George Orwell: A Political Life (Lives of the Left)
Published in Paperback by Manchester Univ Pr (1900)
Author: Stephen Ingle

Average review score:

Certainly over estimates Orwell as a genuine leftist
Ingle's book is valuable for its insight into how Orwell was wont to exaggerate his hardships early in life as well as his attempts to record it as it *felt*. As a feminist I of course deplore Orwell's lack of sensitivity to Women and their struggles for suffrage, for political rights, and the right to own their own bodies. Nowhere does Orwell make clear that he is fighting for the rights of women, and this cannot be forgotten. We must also note that he continues to enjoy popularity among conservatives, a fact lost upon no self-respecting radical. I suppose that while the rest of us are challenging the assumptions of the colonialist mindset, white male writers of the past such as Orwell (who once slapped 'coolies' when losing his temper) are no longer useful in our examiniation of imperialist paradigms. For a contemporary perspective of the incredible variety and richness of post-colonial discourse, we need to turn to more radical and transgressive writers, such as Mary Daly, bell hooks, Ishmael Reed, and others. Orwell continues to accumulate dust and conservative praise, though we should continue to mine his works for their telling inconsistencies.

A truly vibrant, truly multicultural children's book.
A lively engaging book that captures the essence of the multicultural ideal. Readers are introduced to contemporary artists with many diverse cultural backgrounds through short autobiographical sketches, photographs, and self portraits. An explanation of the self portrait is also included in the sketch. This is a great way for kids (or adults for that matter) to learn about art and multiculturism at the same time!

Merrily We Roll Along
Published in Hardcover by Dodd Mead (1984)
Authors: Stephen Sondheim and George Furth
Amazon base price: $15.95
Average review score:

One of the best plays in years, truly a masterpiece
Furth and Sondheim have done it again! This play combines the delightfulness of youth and dreams and the harshness of reality. It runs backwards to keep your spirits high at the end. Also, to show that the path you choose isn't always the one that leaves you with everything you imagined. Sondheim beautifully captures the true emotions present throughout this show. He does not create a false emotion, but brings each piece to an aesthetic that surges with a true felt emotion. Truly, this play will leave you laughing, crying, and breathless.
