Heine has been sadly neglected over the years in favor of more "modern" poets Holderlin and Rilke, even though in many ways Heine is as modern as either. He may be the greatest German prose stylist (as Nietszche thought), and his poetry though very lyrical is never banal or lacking in profundity. This edition in Continuum's German series is excellent, with a sampling of Heine's broad poetic output - with, of course, some omissions, most notably 'Songs of Creation' and 'Morphine.' Also included are Heine's unique satires of travelogue, 'The Harz Journey' and 'Ideas - Book Le Grand,' which consist of poetic interludes, many comic episodes, but also some truly beautiful passages concerning the nature of human existence. Finally, one of Heine's most masterful poems, the epic 'Germany: A Winter's Tale', is also included, rounding out this well-selected anthology of one of the essential German - and world - writers.

Heinrich Heine is one of the most lovable writers in European literature. A German of Jewish origin who lived from 1797 to 1856, he regarded himself as the last romantic writer. That shows in his poetry: Very often they begin like usual romantic poems, describing a woman watching the sunset by the seaside for example; but then Heine comes up with a bitterly ironic twist, telling the said lady not to worry as there is nothing unusual about the sunset, the sun always disappears over there and comes back from the other side... Heine is passionately in love with romanticism, Germany and Judaism, but that doesn't keep him from seeing the objects of his love as they really are, he manages to be enchanted by illusion and disillusioned at the same time. That's what makes him such fun to read. His work is somewhat uneven (so it's best to start with a selection like this one), but I always felt that he is the kind of person I would love to be my friend. Heine is never boring. - Apart from that he is second only to Goethe among the best of German poets.

I liked this book. I am a physical mathematician with interest
in dluid dynamics. I bought this book to learn about
laser-fluid interaction.

The discussions are illuminating with simple mathematics.
The author certainly knows the crucial matters and concentrates
on them. I liked very much the derivation of the Lorenz force,
as well as, the in depth discussion of the Kelvin force
and its relation to the Lorenz force.

The book is not exactly an introduction since it requires
some background in fluid and electric physics. It is also a bit
selective; more complete coverage can be found in a book by the
same author published in 1991 by Springer. This book heavily
references the 91 book. I think you need to have both to make the most out of them.

There are a couple of comments: I do not agree with a kind of tendency to put papers in textbooks. I think this is the purpose
of a text: to make a complete coverage of the literature. I liked
very much the proposal for ignition volume over the indirect drive used at NIF, but why the author did not take the time to write a nice chapter with more explanations and more bachground on this topic instead of providing one of his papers?

Overall a usefull book, which must be complemented by a more
extensive coverage like the authors 91 book.

This exciting and highly personal book provides an excellent account of laser-matter interactions from the perspective of one of the pioneers in the field of laser-produced plasmas and laser fusion. It simultaneously develops the broader issues in electromagnetic theory whilst also highlighting the dangers of oversimplifying physical models. The methods of electrodynamics and two-fluid hydrodynamics are used to discuss the importance of non-linear physics. Recent status and topics in plasma physics research are discussed from the perspective of Professor Hora's long and successful involvement in the field. The fundamental nature of laser interactions and their applications are illustrated with numerous examples, including the prospect of power stations providing energy at 1/3 to 1/5 of the present day cost of power generation. Also emphasized is the creation of unexpected new phenomena that result from the non-linearity in laser matter interactions induced by intense laser pulses. Here Professor Hora provides a first hand introduction to his controversial "Principle of Non-Linearity", putting strong arguments that Non-Linearity holds the key to the development of whole new areas in physics and indeed promises to revitalize the whole discipline of Physics. This book will appeal to readers who are interested in laser-plasma physics and who enjoy the human face of research and the assessment new ideas.

This book, a required reading in school, had me doubtful at first, but upon reading further, I realized that this is truly one of the best books I have ever read, and one of the best World War II pieces I have read. An epic tale of corruption, human emotion, and the true meaning of friendship; this book is a masterpiece from all aspects.

Boll is the best writer to come out of the ruins of World War 2. In this short story he approaches the human side of war and contrasts it with the ruthless mudering lunancy that invades an SS officer's mind. This is haunting and delicate.

Well I had to rate it something, or Amazon's software wouldn't accept the note . . . I guess five stars will have to do.

of von Manstein and von paulus than people
are used to. Written by someone who was
in the pocket of stalingrad, it offers
a first person view of the battle. For fans
of von manstein, the book offers a critical
and i thought a fresh view of the man, who is
held in high regard by most historians but not
so high by this officer in the sixth army.I found
book to be fast read. You'll enjoy it

Written from the perspective of an Intelligence Staff Officer, this book offers an outstanding blend of the perspective from the top as well as a more junior officer. Specific sections on von Manstein, von Seydlitz, and Paulus are also quite insightful. No matter what other fine books you have on Stalingrad, i.e. Beevor, definitely add this one to your collection.

The thermodynamics of insects, from flight and thermoregulation to "thermal wars" between predator and prey. This is fascinating hard science presented in a user-friendly format. Short and pithy.

Bernd Heinrich has brought us yet another book that appeals both to the complete layperson and the scientist and provides enough detail and entertainment to keep both happy. The Thermal Warriors provides a fascinating look into the details of insect thermodynamics. Did you know that bees and most other flying insects have to shiver their muscles to warm-up their engines before flying because their flight muscles are adapted to work best at flight temperatures? Did you know that some butterflies have to stop and rest frequently on even moderately sunny days to keep from overheating?

Heinrich has taken his in-depth experience in this field and created a summary version for those that want to know more, but don't have any interest in wading through a 600 page monolith. The book is split up into different "problems" that insects must overcome to achieve flight, be active in different environments, and utilize different body shapes and sizes. He explains the physics of the various problems encountered and adaptations to overcome the problems in an easy to read manner. He frequently uses car engine analogies to help things make more sense.

My only qualm with this book is that it was over too soon!

I read a friend's grease smudged copy a few years back and decided this was one of the greatest bike books ever written. I have been trying to find my very own copy ever since. Thank you for re-releasing it.

The book is hilarious! It really does enable you and a group of friends to play the game without a cumbersome computer. Dis or Dats, Gibberish Questions, and Jack Attacks are all here. It also contains some of the best questions from the Television volume compressed into short, quick games.

All in all, a great party game or temporary roof shingle depending on your needs at the time.

Father Dumoulin's magisterial two volume history of Zen Buddhism is the standard English work on the subject and come highly recommended for any student of Zen of Eastern religions who wants a scholarly overview of the subject. My only caveat would be that this is NOT a history of Zen thought in the sense of a detailed analysis of the various philosophical doctrines of the various schools of Zen. Such a work would be much, much larger than this one. It does, of course, deal with these issues, but only in a very basic way, as one would expect from a general history. In short, it is the best general history of Zen available.

It's a real shame that this book is out of print. This is one of the great, classic studies of the history of the development of Zen. Volume 1 (this one) covers the antecedents of Zen in India to its development in China. Volume 2 covers Zen in Japan. I've only read volume 1, but I learned a lot about both the history of Zen and also its philosophy. Dumoulin is one of the great scholars of the history of Zen, and although he is not always philosophically acute, you will get some genuine insights into Zen doctrine by reading this. (Of course, according to Zen, the doctrine isn't really what's important!)

Many patterns in nature are often overlooked. Haeckel captures the natural beauty of living creatures, presenting them in such a way as to spotlight their delicate forms. This black and white rendition of Haeckel's artwork is very impressive, adding a quality perhaps more pleasing to the modern eye than the color originals. Although no written text accompanies the plates, one still understands what the artist is conveying. Haeckel's grouping of the organisms in a very detailed, scientific manner is at the same time aesthetically pleasing to both scientists and nonscientists.
