History of American Classical Music: Macdowell Through Minimalism
Published in Paperback by DIANE Publishing Co (1995)
Authors: John Warthen Strubley and Philip Glass
Amazon base price: $19.00

Informative
Excellent book- full of information and very readable, without being too tecnical or pedantic. I might fault the author for being a bit sparse on 19th C. American composers, but this is a matter of personal judgement and the need to keep the book within manageable length. Also in 1998 fewer works by composers such as Fry, Bristow, Lambert and John Knowles Paine were available for listening.

How global is advertising?
A very interesting book, written by many authors that have lots of experience in different fields/countries. It all comes down to the questions "how global or local shall we advertise?", "what are the success factors for global advertising?" and "how global are our consumers?". There is no black and white, but the book gives tons of examples, hints and suggestions about the different levels of grey, how they can lead to success or failure. Overall I can recommend the book, although it will not give you the simple answer you are looking for, simply because there is no simple answer.

Great Biography
This is an excellent book about the life and times of Sousa. Short-Sweet-To the Point. It has great historical pictures of Sousa along with some cartoon drawings that enhance the story. I will be putting mine in my school's library for the student's to use on their biography project. A great book for an early reader 3rd grade and up.

Great help for my school project.
This book was easy to read with good pictures. Very understandable. I was able to find this book in my school library (it was the only one!). I would recommend this book to kids my age that need it (I am 11 years old).

Larkin essays on jazz are insightful
For many years, Philip Larkin wrote reviews and essays on Jazz. He fell in love with the music as a young man. This love might seem odd, because Jazz is a distinctly American form of music (and Larkin almost never travelled abroad and never to America) and it is also dominated by African-Americans (Larkin has unkind things to say about minorities in his Collected Letters). Nevertheless, Larkin found in the music of Armstrong, Ellington, Basie, and others a joy that was missing from much of the rest of his life. One warning for serious Jazz fans -- for Larkin, the downfall of Jazz began with Charlie Parker. He had no interest in Parker, Mingus, Miles Davis, or almost anyone who recorded after the later 40's. In fact, he lumped Charlie Parker with Ezra Pound and Pablo Picasso as person with reputations as great artists, but whom he felt had a terrible effect on their art. In some ways, this book tells you as much about Larkin as Jazz. Nevertheless, the enthusiasm he had for Jazz, and his skill as an essayist make this an enjoyable book.

The March King
It was a very good book. I do think that Mr. Sousa waas a better march writer than book writer though.

Memoirs of a Bengal Civilian: Lively Narrative of a Victorian District Officer
Published in Paperback by Buccaneer Books Inc (1991)
Authors: Philip Mason and John Beames
Amazon base price: $14.95

A wonderful account of British India after the Mutiny
John Beames was not a major historical figure, but this book should appeal to anybody who has an interest in British India. Beames describes his early life as the son of a minister in England and his college days at Haileybury, as part of the last generation of young men to pass through the East India Company's private college. The majority of the book is taken up with his career in the Indian Civil Service between 1858 and 1893. Beames is notable for his clean command of the english language - which was considered exceptional for the times he was writing in - hardly a phrase of purple prose in sight. He was also notable because he was considered to be an ordinary man, one of the civil servants who did their duty very well and to the best of their ability, contributed to history, but yet are not remember as many of the Viceroys India who had far shorter careers, often far less distinguished.

One of the historical gems in the book is Beames' description of Calcutta. For him it was womderful city of palaces and parks, of high society, young woman keen on romance, and young men with too much leisure on their hands. These descriptions present such a contrast to the images of Calcutta today.

In his descriptions of Indians and Anglo-Idnains Beames is perhaps a perfect man of his times in that he often displays the usual prejudices of the British in India. At the same time, however, he was not overtly racist and would acknowledge that individuals should be judged as individuals. In this respect some of the most entretaining passges are reserved for those of his english colleagues in Indian who he considered to be incompetent fools despite their often high standing in that society.

A wonderful book for anybody who wants an insight into those times.

Mystical Healing: The Psychological and Spiritual Power of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises

An invitation to be with Jesus that can't be turned down.
I was not familiar with all of the vocabulary but my heart was familiar with the stirred longing to experience the Presence of the Lord that came as I read. The changed lives of people from varied backgrounds who have been drawn by Love to these healing exercises were shared in a candid and moving interchange with the author. Theory and practice of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises required more than one reading. I participated in short Ignatian retreats loving the use of Scripture to guide me to His Healing Presence. After reading Father John's "Mystical Healing" I scheduled the 30 residential retreat. If you love the Lord, this is a book and an experience you cannot ignor. The hope of change and the promise of a strengthened and renewed relationship with God are a cry of the soul that can be met here regardless of your denominational affiliation. This book may have been intended for the priest, minister, spiritual director, the college educated. However, those of us who sometimes need a dictionary to read but hunger for more of God will find this worth the effort. Knowing we can experience the Love and Healing power of Jesus is the gift Father John presents to us.

The Oracles of the Law
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Publishing Group (07 August, 1978)
Author: John Philip Dawson
Amazon base price: $85.00
Average review score:

A thick read, but worth it.
This book seeks to compare the history of legal evolution in England, France, and Germany. Dawson is particularly interested in the presence (or absence) of 'case-law', a body of law springing from actual judicial decisions. The good news about this book is that it covers all the details. If you're curious about how legal institutions have operated in times past, if it interests you, for example, that the venerable doctrine of precedent in English law is a nineteenth-century creation, or that German courts once referred hard cases to law faculties, this book is for you. The bad news about this book is that it covers all the details. The book is several hundred pages long, and Dawson's exhaustive (and exhausting) discussions of such things as the mechanics of case reporting are not for the mildly interested or the easily drowsy. Still, anyone who is curious about legal history could do worse than to read this book.
