book, either for a child, or as a lover of art and poetry. Additionally, a tremendous collectible title for the future.

Life Doesn't Frighten Me
This is a wonderful book, both beautifully written and powerfully illustrated. I am a 3rd grade teacher, but I love this book mainly as a unique graduation gift for previous students of mine who are graduating from high school and remember me with graduation announcements. I love the combination of a gift that is both a primary book from their teacher, coupled with the larger message of the poem for the recipient who is soon embarking upon confronting life on his or her own! A very special and meaningful gift!

Excellent book
I thought this book was excellent. It's a great poem for inspiration, as it is a reminder that we all have courage. Maya repeats the line, "Life doesn't frighten me at all", getting her message across. This is a wonderful story for children, as well as adults.

The Roman Conquest of Italy (Ancient World (Oxford, England).)
Published in Paperback by Blackwell Publishers (1997)
Authors: Jean-Michel David and Antonia Nevill
Amazon base price: $26.95
Used price: $11.95
Average review score:

Were it longer, it couldn't punish more......
The Roman Conquest of Italy is a purely academic look at the social, economic, and political factors that led to the Romanization of the Italian peninsula. There is little of conquest here. Jean-Michel David scrupulously avoids anything remotely resembling conquest in his quest to beat the reader about the head and shoulders with the recitation of place names and peoples, legalisms and legislators, governmental structures and the aristocrats who maneuvered within them. Even the second Punic War is employed merely as a backdrop to discuss the displacement of peoples and the subsequent land confiscation of victorious Rome. Lest you think that an act of confiscation might lend some excitement, David makes sure to drown it in ennui with stupefying legalistic effect.

If there is a less intriguing side to any facet of Romanization, David finds it with unerring regularity. He seems to leap towards drudgery. Every single time I thought the book was about to pick up, David found a new professorial rat hole to climb down. Hellenism, the agent most responsible for melding the Italics into a whole, is discussed more as an aside than the powerful (and powerfully interesting) cultural force it had become. Additionally, the Social War and the civil wars which punctuated the manifestation of Roman empire are painstakingly avoided as well.

I, long ago, experienced the college history profs who, smugly announcing that they don't do wars, dove straight into the most mindnumbingly pedantic archival material known to man. These are the people who, though apparently devoted to representing history, do it its greatest disservice. They literally suck the fun out of it. One of their kind wrote this book.

A very detailed story of Italy and how it became unified.
This book is only 218 pages long yet holds a lot of information. Starting around the fourth century BC, in Italy, the author describes the people of Italy, their backgrounds, governments (or lack of) and orgins. Then Rome steps onto the stage in the next act and we learn how it incorporated the other cities into their state, with or without the use of force. Hannibal and the consequences of the second Punic War are next, followed by chapters on the Italian economy, municipal politics, patronage and Romanization, Roman domination and citizenship, and in the final act the book deals with the Roman instruments of power; money, clients and prestige.

Excellent book, misleading title
This book is a superb description of the factors that during the last two centuries BC lead Italy from being a collection of states under Rome domination to a sigle political entity. The prospective buyer must be aware that the translation of the title is misleading. This NOT a history of the conquest of Italy by Rome but a history of how after being conquested by Rome Italy became "Romanized".

OUTFITTED PLAYERS
Pzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...slang for "hey girl, how can I get wit chu? "
(Out fitted players on the cover)
Basquiat's pallette is overwelming. This book has many previously unpubllished works by the late artist. Most of the drawings are exceptional...The paintings on the other hand are mostly unresolved. It would have been nice if the images were in FOCUS! But the over all production is good. Leaves me wondering when the rest of his unpublished drawings will see light of day.

Some poor reproductions.
Some of the drawings are disappointingly un-sharp reproductions and/or are too small. Basquiat's drawings are extremely delicate and detailed and more beautiful than his paintings. They must be reproduced with high quality sharpness and at a proper size to be fully enjoyed and appreciated.

Royalty, Heroism, and the Streets
This book (the one with "PZ" on the cover, since Amazon has decided to not seperate certain reviews to certain books...) is another great treat for any basquiat fan. It has some very intelligent writings by Keith Haring, Francesco Clemente and others. Also, it contains some informative interviews with the late artist that contain some of his famous quotes. One thing that is most exciting about this book is that it shows almost all of the Basquiat/Warhol and Basquiat/Warhol/Clemente collaborations! Also, the photographs and art reproductions are amazingly done. If you love Basquiat, or even mildly admire him (or Haring, Clemente, or Warhol for that matter) you NEED this book. Matt

If there are any other Basquiat fans out there looking for someone to talk to about art like I am, then please e-mail me.

Bayesian Inference in Dynamic Econometric Models (Advanced Texts in Econometrics)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (2000)
Authors: Luc Bauwens, Michel Lubrano, Jean-Francois Richard, and Michele Lubrano
Amazon base price: $45.00
Average review score:

advanced text, good coverage, unique Bayesian perspective
This is a modern advanced text on econometrics emphasizing dynamic models including the ARCH/GARCH models that have practical application in finance. What makes it a little different than most texts is the Bayesian approach. The authors include coverage of MCMC methods which make the Bayesian approach more realistic. This book provides a very modern treatment of econometrics

Excellent introduction to Bayesian Time Series Econometrics
This is an outstanding introduction to the application of Bayesian statistics to the problems encountered in macroeconomics and finance. Bayesian inference it's becoming a critical tool for researchers and practitioners with an interest in empirical ecnomics and to date this is the first book on Bayesian time series econometrics. The sections on nonlinearities and on numerical integration are especially valuable. Having the book it is a must for researchers and professionals interested in modeling and forecasting the state of economy and financial markets.
