Great Book for Scorsese Fans & Students
Examines Director Martin Scorsese's career from the beginning to Cape Fear (although it seems that the book had to go to press before Cape Fear was actually released, as there's a discernable lack of substance in that chapter).

To gather wonderful tales of how Scorsese works, Kelly interviews the director's friends, family members, casts, and crews. Oh, and the Secretary to the President of Cyprus!! (See details about The Last Temptation of Christ). Quoted stories, observations, and comments all contribute to a fine portrait of one of our greatest active cinema artists. (And, to the delight of film buffs everywhere, text shows that Scorsese is first and foremost an unabashed movie fan)! Kelly's system provides the reader to form own opinions about Scorsese, rather than making a lot of critical conclusions.

In pursuit of my undergrad degree, I used this book quite a bit for research toward essays I wrote about Scorsese's films. Not at all a chore to read, it was a very enjoyable book, great for the fan as well as the film scholar.

Good index, good filmography. Brief forewards by Michael Powell and Steven Spielberg hint at more than a bit of pure jealousy!

fantastic bio!
this is one of the best, in-depth bio's that I have read. And what a subject! Martin Scorsese is a god-like director that has made such films as Good Fellas Casino and Taxi Driver. The book is filled with interveiws from fellow directors and drew/cast etc. Great format! It's like reading a behind the scene's documentry.

BUy it!

Wouldn't think of using another book!
An encyclopedic guide to Excel 2000, this book is the only guide I would consider using for the new version of Excel.

Great for intermediate or "power" Excel user
I got a chance to see an early review copy of the book and have to say it's great. It is especially comprehensive in the areas or data analysis, including Excel PivotTables that use SQL Server 7.0 OLAP features, as well as programming Excel with simple macros. If you're a power user that's looking for a deeper understanding of Excel, plus some stuff that's hard to find anywhere else, this book's for you.

Classic essays on the nature of drama
These collected essays, first published in such periodicals as The New York Times, The New York Herald Tribune, or Atlantic Monthly, trace the origins of modern drama in Greek tragedy and comedy. At least four of them should be required reading in any introductory course in British and American literature: The Salesman Has A Birthday; Tragedy And The Common Man; The Nature Of Tragedy; and The Family In Modern Drama. The last of these contains a memorable phrase that furnished the title of the selection of the late U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl's essays, At Home In The World. One brief quotation from Tragedy And The Common Man that seems especially relevant to the present era will suffice: "The Greeks could probe the very heavenly origin of their ways and return to confirm the rightness of laws."

Wonderful compilation of Miller's thoughts
This book is an incredible trip through out Miller's ideas. The essays on the book are very well selected and disposed in a good way for the readers to understand what Arthur Miller is all about. There's no better way to know somebody other than this persons' own words. And this is what's so special about this book. We get to know Arthur Miller through his own special words. The first essay, "Tragedy and the Common Man" is already classical for its contents. Most of the books about Arthur Miller talk about it, but this very book happens to be the only way for us to actually read the whole text. Summing up: if you're willing to go to the bootom of this very important writer, this is the book you must choose.

The best book about Applesoft BASIC.
I read the Second Edition of the Apple II Users' Guide. This edition covers Applesoft BASIC programming and can be read easily by novices, yet is informative enough for experts. It is exhaustive; the reference guide in the back gives precise definitions of each Applesoft command. Indeed, this book is better than the official Apple documentation.

One warning: this book was published before or nearly at the same time as when ProDOS came out, and covers only Apple DOS 3.3. (Some editions may cover ProDOS, but not the one that I read.)

Essential - but always be sure to get the latest edition.
I don't know if or when any of you is going to find himself / herself in this particular area, but anyway here it is...

This is the latest edition (8th) that was released only about a year ago. Things really changed in this edition compared to its predecessor; more authors are involved and new and updated information is added (though many sections remain).

Important note: When it comes to Myanmar, things can change for better or worse overnight due to the nature of the ruling government, while some other things tend to stay the same. Especially here, pay close attention to all the small details given in the chapters "Facts for the visitor", "Getting there and away" and "Getting around" - they matter greatly.

=============================================================

As a whole, the guide will be a valuable asset for you if you're planning on traveling there, and there is absolutely no doubt whether to buy it or not - it's an essential purchase. To a great extent it will help you plan your budget, your destinations, how to get there and when, what to bring and so forth.

You should know that there are some beautiful places to visit in the country. One of them, the Shwedagon Paya in Yangon, strikes me as one of the most beautiful man made structures in the world. Imagine a 100 meters high Stupa (Buddhist religious monument), all covered with golden leaves, set on top of a hill, in the center of smaller golden temples and Buddha statues. The sight was breathtaking and alone was worth coming. Another famous place, yet less astounding, is Bagan, the city of Stupas in the north. There you can find numerous Stupas some of which were built more than 1000 ago. And yes, almost in every city and town you will see at least one golden Stupa (that immensely contradict the poverty of the people) that give Myanmar the name "The Golden Land".

The tagline on the cover of this book is "should you go?" It is misleading due to the fact that the answer they give inside is "yes". If you want to go - go, the political status is not of your concern, you're a traveler not a world freedom fighter. You wouldn't help the local people by avoiding the country - they benefit from your staying there - and that is all that you should care about.

Nevertheless, the authors don't really prepare you for the level of poverty you're going to meet there (the same way another author hasn't done in the Cambodia book yet); this is one of the poorest countries in the world and that's why you should always be careful and never trust anybody - they're there for your money (mostly). I really don't like, after being around, the attitude of "the locals are so nice and we can learn so much from them"; some of them are really nice and helpful, but others are nice because you spend your money there and it's downright blatant. Expect it; don't fall for it and BE CAREFUL of forced and immediate friendliness. Remember that as a tourist you're regarded as very rich and compared to them you are.

I want to mention the fact that as a traveler and a guest you will receive the best services even in budget hotels - they treated my friend and me like royalty in each and every hotel, and that was something we really enjoyed and appreciated. It's the best service all over South East Asia, and it does say something about the people as a nation.

I hope their days of freedom will come soon. ...

A Must For Aviation Buffs
As one of the 12 original pilots that ferried the first P4M-1Q aircraft to the Pacific in 1951 (and for two years flew operational missions in the Mercator) I can without hesitation recommend this book to anyone interested in historical aircraft. It is the most complete and accurate account of the P4M-1 and P4M-1Q I have found to date. The 108 pages include many color photos and technical illustrations about the plane. The use of the P4M-1/1Q by the three units that operated it is given a good, although from my viewpoint, short, summary with a number of incidents that the plane was involved in. The book has photos of my aircraft, 121451, and others that I flew.

Olive Production Manual (#3353)

A comprehensive manual on olive growing
Louise Ferguson and her colleagues present a unique set of topics on the olive (Olea europaea), its growth and development and downstream processing of the olive fruit for eating and olive oil production. Topics include varieties, nutrition, planning olive groves, water requirements, pruning and training as well as propogating methods and pest management. This text, an international standard for olive production, has been developed from the research activities of the University of California (Davis) USA. The text is well written and illustrated with diagrams, graphs and coloured photographs. The latter dealing with problems that can be experienced in olive growing. A modern commercial olive grove can be established and managed with the information presented. This text is a must for all those dealing with olives especially horticultralists, growers and horticultural students.

Great ideas for the do-it-yourselfer.
I was very pleased at all the ideas and step by step instructions in this book. I wanted to build a cover for my patio and bought this just based on the front cover (had a picture of the type of cover I'm looking for). With great suggestions on what MY patio might need, I'm going forward with my plans! Before this I had no idea where to start. Now I have a good amount of information to make me feel comfortable with drawing up the plans, figuring out my materials list, and starting the project. The photos in here offer some great ideas and really get the creative juices flowing.

It changed my relationships and my life for the better.
My partner and I weren't getting along. We were fighting all the time and were talking about separating until we read the book. We both realized that we needed to change our attitudes and how we communicated. "Talk to Me" showed us how to do that. We are so much happier now. Their suggestions are great. It was really easy to read and follow their guidelines. I wish I'd had this book a long time ago. I recommend it highly to anyone who wants to have positive loving relationships.
