Jacques le Fataliste

An entertaining insight into 18th C philosophical issues
Actually a very modern book, despite being a few hundred years old. Diderot's method of narration keep you on your toes, and you learn to expect the unexpected. The author challenges the 'rules' of narration, and even reserves the right to rewind and change his mind! All of which is very relevant in book about fatalism, the belief that everything that happens to us is pre-ordained, or as Jacques says, written in the great scroll in the sky. And indeed, for characters in a novel like Jacques and his master, the events that befall them are indeed pre-ordained and written in the 'great scroll' that is the novel... no matter how hard the narrator tries to give an illusion of freewill..! A very easy going read, by the master of French 18th Century literature. If you enjoy it you should also try the Voyage de Bougainville and Lettres sur les Aveugles.

Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet (Famous Explorers)

Short and concise and very attractive
This thin book (20 pages, not including the table of contents, index, etc.) is a wonderful introduction to the lives of Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet, famous explorers of the upper Mississippi River. It is part of the Famous Explorers series, and is a very attractive book. The pages include many colorful illustrations, and the pages are decorated, so that the book looks like a book from long ago.

Due to its length, the book is not in-depth on the men or their journey, but it does cover all of the essentials in a clear and concise manner. The book, is highly attractive, which will help it appeal to the younger reader, and it is informative in a short and easy-to-read manner, which will appeal to readers of any age. I highly recommend this book!

James Tissot
The paintings of James Tissot both reveal and pose questions concerning his subjects. Many works have seemingly deliberate contradictions. I found myself engrossed in each scene. This particular book is a beautiful collection of his most recognizable pieces.

Jesus and Marx: From Gospel to Ideology

Great book about two very interesting men
Jacques Ellul has written an outstanding book in, Jesus and Marx. Ellul, a French sociologist and christian, is one of those special authors you don't easily forget. In this book, Ellul is extremely technical and freely uses sociological jargon which can be difficult to understand. Over and over, the author makes profound statements concerning the paradigms and worldviews of Marxism and Christianity. Ellul is quick to point out that both of these worldviews have trouble mixing. In a general way, many of the ideas of Karl Marx were not so dissimilar from those of Jesus. After reading this book, I don't think the author would disagree with this statement. However, Ellul makes the reader understand that many of the good-natured ideas of Marxism stem from a completely different way of thinking than that of Christianity. One example of this, is what Ellul calls horizontal theology and vertical theology. You'll have to read the book to find out more about these issues. It would not be fair of me to describe these ideas in a short book review. This is a five-star book. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the ideas of Marx and Jesus. This is worthwhile reading you'll be sure to give much thougth to.

A Pilgrimage through Photographs.
It is a magnificent work of photojournalism that takes one through the various places and events in the life of Jesus by way of pictures and text. Starting from the annunciation of the angel to Mary at Nazareth till the ascension of Jesus on the Mount of Olives, the most important places of interest for a pilgrim are well portrayed through seventy full color photographs and the significance of the places today and at the time of Jesus explained by way of the accompanying text. It is designed to be a good pilgrimage without the scrimmage of the actual travel. There are various sites in Holy Land worthy of the attention of a tourist, but this book chooses to focus simply on the places of interest from the point of view of Jesus life and ministry. ...

The author Jacques Potin is a French monk and journalist who has led many groups of pilgrims through the Holy Land and has brought forth a guide for the same purpose. The original French text is translated by Colette Joly Dees who has done a very good job of rendering the English text in the everyday language of the North American people. Whoever has been on a pilgrimage of the Holy Land or wishes to do so, following the footsteps of the Lord, would treasure this lovely book.

A superb book about childhood
Jacques Ferron is surely the best fiction writer in Quebec literature. This novel is a bright view of the lost of chilhood. I happened to edit the last edition in French and after 5 or 6 readings I am still discovering the sumptuous prose of a master short story teller. Betty Bednaski, the translator, did a marvelous job. I am delighted to find on your list a few titles of the «admirable docteur Ferron». Pierre Cantin Pardon my English..

La subversion du Christianisme
Ce livre de Jacques Ellul met en lumière, et de manière remarquable, le paradoxe suivant, que le christianisme est souvent devenu ce qu'il combattait. Le chapitre sur l'islam, entre autres, est très intéressant.

Excellent how to manual for the non phobic
This is a fabulous how-to for those who are somewhat handy with kitchen tools, though by no means does it require those with experience. The photographs and instructions are clear and explicit, and the book is written in an easy to read and non pretentious style. The recipes for pastry's and cakes are easy to follow, and WORK. I first came across this book when working as a bakers assistant at a patisserie, and found that it explained and showed me everything I needed to know for taking home what we were d
